I for one am glad to see some new retro bodies approved by IRRA. even if many seem to be rehashes of bodies that have been legal for some time. I just painted these two OLEG bodies and hope to try them out soon.

What new bodies would you like to see?

For me it would be a new version of the McKee So-Cal special for Can-Am, a good Lotus 49 For F1, and good versions of Ford and Chevy for Stock Car.

Not sure where that So-Cal Special name in post 1 came from but looking it up does not work. The McKee Mk 10 is the car I was referring to.

The mind is not what it once was, and it never was that good anyway.  :)

Thanks, Jeff.

Lovely paint work Eddie! And I too would love to see a nice Lotus 49 F1 body (both for IRRA racing and an original Jim Clark version).

The Mk10 was the wedge shaped car.

mckeemkviiwedge.JPG

The Mk14 was the Cro-Sal car. It had an air brake above the air box, clearly shown in this picture.

mckeemk14.JPG

The Mk14 was originally painted white, but now sports a yellow paint job. Ralph Thorn sells a Mk14 body. The Toy Tech side views Jeff shows is the Mk10, mostly campained by the Mecom team in their blue with white nose color scheme. The Smothers Brothers also ran this car.

The Mk14 used this Gene Crowe built twin turbo Oldsmobile 455.

But the Mk14 was never raced. Unless you count a qualifying run.

The Mk14 made it's only appearance at Road America in 1969. It did not start the race, but that doesn't mean it can't be modeled. Ralph Salyer was the money behind the project, and with only a few other contributors, the money ran out. Next time I see Bob, I want to ask if the engine was the same one run in the Mk10. It was a twin turbocharged Olds 455. The four wheel drive system of the MK14, which also had an automatic transmission, was pretty complicated. Bob was the first to build a transaxle that could handle the high horsepower of the American V-8s, which he first used on his Chevette Can-Am cars. It was built around the Borg-Warner T-10 four speed. Later he added a section that made it a five speed box. Bob McKee did some incredible engineering in the early days of Can-Am, plus also built some open wheel formula cars.

One other detail about the abbreviated career of the Mk14 is that Oldsmobile brass were told in no uncertain terms (by corporate GM) that they needed to pull the plug an any racing activities.

Officially, that is true. John Beltz was informed by GM brass that Chevrolet would be GMs "racing" division, so Olds backed out. But there just wasn't any money to continue development of the four wheel drive/auto trans system. It seriously lacked braking assistance. As for corporate involvement, all of the big three continued support of auto racing long after their official exit from the sport through "clandestine" departments.

I believe the tub and body were steel which made it way over weight.
