Friday night I went racing for the second time in my whole life.

Those of you RACERS out there can move on to another more interesting thread because this is not really about Jairus bashing, Knife fights in a phone booth or trash talking.

Instead, I believed that to build better RTRs I should get some actual racing and prep under my belt. Thus the following short story...

I wanted to go racing.
Depoe Bay Raceway holds three races, one each week, on a rotating basis. Super Trucks, Eurosport, and Flexi Wing cars. I choose the latter because it was easy and cheap... or so I thought.

The night started interestingly enough. Located on the coast less than 100 yards from the pounding Pacific surf is Depoe Bay Raceway. The racers as they showed up were surprised to see two new entries. Jeremy, my son-in-law, myself, and my son, who was really there just to shag cars if the need should arise. Which it really did... but I am getting ahead of myself.
There were only four of them... Jeff with his girlfriend, Carrie, Jim, and Kim with his cardboard slot box. They sized us up fairly quickly as total newbies and therefore little competition... but, just as bugs to be squashed. However, I have to say that we were treated courteously as they introducing themselves and track rules were explained.

All four had been racing at Depoe Bay for quite some time and knew the rules and so with no ceremony... started qualifying with surprisingly NO tech inspection!

Jeremy and I qualified last, lanes were chosen and we began.
Six of us with 2 minute heats, 1 minute between for lane changes. Took less than an hour for one race and I was exhausted after it was over!

You guys think Buena Park has its crash fests? You ain't seen nothing when those four are involved!
They never really RACED with Jeremy and me but only humored us! Although Jeff gave us the Stinkeye most of the time for driving "blocker" cars while he pasted a huge target on Jimmy's car the whole race! There were cars flying all over the freaking place and at least four times someone had to cry that his car was on the floor. It was total chaos!
I cried "Track" one time when nearly every lane was blocked, but with Mark and Ken as the only marshals - there was nobody on the switch. Plus.. the other racers just looked at me like I was stupidly asking where the freaking hell WAS THE TRACK LOCATED!?!?!?
Sigh...
I just tried to get as many laps as possible each heat and that was all. Survive was the goal and I managed to stay out of nearly all the maelstrom of wrecks that cropped up that night.

The rules as they were explained to me were:
Flexi chassis... any type or make.
Some modifications are allowed and they let one guy really modify his chassis for one race but he disappeared after winning.
Motors are Parma Super 16D, Parma Rotor, Pro Slot 2105 (Chinese arm) and Pro Slot 2105. (American arm).
Bodies any and wings/side fences allowed with spoiler and diaplane.
Tires... any.
Guide... any.
Driver... what driver? ;)

As you can figure... there are very few rules and Jeremy and I were handed our asses in a nice pretty pink basket because we ran the race with Parma Super 16s unmodified while all the other contestants ran the ProSlot S16D with the American Arm. Later I learned that Jimmy pulls these motors apart after getting them and blueprints everything and zaps the magnets before reassembly. Those cars ran nearly as fast as any laser cut strap motor equipped wing car with the top lap time of 4 seconds flat! :shok:

Talking to Jimmy after the race (the rest of the field left within three minutes of the power going off...) and learned that he was the motor builder for the all the racers. Very little rules regarding sealed tape; none, magnets; zap away, polishing of arms; okay with Jimmy, chassis modifications; he didn't answer... but his car went right into his HUGE slot box that had its own freaking zip code about just as quickly as the rest of the racers found the parking lot!!!

Suffice it to say that this is not just for fun with these guys!

The gloves are now off!

Have I become a racer?
Only time will tell... stay tuned.

PS: YouTube video of one heat here!

By the way... this is my body.
Felt that a pure wing car body was stupid and I wanted a real driver figure and some decent graphics. So with a nod to Philippe... I choose this:

How do people race sitting down? I have never figured that out. I can't make myself do it, I have to be standing even to practice.

Oh, I raced the best on our old American Monarch. Those stools close to the back wall. Kick back, prop up a knee and enjoy the competiton. :)

Those days are long gone, I miss those color-coded stools

The reason they sit in their chairs is because they are really good racers they never get out of their slots. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: Checking out the video they must be good as they had only two marshalls.
They are good. ;)

Those guys are going to make Jairus a hell of good racer. :shok:

I hope they are not eating burgers and fries at the same time. I have to say that Jairus is doing the right thing; he builds beautiful cars and he wants to join the racing circuit, that means I will meet him and his son in law at BPR and that's great.

Jairus, come on down to race it will be fun. ;)

First thing I did was move my stool to the back wall! I too was suprised that most of the racers sat down..

I tried to take the Mike Steube approach of standing with the controller in both hands and ignore all that went on around me.
Which was one reason I painted my car with flourescent yellow and white. Good color as nobody else had anything like it! Never lost my car but it did flip into another slot and the driver drove it over his counter... lost one lap that heat while giving him an extra lap.

One other instance I moved to the wrong lane for a whole heat and managed to received no laps counted! Crap!!! (With only six racers that is possible).

The man in charge gave me the chance to double the total of my next heat to make up for it and of course I got involved in a huge wreck which cost a lot of time... and my total for that heat sucked!

All in all, learned a mountain of information.

Nesta, you can bet that I will be back down to BPR soon for a nice hot race on the King!!! Oh, yeah! :D

Jairus, fight fire with fire if you go back to race again. Next time have a legitimate wing body with you and get a blueprinted 502 motor if that's what they're running. Both could make a world of difference in your results.

That's a nice track judging by the video. But in my 42 years of commercial racing I've never seen the racers sitting down during a race. :laugh2: Standing up is a definite advantage.

I'm not sure what track management software was being used but most of them for commercial applications allow the track owner to set a minimum lap read time so "riders" don't get counted. Most of them also allow the track owner to add a missed lap by pushing the 1-8 keys depending upon which lane needs the lap. Some racing organizations (ISRA comes to mind) don't add missed laps back in according to their rules. So when you're running under such rules, if you miss a lap, always holler to the marshall to put your car behind the lap counter.

I'd say several if not most of the guys didn't use the stools back in the day. We had deluxe decorating and carpet, unlike most dirty tracks being an American franchise. I figured the stools were there for a reason. I do have fast lap record and number of laps record on black lane with 1/32 scale Womps, all sitting on my a**.

There has been some discussion about handicap provisions for tracks. Some in a joking way, but not out of the picture. If you had to roll up to a driver's station in a wheelchair, would these already-old guys be able to race 10-15 years from now? Turn marshalling would have to be dealt with. I race mostly crash and burn anyway. :)

Bill, I plan to with regard to the chassis and motor. But the body will remain the same as what I started with. Frankly I don't see the shape of the body having much effect on the performance once those high fences go up. One of the guys had his body crooked and another over an 1/8" of an inch gap all around the bottom!

We have a guy in a wheelchair that races with us. The track made up a long cord for him to hook his controller up to. He stays in the same place and someone changes the other end of the long cord to the next lane for him. It works pretty well and he has a blast.

Most of the time someone volunteers to marshal for his turn and he sits next to the donut and grabs cars that come to the outside that he can reach. He has a blast and loves slot racing of all types. He hardly ever finishes all that great but he does it with the biggest smile you have ever seen in your life.

If you can use a 3/32" axle, try 72 pitch gears 10/43, and put a bearing in the can.
Get rid of the front wheels; this is not retro - paint wheels on the body.

Oh, use a Champion Turbo-Flex.

Good luck. I like wing flexi.

Currently running 3/32" axle, 64 pitch, and 10/37 with an unmodified (so far) Parma Super 16D. Front wheels don't touch so that is a wash. Turbo Flex is what I have but switching to an aluminum pan to "lighten the load" some.

Also going to do some experiments with a Cheetah chassis equipped with an aluminum pan. That will end up being a ligher overall chassis because the steel center section is lighter than the Champion center. Might be a dog... who knows.

New motor is Pro Slot 4002C and yes, I was considering replacing the can bearing! :) Funny you should mention that.

Next race will be very interesting... thanks for the tips!

When you have the motor apart straighten out the brush hoods and change the springs and brushes, but you know that.
You've been doing this longer than me.
