It has been seven months since Can-Am visited the Figure 8, but that’s just what we did in this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. Nine drivers headed to tech, racing in the 4-on/5-off format, running the outside lanes first followed by the inside, all over eighteen heats.

The mostly Can-Am 9 Car Field:

It was clear after his first heat that Noah Ball was going to run away with this one as he was posting high lap totals and the fastest times. Meanwhile, three drivers were in a close race for the remaining two podium positions.

By the move to the inside lanes, Noah had 232 laps, good for a seventeen-lap lead over Nick Ball and Dave Panich who were tied for second with 215 laps each. Ray Lee was just one lap back of the second-place tie. With 200 laps, Richard Payne was in fifth with Mike from Ohio hot on his heels at 199 laps. Joe Yates and Rolly Lapierre Jr. were running even at 194 laps while Steven Sacchetti closed out the field.

After the move to the inside lanes Noah continued to drive away from everyone else, while Ray came alive and moved up as Dave got stuck in yellow (literally) and fell off the pace. When time ran out, Noah took the win by 33 laps with Ray edging Nick for second by six track sections. Dave finished one lap behind Nick in fourth. Richard held on to fifth as Mike faded and Joe settled into a rhythm to move up to sixth.

Noah posted the fastest lap of the night with a 2.914 on black while Ray and Nick both posted identical second-fastest times of 3.015.

Recommended set up for Can-Am on the Hillclimb:

     Braid depth: Set for no lift at .010”

     Body: Ti-22 by JK, Kelly, RTR, DDS.

     Gearing: 11:27

     Tires: any soft or super soft Wonder, possibly untreated. NO Black Magic.

     Weight: 108 – 112 grams

     Time to shoot for: 3.9 seconds.

Recommended set-up for F-1 on the Hillclimb:

     Braid depth: same as above

     Body: McLaren M7 by Parma, DDS or Kelly

     Gearing: 10:27 or 9:25

     Tires: same as above

     Weight: 110-112 grams

     Time to shoot for: 4.0 seconds    

General Race Event Procedures and Schedule:

Track will be open for practice on Friday afternoon for practice at 1:00 pm.

Track opens Saturday morning at 8:00 am.

Entry fees for each class will be collected at tech, cash only please.

Entry fee for each class is $15 plus $20 pit pass for race day.

Tech for Can-Am opens at 9:30 am.

Tech will open for F-1 one hour after conclusion of the Can-Am race.

Points will be awarded for both NERR and RETRO East Series.

Tire NOTE: Parma Black Magic tires are not permitted at PJ Raceway.

I am looking for a way to get new people in my door, and I think it could help all of us. 

So, if a bunch of us track owners all have a 'open' house event on the same weekend we could sell it to the news stations as a national event which should buy us a louder voice. Think about it, if from coast to coast on a given weekend raceways and club have an 'open' house. Maybe some free track time. Maybe asking for donations to help a local cause. Have some of your racers show up to talk to people. Here we have two HO clubs, a oval track club, and my Retro races and flexi car races and we all want more people but how do they find us? Plus what is a slot car anyways?

I'm a little crazy but I am willing to give up a weekend or most of it to get more people in the door.

Anybody out there interested?

So I started out by setting up some design criteria:

1. Both cars appear to share the same 3 ¾” wheelbase and ¾” guide lead.

2. I would use a Mabuchi 16D with the rear axle carrier clipped to the can drive and the front end would be screwed to the front of the endbell … just like the original.

3. The chassis would be as minimalist as possible … just like the original.

I started with the motor first and was able to procedure both a 16D can and endbell with hardware from Professor motor. I drilled the can with my 16D drill jig and painted it a tangerine orange that I think matches the original color perfectly. Martin had gifted me some vintage Classic stickers that complete the look.

I was thinking of procuring a vintage 16D arm but realized I had a balanced Pro Slot 16D arm which fit perfectly. So in it went and I finished off with a pair of NOS 16D brushes that Rick gifted me. It looks the business and runs smooth and cool.

My custom sized gizmos cost almost nothing and take very little time.

I'll bet you can find some used JK 3/32  X .400 plastic hubs for nothing.

First, narrow the hubs on your truer as desired and sand off the flash nubs.

The washers are a perfect snug fit, trim and true quickly, precisely, and can easily be re-used.

I did two at a time today, worked perfect.

Jig wheel math:

Desired clearance .039" X 2 = .078

Desired wheel OD .680 - .078 = .602"

Too many racers have conflicts and can't attend.

Stock Cars on the American Royal was the featured race in this week’s edition of  the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series. Nine racers ran in the 4-on/5-off format, hitting the outside four lanes first then heading to the inside four, all over eighteen heats.

Nine Stock Cars in Tech:

Ray Lee had the fastest car on the track with Rob Hayes fractionally slower and the pair easily pulled away from the rest of the field. By the move to the inside lanes, Rob had a two-lap lead on Ray with Woody Hazelwood running in third, six laps in arrears at 168 laps. Dave Panich and Cody Pare’ were four laps behind Woody and tied for fourth. Rick Pare’ was fifth with 153 laps while John Mills led Richard Payne by two, 149 to 147. Steven Sacchetti closed out the field with 144 laps.

The race to the checkered flag saw Rob drive to victory over Ray by just under two laps.  Woody hung on to third, thirteen laps out of second while the tie between Cody and Dave went Dave’s way. The rest of the field finished in the same order as at the halfway point, with the closest finish between John and Richard who were also separated by less than two laps.

Ray posted the fastest lap of the night; a blistering 3.790 on the blue lane. Both he and Rob set lap times well below the existing NERR record of 3.855. Though not records, Woody and Cody also posted sub 4-second laps. The blue lane was the fast way around the Royal, as six of the nine racers set their fastest lap on blue.

In addition, though not official, Rob and Ray also broke Ray’s existing NERR record for total laps (346/1).

The NERR race report, points, and current track records that Dave uploaded to Slotblog today, none of these three are displaying on my phone, or my iPad. Have not experienced on the site this before.

The race report from the F1 race at Modelville, which does not require any downloading, reads and responds perfectly well, as always. Dave uploaded this today as well.

I have rebooted both iPad and phone, but this hasn't made a difference so far as being able to view these three documents. As I say, have never experienced this before.

The MVH Tuesday Night Retro series headed to the Gerding King to run F-1 this past week. Eight drivers passed tech with racing in the 4-on/4-off format, running the outside four lanes and then moving to the inside four, all over 16 heats.

Eight F-1 Cars in Tech:

In the early running, Cody Pare’ took the lead over Ray Lee and Woody Hazelwood. By the move to the inside lanes, Cody’s 171 laps gave him a four-lap lead on Ray who was another three laps up on Woody. Nine laps back with 155 on the counter, John Mills was two up on Rick Pare’, with Richard Payne and Rolly Lapierre Jr. in hot pursuit. Steven Sacchetti closed out the field.

The inside lanes saw Cody extend his margin over Ray while Woody closed the gap but was unable to catch up, leaving the running order unchanged at the checkered flag. In fact, the running order didn’t change throughout the field after the move to the inside.  

Cody posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.988 on orange with no one else within a tenth. Ray, Woody and John were all solidly in the 4.1s.

This change is to accommodate the opening points race for KF SLOT SHOP in Richland Washington .

I think the car looks like a truck, so the idea is to turn it into an elegant racer with a big engine and silicone tires.

A Prescott hill-climb version, featuring dual rear wheels.

Of course, such a version never actually existed.

But why not? It’s only a 1/24 scale toy.

The chassis is a simple brass design that sits very low to the track, while the body is made of wood and plastic.

We had 12 racers on the roster. One of those racers Garrett Sisk from the Tri cities was here to set some records along with his dad Jeff Sisk. Jeffs first time racing with us. Starting out on Ken's track with Stock cars. Garrett Sisk wasted no time laying down some smooth laps to take first place and erase the old track record held by his good friend Chance Overholt with 125 laps. Bruce Schmitt from Richland Washington and Tom Sunday from Pasco Washington battled for second place with Bruce Schmitt winning by just a few feet to claim second with 117 laps putting Tom Sunday in 3rd place with 117 laps. Track owner Leroy Sanders and Idaho's Robert Clements had their own battle for third place with Leroy edging out Robert for third with 114 laps and Robert Clements in Fourth with 114 laps.

Next class up F-1 on the red track.

Garrett once again ripped off lap after lap this time trying to erase Robert Clements track record of 155 laps but fell short with only 153 laps but still took first place. Tom Sunday of Pasco coming in second place with 145 laps and track owner Leroy Sanders in third with 140. Idaho's Robert Clements wasn't quite in the grove and took fourth place with 138 laps.

Lunch Break. Pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, Pork-n-beans, chips and apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

Garrett Sisk had to work for this win but managed to tie Chance Overholt's record and take the win with 124 laps. Robert Clements tried putting the pressure on but just couldn't make it and fell to second place with 120 laps. Richland Bruce Schmitt claiming third place with 118 laps and Leroy Sanders in fourth with 115 laps.

Last class up Coupe on the red track.

This turned out to be a heartbreaker for Garrett Sisk. He drove every lane color flawless until Blue lane said not going to happen today. The Blue lane apparently had some clearance issues with his body on the car so in a certain spot (not always) he would take a trip into the wall. Unfortunately he was not able to set a new record leaving Chance Overholt's record of 162 laps to live on for another month. Garrett took first place with 161 laps. As Garrett said if not for the Blue lane issues he would have obliterated Chances record. These guys are good friends and very competitive ones at that. Robert Clements of Idaho pushed himself to rack up 159 laps to take second place. Tom Sunday from Pasco Washington was also in the mix and claimed third place with 156 laps. Leroy Sanders rounding out fourth with 144 laps.

I remember seeing yellow, blue, red, orange and there is a thread discussing marbleized colored tires - I forgot what they were called?!

Were there other colors?

What slot car brands offered them on their RTR Cars?

What was the purpose of doing this?

Were the colors different hardness?

This was something I've always been curious about and hope you gents can provide me with some historical education about them please.

It was back to the Figure 8 to run Stock Cars in this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. A field of seven ran in the 4-on/3-off format, driving the outside four lanes first and then moving to the inside four, all over fourteen heats.

Noah Ball was posting the fastest times in practice and once the race began moved to the head of the field. By the move to inside lanes, Noah had logged 213 laps and was five laps up on Woody Hazelwood while Dave Panich was another five laps back in third. Joe Yates was looking for a podium finish with 211 laps, just three laps behind Dave. Richard Payne and Rolly Lapierre Jr. were fairly close to each other in the race for fifth with 191 and 186 laps respectively while John Mills didn’t have the best start and closed out the field fifteen laps out of sixth.

Noah continued to drive away from the field in the second half, taking the win by ten laps over Woody. Joe saw his podium dreams fade late in the race, dropping fourteen laps back to Dave who completed the podium, but Joe managed to finish well ahead of Richard in fifth. Rolly and John closed out the field.

Noah’s 3.179 on green was the fastest lap of the night as Woody and Dave both posted best lap times in the 3.2s, but a half and full tenth slower.

I bought this stuff some time ago the other day I painted up a body and was getting ready to trim it. I have used the double-sided tape Scotch brand applied to a brass plate to stick to the side of the body. Well, it sticks way too much, and you almost tear the body apart getting it to release. I saw this hanging on my wall and it is Poster Tape, designed to release easier, and it does. I took a 3/4 " brass strip applied a 1/4" strip of this tape cutting it essentially in half with my X-Acto knife. Pulled the backing off, lined it up on the body, and made a cut. When the cut was made I was able to remove the plate from the body a lot easier than the double-sided tape.

NERR General Race Event Procedures and Schedule:

Track will be open for practice on Friday evening prior to the race from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Pit pass for the evening is $10.00.

Track opens Saturday morning at 7:00 am.

Entry fees for each class will be collected at tech, cash only please.

Entry fee for each class is $15 plus $10 pit pass for race day.

Tech opens at 9:00 am, closes at 10:00 am or when the last car clears inspection if earlier than 10:00.

Cars in Tech shall be impounded and not handled by the car owner or other racers. 

Track power will be shut off at 9:30 am.

Qualifying starts 15 minutes after close of tech.

Lane selection will be immediately after qualifying. Drivers who are not present during lane selection will be assigned a lane at random by the race director.

Racing begins 10 minutes after qualifying.

Race heats will be 3 minutes in length with 2 minutes between heats.

Prior to the start of each Main a one-minute warm-up will be provided. Sit-outs (if any) have the option of a one-minute warm-up.  

Tech will open for the next class no less than one hour after conclusion of the previous race or as stated by the Race Director--track power will be shut off 15 minutes after tech opens.

There will be no move-ups regardless of size of the field. Overall standings will be determined by total laps and sections regardless of main.

Acceptable Tires: MVH allows the use of all retro tires, including Parma Black Magic.

Next Retro races will be on the Flat track on September 12. 

I am looking for someone from the past again, a person by the name of Greg Holland. He put out the vintage slot racing newsletter in the '90s. Does any one know him or know what happened to him? The VSRN was a great little publacation.

After a two-week summer break, an even dozen drivers showed up to run Coupes on the American Royal in this week’s return to MVH Tuesday Night Retro racing. The event was run on the middle six lanes over twelve heats with ample marshals and one person to run the race.

Since Ray Lee migrated back north in the spring, we’ve run three Tuesday night races on the Royal, and he won all three! Tonight it looked like a similar outcome was in store as Ray was the first driver to log a lap in the 3.5s and he consistently was posting high lap totals. However, there were five other drivers thinking they too had a shot, making for an evening of fast laps and close racing. Cody Pare’ and Woody Hazelwood eventually got into the 3.5s and were the only other drivers to do so. But three more drivers (Dave Panich, Noah Ball and Rob Hayes) managed to post 3.61 laps, so the outcome was going to be determined by who did better staying on the track and avoiding the inevitable.  

When time ran out, so did Ray’s luck, as Woody was better at avoiding the inevitable, taking the win by thirteen track sections with both drivers posting identical 278 lap totals. Despite spending a bit more time out of the slot than he would have liked, Cody claimed the bottom step on the podium, finishing two laps back. In fourth, Dave led the 3.61 second pack, one lap behind Cody while Noah was fifth with Rob just one lap behind in sixth.

John Mills and Gil Aubin both set lap times in the 3.7s, but Gil dropped out towards the end of the race as John led the rest of the field in seventh place. Joe Yates trailed by eleven laps in eighth while Richard Payne suffered chassis failure and finished with a loaner, two laps behind Joe. Another two laps back, Rolly Lapierre Jr. finished tenth while Steven Sacchetti trailed by one in eleventh.    

Ray posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.562 in yellow with Cody fractionally slower at 3.568.

With Modelville Hobby closed for Richard and Sue’s annual trek to Maine, this week’s episode of the MVH Tuesday Night Retro series relocated to Rooster’s Raceway in Southwick, MA, to run GT Coupes. It was also a good opportunity for the racers to log some track time on the ex-MVH Hillclimb for the upcoming NERR event scheduled for October 17. Eleven drivers showed up for practice, but we had one DNS, leaving a field of ten. Racing was on the middle six lanes, with four marshals and the DNS driver (Nick Ball) to run the computer. A big thanks to Nick for running the race!

The GT Coupe Field (ignore the one Can-Am car):  

Noah Ball and Gary Clinton Jr. had the two fastest cars on the track, and both were putting up big lap totals from the get-go. Most drivers were struggling with the reverse camber deadman, especially on the outside lanes. As Noah and Gary drove away from the field, Greg Burstein and Dave Panich looked like they were in a battle for the bottom podium step while Rob Hayes, Ryan Archambault and Woody Hazelwood were running side-by-side in the race for the title of “best of the rest”. Meanwhile, Larry Labounty had gear issues and fell off the pace while Gil Aubin and Dave Gesner dropped out early in the competition. 

When the dust settled, Noah took the win with 223 laps, five laps up on Gary. Dave Panich finished third, with 199 laps, well behind Gary, and five laps up on Greg. Rob claimed best of the rest, finishing two laps up on Ryan, who was another lap ahead of Woody, while Larry closed out the field.

I have been racing 1/24 scale slot cars on big wooden tracks, on and off since late 1960’s.
I had come to the point where I looked in disdain on 1/32 scale plastic cars running on plastic tracks.
Digital racing in particular seemed something from a toy store. Not a real hobby.

Well, no more. I stand corrected!

Since Corona, 3 local clubs joined forces and now share the same location as one club under one roof.
First, some of my club mates invited me to go to Naples, Italy, and race 1/32 scale NSR cars in the 24-hour WRE.
A massive event with no less than 4 major, 30+ meter, 8-lane tracks. 32 teams of 150+ racers competing for 24 hours.

Long story short, I am amazed of the speed and quality of these little critters.
They are indeed made for real slot racing, and boy, do they also look pretty. (But still Analog racing)

Next, my club build a large, very nice, 4-lane, Policar racetrack, equipped with lane changes and setup for digital racing using the Slot.it oXigen system.
This allows for up to 20 cars to be running on the track at the same time.

Having build the track they then told me, oh, we are only going to race on lane-2 and 3!
Lane-1 and lane-4 are marshaling tracks. If you go off, your car is placed back on either lane-1 or 4.

Then when you get to the next merging point on the track, you are forced into one of the racing lanes, 2 or 3.

The track is purposely not in any figure-8 shape. This means that lane-2 is 60 cm shorter than lane-3.
In other words, if possible, you want to run on the faster lane-2.

Now, that is not always possible. If you come up from the back to another car, and you think you are faster, you need to find a way around.

That usual means shifting to lane-3, which is marginal slower. Question is if you are so much faster, that you can complete the overtake.

If you are brave, you might try the “Cobra maneuver”. Dropping into lane-1 before the large turn with 360 degrees left followed by 180 degrees right,

hoping that you can jump your competitor, before you are forced back to lane-2, half a track later. This is rarely successful, only a few have managed to do it.

I admit. I have been bitten. Digital racing at this level is wonderful.

First of all, we race!

Even though we employ lane changers, It, is nothing like running toy trains. Not at all.
It is not a case of running the shorter ideal line either. That is a misconception.

We do not change lanes unless we have to. It is a strategical decision. But if you do change lane, be prepared for the minute disruption of your racing while shifting lane,

and be prepared for negotiating the next corners at a different radius than last lap. You cannot rely on rhythm; you need to instantly adapt you’re driving.

This is why I have come to love digital racing so much.
Forget the toys, but don’t knock it until you have tried it on a professional level.
I am sure you will find it amazing.

I got in a hurry trying to take apart a JK 21 and managed to bend the thin steel crossbar at the back of the chassis. I don't see them offered on JK's catalog and I was wondering where I could buy steel rods that are the same diameter. I don't yet have a caliper to measure the diameter but they look to be in the .5 to 1 mm range.

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

As you can see, once I position a pinion gear on the motor shaft, there’s no way that spur gear will properly engage.

Also, I obviously have to select a less wide set of rear wheels to avoid contact of that motor shaft. Rats! I love these old orange sponges.

Anyway guys, please help me out with this setup and enlighten me on the bast path forward.

One last question – the allen fastener on this particular (all-aluminum) spur has an odd, rather tiny head, and my regular allen drive I use on the other gears and wheels isn’t small enough to use on this application. Can you let me know what size of driver I require?

The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series visited the 220’ American Model Raceways Sovereign this week to run Can-Am. With ten drivers, racing was limited to the middle four lanes and was in the 4-on/6-off format with four (or five) marshals on the corners and one person to run the computer.

Ten Can-Am Racers in Tech:

Noah Ball was posting sub-seven second times in practice and continued his fast ways when racing got under way to jump out to an early lead. Meanwhile, John Weaver, Woody Hazelwood and Rob Hayes were closing in on seven second laps to keep him honest in the race for the bottom two podium steps.

When time ran out, Noah had posted exactly 100 laps to take the win by a lap over John. In the race for third, Woody and Dave Panich ended up tied with 95 laps and 16 sections each, but Woody was slightly ahead of Dave. Six laps back, Rob ended up tied with Joe Yates at 89 laps each, but Rob’s 35 sections put him ahead of Joe giving him fifth place. Dan Savage and Richard Payne finished a lap apart with Dan at 86 and Richard at 85. Steven Sacchetti and Rolly Lapierre Jr. closed out the field.   

Noah’s 6.968 on blue was the fastest lap of the night with Woody (7.023), Weaver (7.031) and Rob (7.032) all posting respectable lap times in the 7.0s.

The result was a spirited group of 13 racers, younger than our normal mix, but quite capable.  As I thought about how I was going to describe this month's event, I thought about calling it the "Chance" race.  But when the dust settled at the end of the day, I decided the better title was the "No Chance" race.  Because try as we might, there was NO CHANCE we were going to catch him in any class.  He won all four classes by 6, 4, 14, and 6 laps respectively.

Actually, we did have one racer who at least pushed Chance each time.  Local area race Robert Clements finished second in every race, with margins of 3, 7, 6, and 8 laps in the same four classes.

Beyond these two, however, there was fierce competition.  The third place on the podium was claimed by a different racer in each class, meaning that in the end, 6 of the 13 racers claimed a podium position, showing that it was, indeed, a competitive field.  And in 3 of the 4 classes, the margin between 3rd and fourth was a single lap!

Let's get to the details.

Race 1 was stock cars on the red track.  As you can see, there were several close battles.  After the 1-2 pair of Chance and Robert, John Mattoon claimed the first additional podium position.

I was gifted this car a few months back as my first car after getting back into slot cars, and I cleaned it up as best I could and got it running.

It runs quite well for the age of it. Thinking if it is worth it I might rebuild it and keep it as a spare as i use my brushless cars mainly now.

However I tried to do a search and couldn't find exactly the same.

Thinking maybe it is a hybrid possibly, it has Mura 20 on the sticker inside the motor on the windings.

Also the chassis I think is a Flexi Kar Mk 1 chassis possibly.

By the middle end of the first heat, two of the brushless cars were out with broken cars. By the end of the second heat, the other two brushless cars were out. They came back on and off, with one finishing way back. When one of the brushless cars finished a whole heat, it was about 5 laps ahead for the heat. So overall finish was C12, C12, BL, BL, BL, BL, with three cars finishing. And the two C12 cars finished 10 laps apart.

I give the guys running the 2two fastest brushless a lot of kudos, they were prepared, and going up against two guys with 40 years hard experience and very mature cars. But bottom line, the brushless cars have a long way to go in this kind of wing car racing.

It was a tough day for the brushless guys.

Generally speaking, should a 4" NASCAR body be mounted with the rear wheels close to the very back of the body? 

Concurrently, are there situations where you would want to shift the mounting the body forwards, even to the point of making a small cutout for the guide?

• Charger Rear height:   Maximum 1.375".  This is measured when the car is resting on all four wheels on the tech block from the surface to the top of the rear spoiler. 
• Daytona rear height:  Maximum 1.0" measured when the car is resting on all four wheels on the tech block from the surface to the of the rear deck.  
• Charger rear bumper height:  Min. .750" measured from top of the spoiler down. 
• Daytona rear bumper height:  MIn. .5" measured from top of the deck down.
• Wheel wells:  Rear's may be trimmed out to allow for tire clearance. Fronts must follow the trim line.

In this week’s edition of the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series eight of the usual suspects ran in the 4-on/4-off format, driving their Stockcars on the outside four lanes of the Figure 8 first and then moving to the inside four, all over sixteen heats.

Once again, the field divided itself into two groups with the fast five opening a considerable gap to the rest of the field. By the move to the inside lanes, John Weaver had a slim two-lap lead over Noah Ball, 215 laps to 213. Cody Pare’ and Woody Hazelwood were in a close race for the bottom step of the podium with Cody five laps behind Noah and two laps up on Woody while Dave Panich was another four laps back in fifth place with 202 laps. There was a seventeen-lap gap to Richard Payne running in sixth place with 185 laps while Matt Creapeau was three laps down. Steven Sacchetti closed out the field.

The move to the inside lanes was more of the same as the finishing order was identical to the order at the halfway point with Weaver taking the win by six laps over Noah. The race for third place went to Cody as he held on to take the position by three laps over Woody while Dave stayed in fifth, another four laps back. Rich Payne stayed in sixth, thirty-two laps back, while in seventh, Matt finished fourteen laps behind Rich. Steven struggled in the late stages and closed out the field.

Weaver posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.125 on green with Noah and Cody close behind at 3.180 and 3.187, both also running in the green lane.

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on called YATSS, short for Yet Another Timing/Scoring System.

YATSS is a home-built slot car lap timing and race-control system. It uses an Arduino Nano ESP32 at the track for sensor input and track power control, with a Windows race-control app handling lap counting, race flow, qualifying, heat races, timing display, reports, and serial logging.

The basic idea is that the microcontroller stays simple and reliable. It watches the lane sensors, timestamps debounced edges, and sends those events to the Windows app over USB serial. The Windows app does the higher-level work: lap validation, minimum lap time filtering, heat management, qualifying order, race reports, and track calls.

Current features include:

• Practice mode
• Heat race mode
• Qualifying support
• 2 to 8 active lanes
• More racers than lanes
• Configurable lane names and colors
• Minimum lap time filtering
• Controller-side debounce
• Serial logging
• Spoken countdowns / announcements
• Track power cut and restore commands
• Demo modes for testing without live hardware

The sensor circuit I’ve been testing uses dead strips feeding an optocoupler circuit. The controller sees a clean falling edge from each lane. Track power control is handled separately with relay-driver circuits, so the Arduino pin only drives a MOSFET gate while the MOSFET handles the relay coil current.

This is still very much an active project, but it has reached the point where the major pieces are coming together: sensor input, serial communication, Windows app logic, saved settings, race flow, and hardware power control.

The project is currently in a private GitHub repository. I’m using that mostly as a place to keep the code, notes, and documentation organized while development continues.

My goal is not to claim this is the one true way to build a timing system. It’s more of a practical, buildable system for my own track that may be useful or interesting to others who like combining slot cars, electronics, and software.

I’d be glad to discuss the design, hardware choices, lessons learned, and tradeoffs as the project continues to evolve.
