I have this question on my worklist of "to-do" for my new house. Slot car people are the smartest so I'll ask it here:

Do I need a termite contract/protection plan in Cleveland, Tennessee? I own this house, and I don't want problems.

Thanks for your input  :)

Didn’t you get a house inspection per your mortgage? If not you should get one by a reliable inspector. Even though it should have been done prior to the sale.

You can also look around yourself for damage from the little buggers…..if you know what you are looking for……I’m gonna go with the pro inspection dude would work best….he knows what and where to look for them and other problems that might be present.

Pablo,

As Tom said, get it inspected. Carpenter ants are also very destructive.

A little tip to keep bugs out. Sprinkle Boraxo all around your foundation every year.

Cleveland, Tenn. is a great place to live. I worked at the Duracel Battery plant warehouse for about six months back in about 2008 and if I was going to move I'd really consider moving to Cleveland. Tennessee was voted the best state to live in a few years back. High sales tax but no income tax. You also have to show I.D. to buy beer no matter how old you are. It makes you feel young.  :D

Oh I had a professional inspection all right. No damage found. But my question is, should I get a protection plan/contract?

How old is the house? If it’s “old” like 50-75 years old and it hasn’t had a problem per inspection…..Things must be ok….but these days protection is always a good thing.

The inspection offers no future protection or guarantee that the little buggers won't decide to take up residence next week.  Undetected termite damage can do tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage and your homeowners doesn't cover it but fortunately for me the insurance covered my damage.  So I speak from personal experience...  Get the coverage!

In South Carolina, a termite inspection (CL100) is required before you can close on a property.  I'm surprised the same isn't true in Tennessee.

One more thing Pablo:

You need to find out if it is currently under a termite contract from the previous owner.  If it is you can have it transfered to your name, usually for a small fee, otherwise they will have to do a complete inspection and treatment which isn't cheap.  My contract is $150.00/year.

Thanks everybody, my question has been answered and I appreciate it. Zero tolerance for swarmers here at The Wolcott Ranch, I'm getting a contract.

No termites or carpenter ants here. But we get cicadas. And they get into everything. During the last infestation I belonged to a home racing group. We did a lot of crazy stuff to lighten the meetings, like having trailer races on one member's oval. We were racing at a member's track, which was in a garage, on a nice warm summer's night. The dam cicadas were getting all over the track and buzzing around us while we were trying to drive. One guy came up with the idea of a "cicada race", where we would put cicadas inside the cars as drivers. He took a picture of the cars coming over a rise, three abreast, with those bug-eyed drivers peering out of the windscreens. He posted it on our club website. Funniest slot racing snapshot I have ever seen. I don't know what the bugs were thinking, but it must have been very traumatic for them. Only three of the seven "drivers" survived.
