The restoration on the chassis number 3 car is so good because it was done at the Huffaker shops. (according to Bill Watkins) This would have been somewhere around 1990. The car was originally driven by Dan Gurney, and entered by Kjell Qvale himself. It ran in several USRRC and SCCA regional races with several other drivers. It ended up in Wisconsin, with someone who wanted a crazy car to drive around in. He made all the body modifications visable in the pictures. Bill watkins bought it, took it to Huffaker and told them to "Make it right". He ran it in several vintage events, and had the same problems with the BMC transaxle I did. We approached Chuck Haines about getting a couple of Hewland boxes as replacements. Not sure if Bill ever did.
I don't have much verifiable info on my car. What I have gathered is all word-of-mouth. It's a mongrel. Early on, Joe Huffaker Sr. not only sold complete cars, but bodies and chassis. Just as Bill Devin did, you could get a body made to several dimensions. Jim Kellison bought a chassis and body. The chassis was set up for a Corvair engine. I believe he ran it in a few SCCA races. He sold it to someone who wanted to put a small block Ford in, and cut the rear of the chassis off behind the firewall. He never finished the project. It ended up for years in a shipping container along with a disassembled Lotus 18 F Jr., and a lot of other odd parts. I rebuilt the chassis with the help of a friend who had worked as a fabricator for Ken Tyrrell on the ELF Formula 1 team. I had a little fun with it until vintage racing became too expensive.
Jim Kellison made kit cars, and also sold completed cars. Probably the most well known is the Panther J-6. In my opinion, the most beautiful of the kit cars of the 1960's.
