That way, you can use a cut-down guide flag, & shim it as necessary to acheive the required .062" clearance...

Which begs the question......... back in the day, was the drop arm also required to clear by .062" all the way to the front? My brain wants to think drop arms were allowed to "drop" below the .062" plane(?).

And THANKS for that other info, Jeff! :D

:D In the sixties most tech inspectors used a piece of .063 piano wire under the whole chassis from one end to the other so yes the drop arm did have to clear.

Jeff,

Beautiful job, man!! I love how that looks and the way you copied the one piece wrap around rail, super nice!! A fitting tribute to the man who showed Mr. Mike how to build. I did the 1-2-1 rail version of a Billy chassis awhile back, I think Pablo did too. That guy was quite the builder.

You West Coast Jaildoor builders are taking over!!

See ya!

Drop arms had to clear... Front wheels had to touch.

We originally had an Engleman at Nutley and lots on the east coast. They all had tape which was above the surface. We would build the chassis flat and set the up-stop for the drop arm on the track itself. It would sit at .063 when tech'ed but could move up slightly to make up the tape hight on the track. Things like super thin guide shims teflon washers etc were not available then. Honestly setting up the guide was not as intense than as it is now. We just ddi not know.... I dont remember ever going to a track and resetting the guide...

Actually I can't even remember doing that in the early 1970's... :laugh2:
Did not seem to matter much then...

:D I don't remember ever checking the guide height either---maybe thats why a car would be awesome on one track and trash on another one.????

I know what you mean, Oscar. It's heck when I put the front wheels on pointed backwards!

Hi, Dokk ! :) ... Thanks ! ...

If the guy running the local model train store wasn't such a ill-tempered jerk, I'd have checked on his supply of Marklin train wire! :laugh2:

Take care, Dokk !

Jeff, thanks for the tribute to Billy. :D Super build, dude.

My pleasure, Mike... ;)

Listening to you talk about your brother, it's obvious how much knowing him meant to you, while growing up...

I intend to describe the main feature of this chassis as "the Steube loop"... A fitting description, IMHO...

Take care, Mr. Froggenheimer... ;) ... Catch you at the track, Judge! :laugh2:

Track-testing on the MTT "flat track" & the Gearding King confirms... it's runs great!... ;) ... Easy to drive, & very predictable...

Looking forward to our next Jaildoor demo, during the Convention ...

Thanks, everyone! ... & good racing !! ;)

Great looking car Jeff, I like it!!! I ordered a few of
those TSRF low power motors ;) from Electric Dreams. I going
to test them in my 4 rail this wednesday. I hope the
Handling comes around. The car is a handful on the
Hillclimb track with a Falcon VII.

Dale,
These motors have zero armature timing but generally run best at opposite direction to that indicated on the sticker's arrow. Just for your info and benefit. :)

8-29, 9-28 and "everything in between". Must be a 8-1/2 to 28/29, eh? Last I heard Lee Hines had the 28-1/2 wire; wonder if he's got the 8-1/2 pinions?

Only people unable to set a proper gear mesh use 8-1/2-tooth pinions. But these are mutant from either 8 or 9-tooth jobs...

I must say, Dokk, I'm quite impressed with your latest avatar. "A Touch of Class". I mean, a talking dog drinking a martini in heart boxer shorts; kinda puts things in perspective. We are kindred spirits.

Well, here's what I've been workin' on, lately....

4_jaildoors___1.JPG

4_jaildoors___2.JPG

Two people who I've known forever ( identity kept secret, to insure they won't get harassed by chassis-hungry thieves...) specifically requested that I build them two ( 2 ) jaildoor chassis, EACH !!

:shok:

So, I sat at my workbench, & built these...

I did learn a few interesting things about building, too....

1) If you want the phone to ring, apply soldering acid to ANY part of the chassis, & it'll ring...

2) 5th-grade homework becomes interesting only if you're forced to "help" someone...

&

3) Building chassis is still a better way to entertain yourself, rather than watch the one-eyed liar...

Take care, everyone.... & good racing :good:
