There was an R4 Retro event. There is the Retro Palooza, The Fall Brawl, The Southern Retro Rumble, The Spring Fling, and other Retro events.

 

It is time for New England to enter the ring, but we are not fighters or heavy drinkers, but we do one of the most famous running race in the country if not the world, The Boston Marathon and it used to start in Ashland, MA. In honor of that race THE MODELVILLE HOBBY RETRO MARATHON begins a new Retro event to join those races we all know and want to race in.

 

All qualifying will be laps and sections in one minute. Ties will be broken by the fastest lap.

All races will be combined laps and sections. Races will be one and done.

 

Thursday – Open 12:00 until 9:00 or ½ hour after end of race, whichever is last.

                  IROC Race most likely on the Figure 8 with Retro cars or Trans-Am FCR.

 

Friday – Open 9:00 until 10:00 or 1/2 hour after end the race, whichever is last.

              IRRA Stock Cars on the Royal

 

Saturday – Open 7:00 until 10:00 or ½ hour after the end of the race, whichever is last.

                  Coupes – Handout motors – on the Aristocrat – followed by

                  Can-Am – On the Sovereign

                  Race schedule subject to adjustment with over 28 racers.

 

Sunday – Open 7:00 until 7:00 or ½ hour after end of the race, whichever is last.

                F1 – on the King

 

Entry fees and pit fees are being studied now.

We will be working with local hotel and sponsors for room rate deals.

We will be looking for goody bag donations and other forms of sponsorship.

You got four days of racing in three days. Something needs to be corrected.

First, Bill, we have an IROC Fun race on day one. Stock Cars on day two. Coupes and CAN-AM on day three. Plus F1 on day four. I do not see any correction needing to be made.

Looks like a four-day event to me with races scheduled on the 11th, 12th, 13th, & 14th   My traveling days to slot car races ended 42 years ago. Have a great event!

MARC-New England has an HO race at Catfish International on the Saturday of the weekend in question.

Which is also Dan Gurney's birthday!

 

However, I'll do my level best to be at Modelville on the following day, for F1.  And maybe some HO guys

in town for The Catfish will stay over, and get after it in Retro F1, too.

More racing on the King and Purple Mile, I could consider making the trip.

We are working on the pit fees and race fees. We are hoping to come up with a cheap and fun event. Yes we want to make money but we are more interested in this event being an event everyone will want to come to.

 

We have five tracks. We race retro's on four of them every week. We do not race enough on the Sovereign because of the number of people needed to handle marshalling all the corners. With that said, if all you want to race on is a king then you can go to any of the big retro events in the country and do that. I have not made it to those events but if you want to practice with one class of cars and everyone else is running an other class that does not seem like it will work too well to me. We will be running on five tracks with five different cars practice what you want when you want.

 

Ask the NERR racers about our tracks and the difference you have to over come to race on them. Ask Jimmy Williams who finished 7th in a Stock Car race on the 6th 32 laps off the leaders total. Our tracks are different which make life more fun.

 

This event is a test for 2025 when Modelville Hobby will be sixty years old, Richard Payne will have owned it for thirty five years. We are looking at 2025 race as the event to go to but we have to try something first and this is it.

The most retro place for a Premier retro event, is indisputably Modelville. Having grown up in California, I get to race on the very same Sovereign that my dad and uncle did at Playland. Then there is the always fun original Royal and the cursed 🤬 Aristocrat that I will some day figure out. and we can keep the punch bowl crew happy with the modern Gerding King. Plenty of pit space. Multiple tracks to test your skills and locals who will help with flattening the learning curve on driving and setup.

And the parts counter?!? The wall is filled with retro stuff over the decades!!


This should absolutely be added to the list of Premier events.

Being new to retro, I am lucky enough to be close to Modelville to race most Tuesday's and at NERR events there.  I like the challenge of learning the different tracks and I think the matching of classes to tracks is good mix.  I'm looking forward to this event especially to run on the Sovereign since we typically don't have enough people to marshal that track.

Pit fee each day will be $10.00. Thursdays pit fee is waived if you enter the IROC race. Sundays pit fee is waived if you enter the F-1 race.

IROC race entry fee is $20.00.

Stock Car race on Friday is $15.00.

Coupe race on Saturday is $35.00 with one hand out motor.

CAN-AM race on Saturday is $15.00.

F-1 race on Sunday is $15.00.

Doc....The Motel 6 or Redroof isn't to bad, CD and I are staying at the Holiday Inn in Milford for this race this time. Unfortunately there just isn't anything that close to the tracks location.

IROC race on Friday with Rolly Lapierre winning over Cody Pare in a feild of 11.

 

Stock cars on the Royal with a very close race from start to finish with Bob "Woody" Hazelwood beating Peter Lentros by 2 laps and Peter beating Gary Clinton Jr by 14 sections in a field of 15.

 

Coupes start Saturday with live streaming at Modelville Hobby's facebook site.

The racing started with an IROC Coupe race on the Figure 8, using KC brushless motors. Eleven drivers tried the new technology with the old man Roland Lapierre beating the young kid Cody Pare by just under one lap.

Friday night, Stock Cars saw Dave Gesner winning concours and fifteen racers trying to find out who can turn the most laps in one minute. With ten drivers turning 14 or more laps the race was on. The top four positions were held by Modelville Hobby regulars, with Rob Hayes pulling off a total of 15.11 laps to beat Dave Panich at 15.08. Gary Clinton Jr had a little problem at the beginning of his run but still qualified fifth.

Chris Davis pulled a ten-lap lead over Joe (controller hooked up wrong) Yates in the B main.

The A main drivers all qualified within nine tenths of a lap, so we knew racing was going to be close and it was. With the lead changing every heat between four drivers, but it was Woody Hazelwood at the end with 2 laps over Peter Lentros, who was 14 sections over Gary Clinton Jr.

Saturday morning, we headed to the Aristocrat for handout motors in Coupes. Dave Gesner with another one of his great detailed bodies won concours.

Thirteen drivers took their turn on the split lane track to see who got the most laps in one minute. Gary Clinton Jr had no problems qualifying this time and did 14.19 laps to Woody Hazelwood’s 14.02. The only two with 14 laps.

The B main was set 6 drivers. Bob Blanchette chased Dave Gesner but never caught him. Dave won by two laps while Roland Lapierre finished seven laps behind Bob.

After a pizza break, thanks to John Luongo. The CAN-AMs headed to the Sovereign. 220 feet of Purple Formica. Dave Gesner took Concours again. Dom Luongo and Jimmy Williams showed up, so you know qualifying would be interesting. Once everyone was done Dom Luongo got TQ. But it was not the young driver to take second as Doc Dougherty beat out Jimmy by having a 7.085 lap to Jimmy’s 7.094 both with 9 laps and 16 sections. During lane choice Jimmy seemed a little lost having not picked third for a while.

The B main came down to the young against the old. The” I raced on it as a kid” against “I raced on it once here before”. Well Ken Stevens might have gray hair but those races back in the late 60’s and early 70’s must be in there somewhere as he beat Frankie Blenkhorn by 10 sections.

Sunday, time for F-1 on the King. Fourteen drivers precented their cars for concours, and Dave Gesner made it a clean sweep of the weekend with another great paint job. The next question to answer was would anyone repeat as top qualifier. Gary Clinton Jr topped the list by a half a lap over Frankie Blenkhorn, becoming the first repeat TQ of the weekend. The top four spots included drivers from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and Texas.

There has been seven mains up to this point and no repeat winners, this is a true testament of the driver’s ability. Rob Hayes and Woody Hazelwood put on a great battle for the B main win, but Rob came out on top with 327 to Woody’s 325. So that makes it eight mains and eight winners, would that keep up.

After a medical delay we started the A main. Gary Clinton Jr and Ray Lee put on a strong battle for the lead, but Frankie Blenkhorn quietly added laps. Ray’s mid race handling issue caught Gary in the wrong place and broke his guide. That was the break Frankie need to pull into the lead and hold it for the win with 334 laps. Gary came back with fire in his eyes and beat Ray by two laps, and only two laps behind Frankie.

Frankie Blenkhorn made it nine mains and nine different winners, quite the Retro Marathon.

We had nine racers who ran all four retro races. Based on their finishes Bob “Woody” Hazelwood finished third just three points ahead of the F-1 winner Frankie Blenkhorn. One point ahead of Bob was Peter Lentros who without him Modelville Hobby would not be what it is today and yesterday. The Gold metal went to Gary Clinton Jr ten points ahead of Peter.

After the F-1 B main Peter Lentros suffered a stroke. At this time, he is stable in Tufts Medical Center in Boston. I will tell all of you, that everything happened perfectly. He had finished his racing. He went down in a crowd of great guys. I know his daughter and how to reach her. With that said the paramedics ask some simple questions: name, DOB, medical conditions, doctor’s name, and contact information. Having worked for Peter I know some of the answers but not all. So here is my question to all of you reading this, does someone you are with when you are having your worst day know the answers to most if not all of these questions. Those answers could save your life. So put a note in your wallet, slot car box, glove compartment with some useful information. Maybe check with your doctor about what you should list or ask a doctor, paramedic, or nurse, it might help some day and I hope you never need it.
