Yup, Russkit had a knockoff for their wire wheel insert. I showed it to Duffy and he wondered if there was something better (it is a little funny looking). We settled on the Monogram piece from their 1/25 Ferrari.

More wires..... This one comes in three sizes (but, not .500, although, I plan to do it in .500 eventually) and now has a two eared knockoff molded in as well.

Posted Image

The red one is the 1/24 Monogram wire insert. it also comes with a 3 ear knockoff molded in. It's .500 dia.

Those are I think .620, whatever the normal id of a ProTrack Big Hub wheel is.

Did Russkit actually do a Knockoff for their wire wheel. If you could show me a picture, I might have one.

I'll see if I can do these in .500 dia. It surprises the heck out of me every time they come out of the mold. Posted Image

These are the chrome hubs that came with the Lindberg kit , it I remember correctly. They are marked with the V8 insignia. I just whittled them down until they screwed into the thread, and the wheels are locknutted on the inside. You may need to blow up the photo by pressing CTRL and then scrolling with the mouse wheel, after first clicking on the photo . Gb

Yah, we talked about the Monogram wire inserts, but I don't have any to get a cast of. There was a conversation running concurrently, concerning the size of knockoff hubs--so many are just enormous, presumably originating from functional 5-40 nuts or otherwise writ large. The Scale Geekorati might want something less flambuoyant, y'never know.

I thnik I should leave the wheel-insert thing in Al's capable hands and work on bits&bobs: another geezer sent me some Russkit detail sets for particular cars, to pull moulds from--Chap. 2D, Maser V12 F1 (the Cooper?) and Eagle-Weslake (which may be a good fit as well, esp. the pipes, for Howmet's Cooper-Maser body?). I'll get busy.

One of the advantages of building drag racing slot cars is that vitually any kind of car can be made competitive in either an index class or in bracket racing. At Buena Park the variety is pretty staggering. A lot of the cars would be contest quality models yet often turn 35 to 60 mph top speeds. A few hard body cars go even faster. I'll have to start posting some of the "Lost Causes," of drag racing.

Here's one I pulled off eBay this week; it just arrived, and I'm just charmed out of my socks.
Now, I figure somebody's either gotta be crazy or deep in love to wrap an Auto Union over any chassis at all--

AU1.jpg

I bid on it mainly to pick up another DC-65, the body was gravy. It's screwed down through the cockpit and rides on the live rear axle; the guy
really wanted to get this out to the track, I guess. Considering he never painted it, I'm guessing he never planned a second trip to the track!

AU2.jpg

You can see the cutout for the ring gear here, and there's also a clearance hole on the other side for the armature shaft. There're also other
mounting holes on the body, down along the rocker panels. Apparently the guy wasn't happy with that chassis either, or else he suffered from
serious Fear Of Opacity. Could be.

AU3.jpg

Here's a nice solution to the fragile Dynamic boom! Pity the guide's sticking out that way.
I may just take this thing for a spin before I break it down to component parts per my original intent. I may have something to say later...

Well... no matter what you do, no way you can make it preform better with that motor!
Sooooo I would opt for more scale. In other words, larger more scale wheels and tires and shorten the mounting post to set the body correct with the scale wheels.

But that is just me. I like it! :)

Cool car, nice find!

I am with you on the "boom", it's a very neat solution, and probably will work too. To get the guide under the nose, I could help with a modern Sakatsu guide, but maybe someone has a old Cox trailing guide lying around?

Are those six-spoke Lola wheels on the rear? I have some Russkits like that but they have setscrews, did they make threaded ones as well?

The thing is that car probably ran fairly well when it was originally made. I think it is cool as it is.....

Hm. See response to TonyP, below.

Yah, let's try it.. Y'got my address, Pablo? and thanks in advance.

Yah, aren't they something? Only rears, though. If I manage to score some fronts, I'll make a Lola!!
That's the great thing about "Lost Causes"--it's not about the Slotcar, it's about the MODEL.

The thing is that car probably ran fairly well when it was originally made. I think it is cool as it is.....

Given the vagaries of Wintergreen & STP, I will know more later this week....
And, back in '65 when I was but a wee small Terribleist, I built an Auto Union Typ. C "Hillclimb" version, the narrow rear tyres doubled up as the only solution to getting adequate rubber on the road. Still wasn't enough, but who cares, it's Lost Cause and it's waaaaay cooooool. In this case, we really want SCALE tyres, gear-cutout-in-body notwithstanding. I'm currently setting up to make some tall tyres for my Vanwall, so I figure I can use some of those enormous Mille Miglia rims as the basis for these.

I've got a couple of Dynamic-chassis Lost Causes in the works now, on other threads; and I may well take the opportunity to incorporate some of the stuff I see here into those. Stay tuned.
