In 1970, chassis builders experimented with "plate cars." "Plate cars" were steel center section cars. Split pans were also tried.  The idea of split pans was to get more rear traction. 3/32" axles came into vogue.

Later, chassis design evolved back to piano wire main rails and one-piece pans.

I built this "plate chassis" split pan car with a used steel center section, along with a used Steube/Associated drop arm and side pans. I think the center section could be a Simco.

The motor is a Mura C-can motor. Magnets and magnet shims are Champion. The armature is a hand-wound 25 single wind.

Wheels are Associated with modern rear tires. The rear tires started at 7/8" diameter.

The body is an original Russkit Elfin roadster with a mylar rear spoiler. Why an Elfin body? They look cool, and the body fits this 4" wheelbase chassis nicely. Also, I found that most of the Can Am bodies I have left are for shorter wheelbase chassis.

The car is fun to drive and is at home on a blue King track.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but here's my Russkit Elfin from waaaay back in 1969.

I've alway thought it was one of the best looking slot car bodies ever.

You confirmed what I was thinking that this was 1969ish era just before McLaren bodies and the now never ending TI-22 tsunami.

:) Mmmm Nice car and 'build',.. Great Body,.. brings back many memories of a bygone Era :)

A Modern New Copy of that Body would make for a nice Retro body choice Instead of a Ti22 :)

As you say, so Many of the Later 'Pro' style bodies in that Era were ultimately designed for Slightly Under a 4" Wheelbase.

Another great car Rodney. :good:

I do like the lines of the Elfin too.

I did do do some repairs and added some white pin-striping on this green body and it fit this chassis perfectly.  I also had this magazine as a teenager and loved the paint jobs on the cover.
