I just finished restoring this 1961 Ford Galaxie slot car. The body is a screw bottom AMT 1961 Ford Galaxie convertible with a hardtop glued on. The body also features nice hand lettering and vintage paint. The running gear is Monogram. I think the car has a cool look.
The body was found with the hood missing and the roof broken off. I glued the roof back on, filled the cracks, and touched up the paint. A re-release 1961 Ford kit was purchased for the hood. The hood on the re-release kit was non-opening and molded to the body. So, the hood was cut out of the donor body and fitted to the project car. Lacquer paint was mixed to try to match the orange body color and applied to the hood. The whole car was then clear coated. A Cox driver was added to the race car interior.
The Monogram chassis was straightened and cleaned. A Dynamic weight was added to the chassis. The long body mounting screws allow the body to roll.
The worn-out 36D Monogram motor was replaced with a French rewind. Rear tires are now urethane.
The car is great fun to drive, and handling is neutral with no tilting. The French motor supplies good linear power.
