I haven't messed with HO literally in decades and know nothing about what is currently available. This is a two-part question. Thanks in advance for any advice you can relate.

One of my best man's sons wants to get his eight-year old grandson a small HO set for Christmas.

First part, what brand of HO set should he be seeking? I know some of the brands are better quality than others.

Second part, are there any national chains that are stocking HO sets this year? My friend is a grumpy old fart who really hates to buy stuff online. He likes to put his hands on things. (I told him he'd better work on getting over that preference real soon!)

Again, TIA for any advice proffered.

Don't know about brands but Walmart shows boatloads of HO scale sets.

I'd be surprised if Hobby Lobby didn't have something, too.

Auto World is a good brand just don't force the track. If you want fast, go with AFX but I don't think an eight-year old needs an AFX track.

Hobby Lobby sells Auto World sets.

I would head right over to a Hobby Lobby if you have one. They really do make some pretty cool sets and from what I understand Auto World track will connect right to AFX track and the power packs are adjustable three different voltage settings. beginner to pro! Check them out.. .

One of the biggest drawbacks to HO is the rail/pick-up shoe. The rails oxidize and you have to clean them almost every time you want to use it. It gets old fast.

I suggest looking at the Carrera "GO" sets which are 1:43 and use braid. They are sold by Target, Walmart, and Hobby Lobby. I just don't know what they may stock and what may need to be ordered for pick up in store.

AFX is stronger, faster, better. IMO. A bit more durable, faster, but more fun.

Autoworld is good also, but I would go Magnatraction with Autoworld. T-Jets can be a bit boring and harder to drive for some kids.

As far as where to buy, any hobby shops in the area?

If Hobby Lobby don't forget to download their 40% off coupon from their website...

Guys, you're forgetting that this friend refuses to order anything online. Says he's never done so and doesn't plan to start.

I think he's nuts (and have told him so), but that's his choice.

Is he located near any commercial slot car tracks? If so, maybe they could order one in.

If he just wants to go buy something that's on the shelf, Hobby Lobby or another major hobby chain may be the best bet. Target lists some slot car sets, but you never know what is in stock and what's "online only."

"The first mail order catalog was distributed in 1872 by Aaron Montgomery Ward selling goods primarily to rural farmers who had difficulty making it out to the big cities for commerce."

Would he compromise by calling by phone and giving a credit card number or maybe sending a money order?

Pablo, my friend says he's one of those guys who likes to put his hand on products before he buys them.

And he won't compromise. I hear ya.

The world is changing fast. My (adult) son was here for a visit and he connected his phone to my TV, we watched videos

Only one commercial raceway in Georgia right now and they're not stocking other the the 1/24 stuff they race AFAIK.

My friend visited Target, Walmart, and Hobby Lobby over the last couple of days. the first two stock no slot car sets at all. He found a couple of Autoworld HO sets at Hobby Lobby and I believe he's going to buy one of them, even though he nows about your concerns about HO.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Start with an AFX set, it's the best quality. Better controllers, an industry exclusive adjustable power supply, and more different track pieces available to expand when the time comes. Save the super fast AFX cars for the future.

Go to Hobby Lobby or your local outlet and buy either Thunderjet or X Traction Auto World cars. Both have traction magnets now so the kids won't get frustrated. The cars are plentiful in choice and service parts are easily obtained.

Good luck, and... Enjoy!

I started a thread about cleaning my routed HO track rails as I was struggling to get good contact. Cleaning the rails with WD-40 was suggested and I was leery of using it because of the plastic track surface. But I eventually did and now I swear by it. I've tried everything and nothing works better IMHO. In fact nothing else worked very well at all.
