The little cars we play with run on electricity, but it takes gasoline (or diesel!) to get to the raceway and the availability of fuel has been very poor in the Southeast since the recent Gulf hurrricanes. Without a doubt, this factor contributed to the relatively small turn-out at Green Flag Speedway for SERRA #7.

We still had a great day and some great racing.

Here are the results:

F1

1) Jay Guard - 250 laps, best time of 4.550 secs on blue
2) Lindsay Byron - 250, 4.609 on purple
3) Tommy Flythe - 242, 4.730 on orange
4) Greg Wells - 241, 4.719 on blue
5) Don Weaver - 227, 4.563 on purple

Can-Am

1) Jay Guard - 301 laps, best time of 4.278 secs on purple
2) Ralph Thorne - 299, 4.340 on orange
3) Tommy Flythe - 289, 4.500 on yellow
4) Joe McIntosh - 286, 4.230 on blue
5) Lindsay Byron - 282, 4.230 on purple
6) Nick DeAngelis - 270, 4.339 on purple
7) Don Weaver - 269, 4.558 on orange

Flexi GT

1) Ralph Thorne - 330 laps, best time of 3.949 secs on yellow
2) Jay Guard - 324, 4.059 on orange
3) Joe McIntosh - 308, 4.070 on yellow
4) Johnny Duncan - 293, 4.390 on yellow
5) Loren Crawford - 244, 4.277 on purple
6) Skinny McKinney - 164, 4.840 on orange

I'll get the pictures and some additional reportage posted over the next day or so.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

We really had a great day of SERRA racing at Green Flag Speedway in Pickens, SC. Although the field was a little smaller than usual the racing was very close and FUN! I especially want to thank track owner John and his wife Debbie for their hospitality and a special thanks to Jerry Richey for coming over from Anderson Speedway and doing a great job of race directing!

As you can see below the track is of an unusual configuration, in fact in over ten years of racing all over the USA I've never seen this track design before.

But here's the really interesting thing: this track is one of the best fender to fender, great places-to-pass tracks I've ever run on. It has two long straights with a tight but punchable bank (punched wasn't always the fastest way through) that really let you see who had the motor, gearing, and aero right. Then you had a fast 180 degree left-hand deadman that led to a perfect-for-passing (if you had shorter gearing!) 12 foot short chute. Next into a 180 degree right hander, then onto another 12 foot straight and finally to the 180 degree lead-on. My first impression was that this wasn't such a challenging track but this was only partially true with the very tight inside-most 180s. Nonetheless it was probably one of the best pure racing/passing tracks I've ever run on. You had the options of setting-up for the straights, the short chutes, or something in between. It was really neat to see how the different set-up strategies played out.

As I said the deadman at the end of the last straight was a pretty fast turn, as evidenced by the wind which blew this attractive spectator's skirt up. :D
