The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series elected to run F-1 on the American Royal this week. In addition to six MVH regulars, John Luongo made a rare Tuesday night appearance. Thus, seven racers headed to tech with racing in the 4-on/3-off format, running the outside four lanes first then moving to the inside four.

Early on John Mills looked like he was going to give Bob “Woody” Hazelwood a run for his money, but Woody proved to be faster on every lane except the white lane, taking a four-lap lead at the move to the inside lanes. Two laps behind, Joe Yates was running in third while four laps back Steven Sacchetti and Richard Payne were in a virtual tie for fourth, separated by just track sections. John Luongo and Rolly Lapierre Jr. closed out the field.  

The second half of the race mixed things up a bit as Woody drove away from the field, taking the win by eleven laps, while Joe outdrove John M. to take second by five laps. Likewise, Richard dominated the inside lanes to get past Steven to move up to fourth. John L. finished in sixth place as Rolly closed out the field.

Woody posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.776 on orange while John M. had the second fastest lap with a 3.816 on blue.

I have a four-year-old son who has really started enjoying slot car racing at home. I have a four-lane routed wooden track with independently adjustable power supplies, so I've been turning the voltage down to help him learn throttle control without constantly deslotting. He's having a blast.

I race 16D Flexi cars on Thursday nights at our local club, and we run 1/24 hardbody events a couple of times a year. The club track runs a fixed 13.5v. I'm thinking ahead to eventually introducing him to club racing, although that's still a ways down the road. I also have a younger son who is almost two, so ideally I'd like to invest in something both boys could use as they get older. I've been looking at the Third Eye FETroller 2 with the electronic choke. My main question is how much the choke can actually limit power. Could it make a 16D Flexi manageable for a beginner on a 13.5v track, even with the trigger fully pulled?

I'm not looking to rush them into racing. Just trying to plan ahead and find a controller that could grow with them as their driving skills improve.

I'd appreciate any experiences with the FETroller 2 or recommendations for other controllers with adjustable chokes.

• Design & Purpose: The Parma FCR (typically 4.0-inch or 4.5-inch wheelbase) was introduced as an affordable, durable, and standardized entry-to-mid-level brass/steel chassis platform for scale/stock car racing (often run with 16D-style motors and hard-body or Lexan scale NASCAR/touring car shells).

• Characteristics: Known for a relatively heavy brass construction that gave cars a planted, realistic scale-racing feel compared to ultra-lightweight group or "Flexi" speed demons. Common racer tweaks included adding piano-wire "U" braces or soldering reinforcements to keep the brass frame straight through crashes.

• Legacy & Transition: Production of the classic Parma FCR line eventually wound down, leaving a strong legacy in club and vintage-style racing series. Today, Mid-America Slot Car Products continues to support Parma's catalog with their "GRC" which is a continuation of the Parma FCR design. Other aftermarket developers have since stepped in to offer updated brass/aluminum equivalents (such as Vantage R&D's Python chassis) inspired by the FCR footprint.

For this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro Race, Coupes headed to the Gerding King for the first time in almost two years (Jan 2025). Seven drivers were in attendance with racing in the 4-on/3-off format, running the outside lanes first and then the inside, all over 14 heats.

Seven Coupes in Tech:

Once again, the race became two races as the fastest three cars put a gap on the rest of the field, with close racing in both groups. As Dave Panich, Rob “Pedro Podium” Hayes and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood were fighting it out for the podium, Joe Yates, Steven Sacchetti, Richard Payne and Rolly Lapierre Jr. were racing to be the “best of the rest”. By the move to the inside lanes, Dave had put seven laps between himself and Rob, 170 to 163, while at 160 laps, Woody was solidly in third.

Nine laps back in fourth, Joe Yates held a one-lap lead over Steven who was two laps up on Richard. Rolly trailed Rich by another three laps.

After the move to the inside lanes, Woody’s newly installed motor was picking up speed as he closed the gap to Rob but fell one lap short of second place as Dave cruised to the win with a sixteen-lap gap to second. The other race-in-a-race ended up extremely close as Joe held on the fourth with Steven just twelve sections behind. Richard finished in sixth place, three laps up on Rolly.

Dave posted the fastest lap of the night with a 4.103 on orange while Rob managed a 4.163 on blue. No lane seemed fastest as the seven racers posted their fastest laps on six different lanes. However, purple sure was fun to drive!

The shop was warm and the racing was hot. We had 10 racers on the roster. Everyone was fired up , happy and just having fun.

Stock car on Ken's track :

Track owner Leroy Sanders was able to stay out of trouble and edge out Robert Clements Moscow Idaho and Tim Gray of Richland with 112 laps to take first place.

Robert and Tim tied with Robert coming in 2nd bye just a few feet putting Tim in third both with 110 laps. Tom Sunday of Pasco in fourth place with 109 laps.

F-1 on the Red track :

Tom Sunday of Pasco Washington drove hard to keep Robert and Tim Gray in the rear view mirror to take the win with 146 laps.

Robert Clements a lap down to take second place with 145 laps.

Tim Gray in third with 143 laps. Paul Dwyer of Spokane and Wes Spencer of Genesee Idaho tied with 141 laps each.

Wes Spencer edged out Paul by just a couple feet for fourth.

Break for lunch :

Being the last race of the season we had a special lunch sort of Holliday themed since we won't see some of are racers until Spring of 2027.

Thank you to my lovely wife for preparing just a wonderful meal of Spiral cut ham. Mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and bacon, dinner rolls and green salad. Pumpkin pie and ice cream for dessert.

Can-Am on Ken's track :

Just a little back story here. Robert and Tim have had a few battles this season were they have tied. Unfortunately Tim seemed to be the one that always lost bye just inches but not today !!.

Tim and Robert kept an eye on each others heats and knew once again a tie was coming. Tim Gray ( owner of Timmy G's Slot Shop in Richland ) finally slayed the Dragon and got his first place with 121 laps putting Robert Clements of Idaho in second 121 laps. Much deserved Tim.

Tom Sunday of Pasco Washington in third with 118 laps with track owner Leroy Sanders taking fourth place with 116 laps.

Last race of the day and the season Coupe on the Red track:

Robert Clements laid down some fast times to stay out front to take first place with 159 laps followed bye you guessed it Tim Gray for second place with 158 laps.

Paul Dwyer of Spokane in third place with 140 laps. Tom Sunday of Pasco coming in fourth with 136 laps.

In the pictures you will see a cox chaparral on the podium for 3rd. Paul already had is stuff packed in the car when the pic was taken so we used a stand in.

Came across this photo from an AJ Foyt Facebook page. Three Lotus 40s (maybe 30's) with diaplanes and spoilers. It's like they were channeling the Team Russkit cars of Mike Morrisoey from the era or maybe the other way around. Art imitating art.

I noticed that the two brushes inside the motor are wearing at different rates. One is about halfway depleted while the other looks almost new.

What causes such uneven brush wear, and is there a method for making them wear more evenly?

According to store updates shared on the Scale Model Supplies official website, they plan to expand their extensive lines of paints, raw materials (like plastic, brass, and wood sticks), and detailed modeling parts. They also plan to open an online storefront once the physical move is fully settled.

This release makes it easier to try: there is now a Windows installer with .NET 10 included, so no separate runtime installation is necessary. Install it, select Mode > Demo Race, and you can watch a complete simulated race without connecting any hardware.

Since the previous beta, additions include Combined Distance Racing, independent qualifying groups with starting-lane choices, unfinished-race recovery, current-heat reruns, race archives, and improved handling of controller resets and communication failures. Reports are available as HTML, with optional JSON and CSV exports.

One point I want to emphasize: the supported-controller list is not a permanent restriction. Selected ESP32 boards and the Arduino UNO Q are supported today, but other microcontrollers can be added with a suitable adapter and validation. If you’re interested but already have a different board, please tell me what it is.

Windows is the primary environment. Experimental Linux operation through Wine is available as well; portable ZIP downloads remain available for that purpose.

There are still no production installations, and this is a beta for evaluation and careful testing, not a claim of race-ready hardware certification. Feedback from track owners and race directors would be especially useful.

Stock Cars were back on the Figure 8 in this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. A field of just five ran in the 2-or-3-on/3-or-2-off format, driving the outside four lanes first and then moving to the inside four, all over fourteen heats.

Once again Noah Ball was the driver to beat as he jumped out to an eighteen-lap lead by the move to the inside lanes, posting a total of 217 laps. Bob “Woody” Hazelwood was running in second place with Dave Panich and Richard Payne battling it out for the final podium position, 195 to 192 laps. In fifth place, Steven Sacchetti had a respectable 184 laps.

The second half of the race was more of the same, as Noah coasted to the win with a 31-lap cushion over Woody. Dave won the race for third, five laps behind Woody and fourteen laps up on Richard. Steven closed out the field.

Noah’s 3.180 on green was the fastest lap of the night with Woody’s 3.234 good enough for the second fastest lap.

The project supports two- and four-lane racing, heads-up and bracket timing, practice passes, lane choice, byes, advancement, and tournament reports. Hardware operation uses an Arduino Mega 2560 with beam sensors and light-tree outputs.

You do not need any hardware to try the demo. Download the Windows x64 ZIP, extract the complete folder, and run Start-Demo.cmd. Click New Demo Tournament to get sample racers and cars, then work through simulated heats and a final report. No separate .NET installation is required.

To be clear about its stage of development: lane-one sensors have completed passes using cardboard beam interruptions, and a one-lane light tree has been tested through legal starts and red lights. Sensor mounting still needs to be resolved before moving-car testing, and simultaneous four-lane track validation remains pending. This is an invitation to try the software, not a claim that it is ready to run a major race.

The software is free under the MIT license, and the source is public. I’d welcome reproducible bug reports and observations about the operator workflow.

This has won and been on podiums of large races. Bought it, sent it back to JW to go through it, and it has sat on the shelf. I just prefer to run my own stuff.

As an alternative, I might go for just the standard Defender center, although I'm hoping to find the Insane version.

Does anyone here have any experience with Haas S5C indexers? I am experiencing Ser Err and occasionally an ENCODR errors. The unit spins and errors out and it's obvious that the encoder isn't communicating with the servo control. I have checked the cable for continuity and it's good. The servo control will occasionally show positioning and then Hi-Power error out.

How do I test the encoder or the control box separately? I see some owners remove the encoder to clean it but there is no obvious way to remove it from the motor.

One more thing.... this is a red box and has the 17 pin connector.

A well-run slot racing series posted a race announcement a few days ago for an event at a raceway that is not listed in either Slotblog's Main Raceway list or the Club/Home raceway list.

Just proves that what I posted a few days ago in another thread is 100% true: "Honestly I don't know why I waste my time trying to maintain an accurate slot car raceway list, since it is obvious almost no one cares."

I'm pretty much at the end of my tether regarding my nearly two-decades long effort to maintain an accurate raceway list for the 1/24 hobby here at Slotblog.

When active Slotblog members who know about an unlisted raceway without helping to get it listed here, it shows I am truly wasting my time producing something people aren't interested in. Since I doubt this situation will ever change, the Slotbog Raceways Lists will likely be permanently deleted soon. Fair warning!

Wish someone could explain to me why so few people involved in the 1/24 hobby, including virtually all of the racers, raceway owners, manufacturers, and distributors, feel an accurate raceway list is so completely unimportant.

Entry fee for each class is $15 plus $10 pit pass for race day.
 
Tech opens at 9 AM, closes at 10 AM or when the last car clears inspection if earlier than 10:00.
 
Cars in Tech shall be impounded and not handled by the car owner or other racers.

Qualifying starts 15 minutes after close of tech.

F1 returned to the American Royal for this week’s MVH Tuesday night Retro race. With seven cars in tech, racing was in the 4-on/3-off format, running the outside four lanes first then moving to the inside four, all over fourteen heats.

Seven F-1 Cars in Tech:

Along with the usual Tuesday night crowd, Dom Luongo made a rare mid-week appearance to give the recently F1/Royal dominate Ray Lee a little competition. And, as it turned out, Dom was quite competitive, logging 188 laps and taking a four-lap lead over Ray into the change to the inside lanes. Meanwhile, Dave Panich, Woody Hazelwood and Rob Hayes were in a race for the bottom podium step at 181, 179, and 176 laps respectively. Richard Payne and Steven Sacchetti closed out the field.

After the move to the inside four, Ray turned up the wick, slipping past Dom to take the win by an even dozen track sections. Dave went into the final heat on blue one lap up on Woody, who was at the far end of the driver’s panel on black. As one would expect, the heat went Dave’s way as he bumped his hold on third to a seven-lap margin when time ran out. Rob stayed in touch with the front of the pack, finishing six laps out of fourth.   

Ray posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.504 on yellow with Dom’s second fastest lap almost a full tenth slower at 3.603. Fifth place finisher Rob Hayes was the third fastest car with a 3.719 on blue. Yellow was the fast lane on the Royal, hosting fastest laps for five of the seven racers.

My question here is whether or not I can use the 2 variable voltage power supplies that I had on my analog track with the Scalextric c7042 power base. In my collection I have 4 of the power supplies that came with the Scalextric APBs. I think they're 15 V/4a units. I have two 30 volt/ 10 amp power supplies. Is there any benefit to using them rather than the Scalextric ones? I reading up on the Scalextric system it seems that there is a way to reduce the power on the standard system to half power, but it has to go through the system. One the variable power supplies it's just a dial. But I don't know if that will work on the 7042. 

Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

I called the 1/32 track in Phoenix but I did not bring my cars. Oh, well!

For the second time this month it was back to the Gerding King to run F-1 this week in the MVH Tuesday Night Retro series. Ten drivers went through tech with racing on the middle six lanes over ten heats.

Ten F-1 Cars in Tech:

By the end of the first heat Noah Ball had logged four more laps, was over two-tenths faster than anyone else, and appeared to be on his way to an easy win. However, F-1 has a way of being unpredictable, and after a collision in the lead-on destroyed his guide flag he missed almost two full heats and fell out of the running.

Meanwhile, four racers, Ray Lee, Woody Hazelwood, Rob Hayes and Dave Panich, were posting similar lap totals and vying for a podium finish. Further back in the field, Nick Ball, Richard Payne and Joe Yates were racing for fifth, with Rolly Lapierre Jr. and Steven Sacchetti closing out the field. 

Dave’s podium hopes were dashed with a bent chassis and then a spun gear, leaving Ray, Woody and Rob to sort out the podium order. When time ran out, Ray took the win by just over three laps while Woody got the best of Rob by just over a lap. Noah returned to the track and, while not placing, posted the fastest lap of the night with a 4.020 on green.

Dave placed fourth, four laps off the podium and eight up on Nick in fifth while Richard was two laps back in sixth. Joe was another four laps behind while Rolly trailed by ten in eighth. Noah failed to catch Steven and settled for tenth.

By the time I get to "Now stand on one foot and rub your belly" they realize their car ain't goin' in reverse. Lol

A birthday party a week ago;

"OK, kids you got 5 more minutes".

"And then what?"

This past Sunday after kids sang Happy Birthday;

"What do we do now?"

"You sit quietly in your chair with your hands folded for the next 17 minutes......or you go play with either the slot cars or the Hot Wheels."

Thirteen racers, plus a couple of spectators who hope to join the fray in future races, lined up for each of the 4 classes, making a total of 52 entries for the day.  Of that group, almost everyone just hoped for some good races and maybe a podium finish here or there.  But one member of the group had a different mission. 

It all started two months ago.  At the time, Garrett Sisk held most, if not all, of the track records for the cars being raced that month.  We alternate which classes run on which tracks every other month, so the records I refer to are Stock and Can Am on the red track, F1 and Coupe on the blue.  If you look back at race results two months ago, you will see that Chance Overholt showed up and proceeded to wipe out ALL of his fellow Tri-Cities racer's records.  Since Garrett wasn't here that day, Chance would call him as each record was erased.

So now, two months later, Garrett was back, looking to reclaim his place on the record board.  He had hoped that Chance would also be here, but he wasn't.  So Garrett's goal was simple.  Not 4 wins, but 4 wins that would give him the right to return the calls he received.

So...how did it turn out?  By the way, kudos to the person that finds the error in what follows....

RACE 1 -- STOCK CARS

Lap record 156 (average of 39 laps per heat)

Garrett drew a favorable draw at the beginning of the race, paired with racers who could compete cleanly and on a track where passing was fairly easy, and with ideal track conditions.  Most racers can do heats in the range of 32-36 laps, so we were eager to see if Garrett could put together a whole race with almost a 40-lap average.  After 2 heats, it was clear that was NOT going to be a problem.  His 4 heats were 42, 40, 41, 41.  The 41 lap average crushed the old record by 8 laps.  Wow!

Tim Gray (also from from Tri-Cities) and local racer Robert Clements were also VERY fast, coming within 1 and 4 laps respectively of the old record.

Following these 3, there was a 16-lap gap to the rest of the pack, who were all bunched together.  Final results here:

GT Coupes headed to the American Aristocrat for this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. The field featured just six starters with the race run in the 3-on/3-off format, driving the inside lanes first, then the outside lanes, all over sixteen heats.  

Coupes in Tech:

John Mills has been working on his set-up and driving recently and tonight it appeared to be paying off as he led the race at the move to the inside lanes with 138 laps, one lap ahead of second-place driver Dave Panich. Joe Yates was in third, at 133 laps, while Richard Payne trailed by five more. Rolly Lapierre Jr. was three laps behind Richard and three ahead of Steven Sacchetti.

After the move to the inside lanes, Dave found his groove as John struggled with the blue lane. When time ran out, Dave took the win by six laps. Joe and Richard were racing even on the inside lanes, but in the end Joe’s first half lead put him comfortably on the bottom step of the podium. Likewise, Rolly and Stephen had an equal number of laps on the inside lanes, giving Rolly fifth place based on his outside-lane lead.

Dave posted the fastest time of the night with a 4.391 on purple while John’s best time of 4.541, also on purple, was the second fastest time of the night.

So today, I hit the track and once hooked up, I literally hit the track as my car took off and bongoed the wall head on, hard enough to break my nice Cahoza guide, something that I have never done before. Josh came over and we checked a few things, and it seemed to be OK, so back on the track, only to go nuts two laps later and wall shot another car. The power to the car issue was intermittent, but completely unpredictable, (i.e. it didn't matter if I was on the power or not). I can recognize defeat, so home I went.

I am now looking at the controller and there is no burnt anything, but my wiper is contact is loose in its hole, and the arm is bent ever so slightly up where the wiper contact goes through. Also, the wiper arm goes all the way to the screw holding the control panel on. Are these the culprits? Or could it be electronic issue.

The controller is an E 'Motion 2 with a 15 band wiper on it.

My usual thanks is applied and any and all help, scorn, whatever, is appreciated.

It has been seven months since Can-Am visited the Figure 8, but that’s just what we did in this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. Nine drivers headed to tech, racing in the 4-on/5-off format, running the outside lanes first followed by the inside, all over eighteen heats.

The mostly Can-Am 9 Car Field:

It was clear after his first heat that Noah Ball was going to run away with this one as he was posting high lap totals and the fastest times. Meanwhile, three drivers were in a close race for the remaining two podium positions.

By the move to the inside lanes, Noah had 232 laps, good for a seventeen-lap lead over Nick Ball and Dave Panich who were tied for second with 215 laps each. Ray Lee was just one lap back of the second-place tie. With 200 laps, Richard Payne was in fifth with Mike from Ohio hot on his heels at 199 laps. Joe Yates and Rolly Lapierre Jr. were running even at 194 laps while Steven Sacchetti closed out the field.

After the move to the inside lanes Noah continued to drive away from everyone else, while Ray came alive and moved up as Dave got stuck in yellow (literally) and fell off the pace. When time ran out, Noah took the win by 33 laps with Ray edging Nick for second by six track sections. Dave finished one lap behind Nick in fourth. Richard held on to fifth as Mike faded and Joe settled into a rhythm to move up to sixth.

Noah posted the fastest lap of the night with a 2.914 on black while Ray and Nick both posted identical second-fastest times of 3.015.

     Body: McLaren M7 by Parma, DDS or Kelly

     Gearing: 10:27 or 9:25

General Race Event Procedures and Schedule:

Track will be open for practice on Friday afternoon for practice at 1:00 pm.

Track opens Saturday morning at 8:00 am.

Entry fees for each class will be collected at tech, cash only please.

Entry fee for each class is $15 plus $20 pit pass for race day.

Tech for Can-Am opens at 9:30 am.

Tech will open for F-1 one hour after conclusion of the Can-Am race.

Points will be awarded for both NERR and RETRO East Series.

Tire NOTE: Parma Black Magic tires are not permitted at PJ Raceway.

I am looking for a way to get new people in my door, and I think it could help all of us. 

So, if a bunch of us track owners all have a 'open' house event on the same weekend we could sell it to the news stations as a national event which should buy us a louder voice. Think about it, if from coast to coast on a given weekend raceways and club have an 'open' house. Maybe some free track time. Maybe asking for donations to help a local cause. Have some of your racers show up to talk to people. Here we have two HO clubs, a oval track club, and my Retro races and flexi car races and we all want more people but how do they find us? Plus what is a slot car anyways?

I'm a little crazy but I am willing to give up a weekend or most of it to get more people in the door.

So I started out by setting up some design criteria:

1. Both cars appear to share the same 3 ¾” wheelbase and ¾” guide lead.

2. I would use a Mabuchi 16D with the rear axle carrier clipped to the can drive and the front end would be screwed to the front of the endbell … just like the original.

3. The chassis would be as minimalist as possible … just like the original.

I started with the motor first and was able to procedure both a 16D can and endbell with hardware from Professor motor. I drilled the can with my 16D drill jig and painted it a tangerine orange that I think matches the original color perfectly. Martin had gifted me some vintage Classic stickers that complete the look.

I was thinking of procuring a vintage 16D arm but realized I had a balanced Pro Slot 16D arm which fit perfectly. So in it went and I finished off with a pair of NOS 16D brushes that Rick gifted me. It looks the business and runs smooth and cool.

My custom sized gizmos cost almost nothing and take very little time.

I'll bet you can find some used JK 3/32  X .400 plastic hubs for nothing.

First, narrow the hubs on your truer as desired and sand off the flash nubs.

The washers are a perfect snug fit, trim and true quickly, precisely, and can easily be re-used.

I did two at a time today, worked perfect.

Jig wheel math:

Desired clearance .039" X 2 = .078

Desired wheel OD .680 - .078 = .602"

Too many racers have conflicts and can't attend.

Stock Cars on the American Royal was the featured race in this week’s edition of  the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series. Nine racers ran in the 4-on/5-off format, hitting the outside four lanes first then heading to the inside four, all over eighteen heats.

Nine Stock Cars in Tech:

Ray Lee had the fastest car on the track with Rob Hayes fractionally slower and the pair easily pulled away from the rest of the field. By the move to the inside lanes, Rob had a two-lap lead on Ray with Woody Hazelwood running in third, six laps in arrears at 168 laps. Dave Panich and Cody Pare’ were four laps behind Woody and tied for fourth. Rick Pare’ was fifth with 153 laps while John Mills led Richard Payne by two, 149 to 147. Steven Sacchetti closed out the field with 144 laps.

The race to the checkered flag saw Rob drive to victory over Ray by just under two laps.  Woody hung on to third, thirteen laps out of second while the tie between Cody and Dave went Dave’s way. The rest of the field finished in the same order as at the halfway point, with the closest finish between John and Richard who were also separated by less than two laps.

Ray posted the fastest lap of the night; a blistering 3.790 on the blue lane. Both he and Rob set lap times well below the existing NERR record of 3.855. Though not records, Woody and Cody also posted sub 4-second laps. The blue lane was the fast way around the Royal, as six of the nine racers set their fastest lap on blue.

In addition, though not official, Rob and Ray also broke Ray’s existing NERR record for total laps (346/1).
