I saw a post on here that mentioned the Bicentennial Race held in 1976. I dug out some stuff that might be of interest to some of you old farts. I hope it is legible.

Bicent_Race.jpg
This is the box sticker, and the last one that I have. The actual size is 1"x2".

And the flyer:

I like the rules, they can't get much simpler.

I hope this brings back some pleasant(?) memories :D .

Once upon a time there was a scan of "Somebody's Got To Eat It" Bicentennial Race Edition here on Slotblog.

Not sure what happened to it?

I don't care as much about "credit" as I do care that people are able to read the Slot History.

Keith, thanks for posting the link to the race report. I never saw it before. Were there any other versions by a different writer? I wasn't there. My local track owner at the time went, and managed to fry every motor he had!

I was there also and took several pictures for Joel's Thrash-O-Gram! I still have a mint copy of it that Joel sent me after the race. If I can figure out how to scan and post, I will. It is neat and he did an excellent job. It has all the results!

It was my first and only nats to date! I am waiting for the NEXT Bicentennial Race! Heck, I waited 200 years for the first one!!!

Steve, any local print shop should be able to scan your Thrash-O-Gram, and burn it to a CD or flash drive. If you have any questions, please PM me. I have the last T-O-G put out before the race, but I've never seen the one that came out after.

Mike,

I am presently in Africa on work assignment but will return to USA in May. I will scan and just hit the "insert image" button??? The picture on the front was "The Stork" waving his controller at the moment he won!!! I remember it well as I positioned myself to capture the MOMENT for the champion. Like Bob, it was memorable for me although I STUNK!!! Never made it out of the semis! BUT what a show. Up to that point, I had never seen motor changes like that!!! WOW! Normal now but then...exciting!

Yes; as I recall, the winner of the Pro main won $1001.00 (which is why if you look closely at the photo there is a Bicentennial Silver Dollar on top of the stack of 2's).

Yesterday night, Bob Crane showed me the chassis with which he won the Bicentennial. I was quite happy to see such a glorious piece of slot car history, and hope that Bob will consider donating the chassis to the LASCM, so that we could restore it with the proper component and give it the recognition it deserves.

I remember that day very well, July 4th 1976 was the first time I got busted and spent the day in jail...1976 was a glorious day for this democracy of hypocrisy, and fortunately the Stork was sticken it to the man and racing slot cars and winning, this 1st place winning car is priceless and the LASCM should cough up megabucks for the Stork to even consider given it up.

I still have the Silver Dollar. As far as the stack of cash. It was "500" brand new $ 2.00 Bills.

Thanks a lot for the help, you, ex-convict! :laugh2:

It will be of course for Bob to decide what he wants to do with it. The LASCM would love to have it but the budget is no longer what it used to be to acquire new artifacts. Call it "recession" or whatever you want...

Thing is, if he donates the chassis because that is all that survived, there is a great chance for the car to be restored as a complete car, with the proper Bill Steube motor because the LASCM has a few (thanks to other nice gentlemen who donated some, like Joe "Chevy" Cormier), correct body with exacting replica paint etc. I don't think that it can be done anywhere else and we have a good track record to make them look nice... like this one, donated by Howie Ursaner:

ursaner-lola-1.jpg

That 1966 Bob Emott-built car needed a LOT of work but is now a star of the LASCM. smile.gif
