You would think that Cox would at least used a promo body and have one of there expert model makers give it a nicer finish.

The Cox sticker next to the "Do not remove and date" in the back make's me think that someone was thinking about collectability

P whats the story here?

This or a similar car has been given some credence as coming from Cox.   It sure looks like you could make a copy of this car pretty easy and add the printed paper to make it look genuine.    If somebdody gives $4k for it, I may make one

Matt, you could not make a car that crappy. Maybe you could farm it out to a 10-year old? :laugh2:

Got this from the seller.

"I purchased it from Richard McMahon (Detroit area) in 2016... Rich had purchased it from his friend Philippe De Lespinay. Philippe runs the Los Angles Slot Car Museum. This is what Philippe published on Slotblog when asked about the car: “This car is only one of several pre-production Galaxies, in fact besides the original car featuring a Toronado body, there were several more in my possession.”... I would be happy to put you in touch with Rich... he may have more info."

Just to be clear. You are saying If this is from 1966 it would have to be a one off test shot from AMT?

Or are you saying it is more likely this Cox car was made after 1986?

If the car is genuine, Philippe may remember details of the car he sold.     Rich M is a pretty straight guy as far as I remember.    Given that it is real, what is it really worth?   $300-$500?     People see it and you say it's  a special prototype build and they say, yeah, how can you prove it?     It's got a sticker that says it's real.   Not much proof.

I'm not sure that this stuff brings big money anymore.        Kind of like musical chairs, somebody will be the last buyer at a high price and they will be left without a buyer when they try to get back their investment.

The day after that 2E kit sold, the buyer bought a loose boxed kit from me for a lot of $$$$.   I sold a mint, sealed kit last year for less than that loose kit sold for 20 years ago,    The 12K buyer bragged to me that the MIB kit was a good investment.   At that time you could see bid history on Ebay.   I eventually pointed out to him that of all the Ebayers in the world, he thought the kit was worth more than anyone else.   He and another bidder were the only ones to bid over $8K.   So much for an "investment".

What do you want for 4K+tax+ shipping?

Maybe proof showing how and when it was found?

Here is a little background from 2016.

Since this is a 66 and was released in 66 by Cox it would have had to been made from the very first issue of the AMT 66.   Whatever color that would have been.   We may be able to find that kit on the internet and see what color it was molded in.   With the crinkling of the paint on the roof, I figured this is a painted car.  It looks like red oxide primer to me.

Well that pretty much validates that it's real. Or that the current seller is a master forger. The wear on the decals is identical.

Matt, Phil,

Chris petty much covered this. If you look at the bumpers on this car. it is red. AMT body made after 1986ish

when AMT twitched to red moldings.

Which indicates a fake made sometime after and sold to this 1st owner sometime after 1986, then resold to this seller in 2016.

Big question where would Cox( in1966) get a red molded body and parts?

Can anybody explain this?

Hey guys,

You all can think what you want, it is at this moment still a free country, but...

I have known Joel for 25 years, and he is a good guy and there is no way he faked this car, so please stop with that.  He bought the car from Rich who I have known for 25 years, and he is a good guy and there is no way he faked this car, so please stop with that.  Rich got the car from Philippe who I have known for 25 years, and Rich has known him for longer.  We all know that Philippe worked at Cox in the early '70s, and it is highly likely he did find the car in a closet.  My own opinion is that the word "prototype" is used here incorrectly.  I can absolutely believe that Cox leaders asked the model shop guys to mock up some examples as they wanted to do a stock car.  Maybe they envisioned Dan Gurney, maybe not, hence the one that used a Toronado body.  I have seen arguments years ago that the model shop guys were pros and would have made WAY better.  If Cox leaders said to just mock up some ideas because we need to move, they would have thrown things together.  Can totally see this happening.  I personally believe the car is from that time, but more of a "proof of concept", not a "prototype" that actual production tooling would be created from, hence the AMT Turnpike interior.  That's what I believe.

Oh, and for anyone that thinks Cox wouldn't have taken a body from AMT to do a mock up, I have spoken with guys who worked at AMT and MPC and they absolutely spoke, and played, and...

For what it's worth,

Brad

I am not saying or even suggesting P, Joel or Rich faked this car.

What I still want to know is this,Big question where would Cox( in1966) get a red molded body and parts IF they where not molded in red until 1986?

Can anybody explain this?
