This poor beast looks like it was a really nice build that fell on hard times, and finally to the Buzz basement. There were a bunch of blob solder added with liberal amounts of acid that was not cleaned off. The rear axle bearings and motor were locked up solid. Amazingly, the only parts that were replcaced were the bare B-can, pinion, and rear axle ball bearings. Copious amounts of Industrial strength applied after removing the extra brackets and about of a quarter of a pound of solder blobs. I formed a can to axle tube brace instead of the four that were removed. At the end of it all it came out pretty nice.

Is this some kind of production chassis, or a one-off?

Seems to be a Champion chassis.

At least Champion parts, then customer made. IMO.

I thought for a second that it could be an AYK/ Champion/Riggen chassis, but in my opinion it has too many details like the front bat pan hinges.

Plus along with the plating looking different, too many brass pieces like the crosspiece in front of the motor.

Really nice job, Al...

I have about four Tony P. chassis found buried in Buzzys basement... They all need to be totally taken apart and rebuilt. One of them is even a Womp chassis. And I have a Team Nutley chassis as well.

I wish I had the time or patience to do it.

Parma sold a drop arm and pans like these as a set. I got a set of them in the early '70s, silver in color. Maybe plated, but I never tried scratching it off, Al.

I think your chassis was customer-built.

What I can tell you is that is not plated and a magnet will not stick to it. I took a file to an edge and there is evidence of another color. Stainless steel?

The pans and drop arm look to be stamped.

I always thought mine was SS, too and that's why I probably never built with it.

If my memory is correct, the parts were thicker, but of a lighter weight than the corresponding brass parts. I'll have to unpack mine for comparison.

Scratchbuilt. Circa very late '60s or very early '70s. Riggen wheels front and rear. Green Jet flag would point to Parma as a source of origin for it. Faas gears and 3/32" axles confirm that general era.

The person who built this definitely knew what they were doing. Good Dremel, bending, and soldering work.

Agreed on the build quality, Steve. Everything is square and symmetrical, with tight tolerances. Too bad the builder didn't sign it.

The main rails look to be smaller than .063" wire, maybe .055 or .047. That, coupled with the front axle design, would sort of indicate the chassis was built for more flex than one intended to run in heavy glue.

Correction on those wheels.  They are either Associated or Associated/Steube.

Even if you never know what it is, one thing is for sure,
It's a keeper!!!
The sanding marks can be polished out. When I was fabricating stainless steel for Cornell and various meadiries, I used to polish it to triple A, wich is suitable for pharmisutical/ injection use. You'd be surprised how easy it is to polish.

Champion as said.  But the pans and tongue came both built and as a kit.
The steel is kind of soft tho.  I had a few of them and even tried to harden the steel with heat and an oil bath but never got it quite right.
