Monogram Chaparral 2D
#1

I recently acquired the excellent reproduction Monogram Chaparral 2D chassis, the model kit body was already in house. I plan on building the car in the near future. Can anyone post pics of their completed Chaparral 2D cars or maybe even post a copy of the slot car instruction sheet?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Not that it matters but the original Monogram model used the can-side driven X220 motor that was bolted, as on your model, on the end bell side, and had nothing to retain the motor from moving but a tab on the frame that was pushed into the can vent!
That was sounding like a pretty bad engineering deal, but actually it worked pretty well. The same was used of course on all the other Monogram cars using this chassis, from the three dream cars (Snake, Assassin, and Vampire) to the vac-body series of the Lola T70, Ford GT, Ferrari 330P/LM, and the rare McLaren-Elva. The regular injected-body McLaren-Elva also used the same chassis/motor combination.

If you use the stock gears, the retainer on the chassis works really well. I raced a Ferrari 330P/LM earlier this year in Italy in a vintage meet, and there were absolutely no meshing issues. No need for an extra C-clip that would really not do much than applying a bit of pressure but without the chassis tab would slide off anyway.

Which wheels/tires/inserts did you use on the chassis pictured?

Here is my build up from the reissued model kit. I used the Monogram brass chassis that I had in my junk box. A very fun car to take around the track without being worried that you were going to crash and lose a small fortune.
I also bought the wing actuator and wheel inserts to finish it off. The wing works perfect, just like it was designed to do from the original issue kit.
I can't remember who made them but I am sure someone on here knows who to contact.
Best Regards,
Don

So now that Peter is building his kit, I need to build up mine. Then need to find an original for the display case...

No, NOT picky, just trying to learn more and more about the vintage stuff, and thought you knew something about Cox wheels that I did not and wanted to learn...
And yes, you DO know more about this hobby than I do... ... like the car you built. It is builds like yours that inspire me to do my best when I build mine.

The ones for the plastic model wheels are too big to fit the slot car wheels, but if I remember correctly, I cut a set down using a model lathe until they press fit into the slot car wheels.

I used an FCR chassis and narrowed it and made it into an anglewinder to fit the full interior.
Pete, let me know if you want to see pix of a original Monogram 2D slot car; I have one as well.
"Drive it like you're in it!!!"
"If everything feels under control... you are not going fast enough!"
Some people are like Slinkies... they're really good for nothing... but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Nice work... hope to have mine up and running soon.
Maybe Slotblog can have a "Chaparral Show-n- Tell"; you know, Chappies that the guys have put together and/or raced.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I'm hoping to mate the 2D with the set chassis from the Chappy 2 that comes with the Monogram "Riverside Raceway" homeset. The body that came with the set is trashed. If it doesn't work for the 2D, I know it will fit my 904 body.

I'm returning to the workbench this week after a two week break for vaca.
The car body is almost complete and I hope to paint the interior this week as well as the driver. I'm having a time finding a pair of rear wheels large enough to get the chassis (also completed) off the tech block. I want to use the Monogram sponge slicks I have to try to keep the car as original as possible.
I'll try to post some pics when it's done.

The Cox 2D project is moving along slowly. Still looking for a suitable front windscreen replacement...

What did you use to do the detail lines on your 2D?
