Over the past twenty or so years I've been steadily working at improving the 1/24th Classic Carreras using off the shelf parts. Some of these were less than wonderful but some recent offerings in the motor / axle carrier has turned things around.

Along the way I've been lucky to get help from Bruce Yeomans at Cincy Slots, Michael Kastner at Slotcar Factory / Frankenslot and most recently from Oscar Azevedo and Slotinvasion.

I thought about talking about all the things I've tried but this is a race report and so I'll discuss the pieces and parts in another post except for one item which is the motor/ axle carriers from Slotinvasion and more recently (As far as I know.) from Frankenslot.

I was surfing slot pages on Facebook and came across a group in Germany running newer Carrera Porsches and in one picture I saw this nice bright red motor box with the axle carrier molded in. Since my biggest problems had been sloppy gear mesh due to these being two separate carriers I inquired and was sent to Slotinvasion.de.

They referred me to Oscar here in the U.S. as their distributor and he has helped me equip my car with SI motor carriers and now we have managed to hold one full race without any failures!

That was Carrera Palooza I.

So let's push them harder and see if we can break something!

Since we have 12 cars and a 4 lane track it was decided to run 3 IROC type races and combine the scores... if they finish three races.

So we set up the tent and all five sections of my Vortex track.

Stan took the job of dusting the track.

Only 78 feet to go Dude!

He also did his best Ryland Grace imitation and created a nice Excel compiler to tally up the results.

Thanks to everyone who arrived early and/or stayed late to set up and tear down!!!

THE BIG RACE

Well, three races actually. Here are the cars for all three races and the line up for race # 1

The Collextion 651kb.png

Paloozamobiles 965kb.png

The entire group of 12 cars consist of an old Porsche 906, several Ferrari 330P/412, three Ford GT40 MkII, two Porsche 917K, two Lola T-70 Mk IIIb and a Ferrari 512S.

What ensued was collective mayhem, cars crashing, cars rolling, cars flying to the floor even!

But the all finished and six exhausted racers had smiles on their faces.

I kept screen shots of all the TrackMate race results screens but here's how it went;

Race 1. Rick / Doobie / Stan

Race 2. Steve / Stan / Rick

Race 3. Steve / Rick / KC

Here is Stan's totalized Result

Along the way we had sponsored the individual races and Steve collected another prize for the overall win.

We actually finished those three races earlier than I had expected and so it was time for Rick's 1/32 GT3s.

Rick's GTs 1mb.png

This is a new class for us designed to run newer GT cars with up to 21,400 rpm angle winder motors on silicoated foam tires. It's also a place to run older cars updated to this spec. New cars include the Sideways Ford GTE and MRslotcar McLaren GT1, etc. Some of the older cars included NSR C6R Corvettes and NSR Aston Martins.

Rick ran his new Lambo and won the first race for this class.

In this race we were joined by Kent, one of Bob Newnum's old friends who raced long ago. He's been wanting to do it again and I think we got the hook in his mouth! He had to scoot out after the race but he had a big grin.

Next was 1/32 NY Modifieds

Road course Style. Here's how that went!

Modified Schmozzle 557kb.png

These cars have a 3D printed chassis, nice brass work and very cool folded plastic bodies.

We bought them as kits and added H&R Cobra 26K motors and Pro Track tires.

Here's a look.

Tires are silicoated on the rear and fronts are made slippery with Future Floor Wax.

(Or whatever it's called now.)

I had to channel my inner #14 but at least I didn't get skunked at my own race this time!

YAY!

Next race was back up to 1/24th scale with Scaleracing's killer Trans Am cars.

I messed up and didn't get a shot of the cars, Rick and Lee have both rebodied theirs with model kits. I'll have to post this when I get pictures.

I didn't even get a screen shot off the computer!

Lucky that Steve got a shot of the winner in front of one of the screens!

Congratulations to Rick

This was a race of rock em sock em fun with lots of laughing.

Lee added realism when his car slid along the banking and tore off a sticker and dragged it all the way back to the finish line.

Then somebody hit me... and not a little bit... LOL

We had two more races on the schedule but Lee suggested we level one section of the track and it was agreed to by all because we had quite a jump there due to the sections being built at different times in different places and also because of the slope where the garage floor becomes driveway.

When was the last time you worked on your track with a Sawzall?

Thanks to everyone who could come out and race.

This is the motor / axle carrier kit I prefer for the 1/24th Carreras. I have been using RMS24 motors lately with no failures I've been replacing the lighting circuit with Slot-it SP16c
