Thirteen slot-heads showed up to race Late Model NASCAR and Flexi on Monday evening on the last day of January, 2022. The group included eight locals, four from Cottage Grove and one from Grants Pass.
For the past few months, drooling slot-heads from Cottage Grove have been making the trek to Roseburg’s Spare Time Raceway. This trend will likely continue because Cottage Grove’s only private track has turned its back on Hard body racing in favor of Flexi racing. It is true that STR mixes a few Flexi races into its program, however, the majority of classes feature plastic or resin model bodied cars with either production or scratch-built chassis.
In anticipation of the NASCAR/Flexi race, the STR track was cleaned and sprayed. Conditions were quite good for both classes. Competition was fierce but there was, as always, an air of camaraderie within the group.
Late Model NASCAR
Bob ran 91.1 laps to finish first in the Late Model NASCAR race (quite good considering his personal best is 91.6 laps). Mark finished second using his wide NASCAR chassis with 89.4 laps (a personal best). Joe finished third, about a lap behind Mark.

Handicap Finish
Greg was the big winner in the handicap race, running about 10 laps better than his handicap would indicate. Lowell was second and Mark H third both posting about 5 laps better than their handicap would indicate.
Flexi
Although Joe had the quickest ride turning the fastest laps of about 4.55 seconds in each lane, he suffered from low consistency. This may have been due to a guide tongue that bent slightly downward. That problem was addressed prior to the final heat. The fix seemed to make the car more stable; however, it was too late. By that time Bob was out of reach. Bob was the winner turning 96.3, a personal best. Joe was second with 93.2 laps and Rich was third with 90.8 laps.
Mark was in the hunt in the first heat; however, performance in subsequent heats deteriorated as his motor lost considerable power, otherwise he would have challenged for a podium place.
Watch for Dustin in the next Flexi race. A bit more consistency and he will be in the hunt for a podium finish. As it was, he was only about a lap and a half behind third place Rich.
