Seems be a stronger selling venue than eBay. LOL.

So what do the knowledgeable collectors think of the current price?

BAT has the same problem with "snipers" that eBay has. I lost out on one item by $47, pretty close on a $30,000 car. There were 11 bids in the last 3 seconds of the auction.

It's an auction. Last second bidding is baked into the process. Sniping for some is nimble bidding for others.

Which is why I usually only do true auctions with an auctioneer. I can still bid on-line, but there is a live person to control the action.
For some people, a timed on-line auction is a game. They want to beat the machine, the system. And in that way beat any competing bidders. I have bought two cars at in-person auctions; my Austin-Healey, and a Lotus Europa. Both at Mecom events. With the Healey, a bidder tried to push through a bid just as the hammer fell. Fortunately, the auctioneer had already called sold, and my bid prevailed. On eBay, I probably would have lost that car.

Interesting stuff - hope it finds a good home.
The comments are nearly as interesting as the auction photos.

Fortunate for you, but not the seller. But, that guy wasn't trying to snipe. That doesn't work on a live auction. If that bid would have somehow snuck in there, the auctioneer would have continued the bidding.
Sniping online these days is just how it is. Whether you like or not doesn't change anything. You understand the rules of engagement, you can play the game too. Or don't play at all if you so choose.

It’s an auction… high bid wins… doesn’t matter how it gets there, that’s how an auction works.

The increase in the bid was the minimum the auctioneer allowed on this car. $100.00. At that rate, bidding would have gone on forever. The consigner knows the rules. As do the bidders. The consigner can set a reserve on the car. That is the least he will take for it. (Barrett-Jackson is the exception. All cars are submitted no reserve.) He can set the reserve at any amount. So he doesn't have to take less than he wants. I started going to collector car auctions in 1975. Have been to hundreds. That system works. It is fair and equitable for all participants. And you are right, I don't have to participate in timed on-line auctions. And I don't, as a rule. But I don't try to discourage anyone else from using the service. My comment about the sniping was only meant as a warning. But you guys want to make it sound like I am carrying out some kind of war against BAT and eBay. But not true. In fact, I won an item off eBay yesterday;

No effective way to snipe on BAT. Each bid extends the closing by 2 or 5 minutes, (I don't recall which). As long as you are on-line and actively engaged, you get the opportunity to respond to other bidders.
And please don't disparage sniping. Sniping is an art, especially when you are up against other snipers. I used to buy off Ebay quite a lot. Have not done much for a few years now.

Oh, really. Action from one lot that was scheduled to close at 4:25 PM. yesterday. The end is extended at 2 minute intervals, but not forever. I believe it is twice, and intended to allow their system to catch up for bids placed before the deadline but hadn't registered yet.

Dave, I'm not sure you understand how it works.
When the auction closes, the hold is released for all bidders who didn't win the vehicle. Sniping protection extends the auction clock by two minutes each time a bid is placed in the auction's final moments. The auction isn't over until two full minutes have elapsed since the highest bid was placed.

I understand exactly how it works. Been bidding on that forum for a few years. The last bids are held for their system to double check the credentials of the top bidders. If the winning bidder is found to be NSF, the bid is negated. And that bidder is banned from further participation in any bidding. The auction isn't extended indefinitely. If so, the bidding could go on for hours. Any bids posted after the closing date and time are not accepted.
In any event, If you had bothered to read my post #14, you would know my purpose was never to promote or condemn sniping. That said, I am not going to participate in any debate about using on-line auctions.

Where does it state that?

Well, I am glad that Dave does not want to debate, because Phil is correct.
From the BaT website, under FAQ, Common Bidder Questions
"During the last 2 minutes of BaT Auctions, the clock resets to 2 minutes after every bid. This happens until no more bids are placed and the auction ends. This gives everyone a chance to place their bids and gives sellers a chance to sell to the true high bidder."

A little higher than I was predicting, but not much.
