A few years ago while working on the Genie restorations with Joe Sr, I asked him if he knew of the slot cars that modeled his designs.  Joe Sr. was not aware of his creations in slot car form until I showed him my Revell Genie.

I was lucky enough to find the somewhat rare instructions which give him credit for the design.

When Joe saw the car, without hesitation he knew who had sold it to "That's Don Westers car," he said.

Please share any Huffaker memories, stories, or cars you may have in your collection. I will pass this on to his family at some point.

Thanks Joe, RIP.

Sorry, no stories of that type Martin, but what was Huffaker's connection with the Porsche-Porsche Indy car?

Joe Sr. designed and built the chassis, but with some intuition he would know it would not be successful. Customers rarely know what is best :)

Albert Stein hired Joe Huffaker to assemble a suitable chassis for the engines, and crabbed a pair of transmissions from Lancia’s racing division, giving him the basis for his assault the following spring of 1966. It did not qualify.

I had one of the Lancer Offy bodies in metallic blue during the mid-60s. If it's not around here, it's still at my parent's former Maine home.

That would be great to retrieve it, Bill.

Do not have a blue one, but I have these and they need to be built at some point?

Just saw a couple of these bodies on eBay and missed out on the auction.

I was wondering what the bodies were, so good timing!

This I think this is the car Lancer modeled. Front looks correct, but the rear cowling is different. More like this one (small pic). I guess the rear cowling is just missing in the bigger pic.

Martin,as I have told you before, the genie corvair has been a MAJOR , MAJOR inspiration in my pursuit of automotive engineering , design and, believe it or not, metallurgy. If you could be so kind as to convey this to him........

I hope that he can revel in the fact that he inspired someone that much!

Can't add anything to the post other than to say I've got 80% of a Revell Genie and if anyone has an extra pair of rear Halibrand wheels and knock offs I'm a buyer for them.

Small detail Mark S, the knock-offs are open in the rear and closed in the front. Like the pic in post 1.

For some time I thought they were mistakenly mismatched but that's the way they were sold, i believe. all I have seen are like that BTW, and there is a reason for this.

How about that... just checked my Revell Ford GT and it's the same. So, what's the reason Martin?

Same thing on the Cox Team Modified cars: the fronts are knock-offs and the rears are just nuts. When I received an almost new built-up model from England, I saw that detail and thought it had to be wrong. Luckily, I checked the instruction sheet before complaining, and that's how they're designed. Not too sure why that would be either.

I'm going to stick my two cents in here. When I look at the photo in #11 the axles appear to be one with "long" threads, and one with "stub" threads. My guess is the stub thread axle and smooth bore wheels would provide independent rotating front tires.

Edit: Ah ha the description on the side of the box says "independent rotating front tires".

Good point O&G!

That's probably it, but it seems Revell could have just used a front axle with shorter threads to block the knock offs - I think at least one other manufacturer did it that way; Cox did too, but with machined axles and 2-56 threads and nuts...

That's it guys :good:  Once you tighten the knockoffs onto the axle with short threads it gives a fixed distance to allow the front wheels to spin freely.

Cox does it with acorn nuts, AMT and Dynamic do it with the knockoff bottoming out on the axle shank to give a similar fixed distance.

The rear knock offs is open to accommodate for stacked tolerances and still clamp down tight on the drive wheels.

Thinking of Joe Sr. as I watch this video of the Genie MK 5 # 88 I did the fab, body mounting etc on. I numbered it 88 as when I weighed the frame after all the fab was done, it weighed 88 pounds.

Martin, I built two of these slot cars using Lancer bodies.

One slot car was given to Tom, the engine machinist for the real car.  Tom also has a few pieces of the Indy car.  He also did the machine work on my 911 engine.

The slot car is powered with two five pole 16D motors.  The Indy car was powered with two Porsche 911 engines.

Love it when slot cars and the real thing have a connection. Not too many pics of the Porsche Porsche Indy car.

But did find this one of the car in action on track.

How did your car handle BTW ?

Great car Rod!

Are those the original Aristo-Craft motors, or did you rewind them? I've tried a couple of the stock ones and they're not fast!

Don, original motors and not very fast.  Martin, the car drives nice.  Urethane tires were needed.

Joe Huffaker Obituary

Joe W. Huffaker
1927 - 2022
Joe Huffaker, an icon of the sports car racing world since the 1960s, passed away peacefully in his Novato home, surrounded by family, on February 25, 2022. He was 95 years old. Born on February 4, 1927, in Terre Haute, Indiana, at age 17 Joe built a roadster street car out of various donor cars from junkyards and drove it to California in 1944. In 1945 he enrolled in Marin Junior College (now College of Marin) where he received an education and met the love of his life, Jean Johannsen.
Joe found a job as a welder at Al Stein's shop building midget race cars, where he learned a good deal about building cars, which he would put to good use a few years later. Joe was also a true talent behind the wheel of a race car having entered a few races known as "Harry Hotcake" back in those early days. He built his first sports car in 1953, the Huffaker Marston Special, which was followed by the more sophisticated Huffaker Knoop Special in 1956. His career took a major step forward when he teamed up with British Car Importer, Kjell Qvale, to form the BMC Competition Department in San Francisco. The Huffaker Formula Junior and Genie Sports Racers were two very successful designs that came from this shop. During this period, he was considered the largest race car manufacturer in the United States.
In 1963 Joe designed and built three cars which all qualified for the big show at the Indianapolis 500, the Liquid Suspension Specials. He was the first and youngest man to do so. Joe ran his business, Huffaker Engineering, for more than 55 years in various locations between Marin and Sonoma Counties, but most prominently at Sonoma Raceway (a.k.a. Sears Point). Throughout the years his cars have won numerous Sports Car Club of America, International Motorsports Association and Trans Am championships, plus winning countless individual races throughout the U.S.
Today, many of Joe's cars have been restored and continue to race at historic car races in the United States, Europe, Canada, and beyond. Joe won many awards for his talent including being inducted to the Infineon Raceway (now Sonoma Raceway) Wall of Fame in 2007 and the Sports Car Club of America Hall of Fame in 2017. When not involved with his business Joe enjoyed playing golf and shot a hole in one in his very first golf match! He continued playing and over the years would regularly shoot his age.
Joe's greatest joy was his family, to whom he left a lifetime of loving memories. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Jean (Johannsen) Huffaker, whom he married in Larkspur, California on August 20, 1949, and remained inseparable. He is also survived by his three children, Susan Huffaker (Kris) Mellon, Joe (Leslie) Huffaker, and Lynn Huffaker. Joe is also survived by three grandchildren: Rebecca (Shippert), Joe T. Huffaker, and Holly (Solari); and six great-grandchildren: Jay and Ellie (Huffaker), Noah and Lucas (Shippert) and Quinn and Chloe (Solari). Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Fred Huffaker and Rhoda Ann Baker Huffaker.
A celebration of Joe's life will be announced at a future date. Donations may be directed to Guide Dogs for the Blind, or any charity of your choice.
