For what it's worth: (yes, I know it's a song)

My 73 to 76 cars were geared 8/42 (or 43); I would buy 7/8" OD tires, and have them ground to 13/16".

Bob, why didn't you just buy Walt's? He was living in CT back then. Might have been $1.25-$1.50 a pair.

That was at the time when I had to run a different brand of tire. Walt had a trailer fire, and his equipment was lost.

Through the Seventies I had 12 to 15 raceways in Texas involved in the TCS running Group 7 cars.

It was not unusual to have 50 or more entries in our monthly races

AFAIK it was the most active area in the country and we were making rapid advancements at each race in chassis design and air control.

The 1974 and 1975 Nats at my raceway brought together the best from both coasts and Texas, and many of the out-of-staters were surprised at the track, the power and the abilities of the locals.

The cars at both races ran rear tires from 3/4" to 7/8" and I wasn't too picky about gear clearance on the Engleman.

I know some of you ran larger than 3/4" tires at your races, but "Nationals" rules have never been explicit "National" rules and that time frame was a reflection of that.

I recently found this pic. So (69-70) earlier  than I originally thought as you can tell by the specs on the package.

I have a couple of Tek-Cheks that I used. One I widened the 3" tire track to 3 1/8" in 1970 for wing cars,
the other was left factory stock for the weekly race class on Fri. & Sat. nights.

Thanks for all your insight and comments Bill. The tool mod makes good sense as I have never seen a 3 1/8" tech tool, has anybody?

Maybe a limited market, and lets face a caliper just the same job.

It would just be a matter of time (a few years) before the rule evolved to 3 1/4" anyway.
