Fellas,

I recently acquired the excellent reproduction Monogram Chaparral 2D chassis, the model kit body was already in house. I plan on building the car in the near future. Can anyone post pics of their completed Chaparral 2D cars or maybe even post a copy of the slot car instruction sheet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I am working on one for a friend out of Germany. This is a shot of the chassis that I put together from Professor Motor frame, Monogram motor, and mystery gears. The drop arm seemed too light so I added a nice fat brass drop arm weight... LOL!

Still gotta do the body and Chris's beautiful representation is my inspiration! ;)

Jairus,

Not that it matters but the original Monogram model used the can-side driven X220 motor that was bolted, as on your model, on the end bell side, and had nothing to retain the motor from moving but a tab on the frame that was pushed into the can vent!

That was sounding like a pretty bad engineering deal, but actually it worked pretty well. The same was used of course on all the other Monogram cars using this chassis, from the three dream cars (Snake, Assassin, and Vampire) to the vac-body series of the Lola T70, Ford GT, Ferrari 330P/LM, and the rare McLaren-Elva. The regular injected-body McLaren-Elva also used the same chassis/motor combination. :)

I was just working on an original chassis and managed to get one of the "C" clips on to the can side boss, outside the frame , to stop any movement, at the gear mesh. It seemed to help, though not stock.

Gary,

If you use the stock gears, the retainer on the chassis works really well. I raced a Ferrari 330P/LM earlier this year in Italy in a vintage meet, and there were absolutely no meshing issues. No need for an extra C-clip that would really not do much than applying a bit of pressure but without the chassis tab would slide off anyway. :)

Jairus,

Which wheels/tires/inserts did you use on the chassis pictured?

I believe that Professor Motor lists some of the plastic parts to convert the static body into a slot car, including the rear body mount and wing actuator. You'll find them under "Vintage & Repro Parts".

Glenn, the inserts came with the body so I think they are Cox. The wheels on the other hand are taper lock. Not in a package so I am guessing that they might be K&B but the inserts fit PERFECT! Tires... who knows. I buy wheel and tire lots on eBay and sort the good from the bad. These were good.

Peter,

Here is my build up from the reissued model kit. I used the Monogram brass chassis that I had in my junk box. A very fun car to take around the track without being worried that you were going to crash and lose a small fortune.

I also bought the wing actuator and wheel inserts to finish it off. The wing works perfect, just like it was designed to do from the original issue kit.

I can't remember who made them but I am sure someone on here knows who to contact.

As I said, in a previous post, Professor Motor carries them. They're listed under "Vintage & Repro Parts".

Thanks, Jairus, but Cox made wheel inserts??? Probably correct about the K&B wheels.

So now that Peter is building his kit, I need to build up mine. Then need to find an original for the display case... ;)

Hey J,

No, NOT picky, just trying to learn more and more about the vintage stuff, and thought you knew something about Cox wheels that I did not and wanted to learn...

And yes, you DO know more about this hobby than I do... :) ... like the car you built. It is builds like yours that inspire me to do my best when I build mine. ;)

I believe the original issue slot car model from Monogram came with two sets of four wheel inserts. Four of them fit the plastic model wheels and the other four fit the Monogram slot car aluminum wheels.

The ones for the plastic model wheels are too big to fit the slot car wheels, but if I remember correctly, I cut a set down using a model lathe until they press fit into the slot car wheels.

I recently purchased the same kit from eBay. I don't presently have a suitable chassis. Is eBay my only resource or does some retailer offer a suitable substitute?

PS: That model by Chris Clark is amazing!

Here you go, Pete.

I used an FCR chassis and narrowed it and made it into an anglewinder to fit the full interior.

Nice work... hope to have mine up and running soon.

Maybe Slotblog can have a "Chaparral Show-n- Tell"; you know, Chappies that the guys have put together and/or raced.

Pete,

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I'm hoping to mate the 2D with the set chassis from the Chappy 2 that comes with the Monogram "Riverside Raceway" homeset. The body that came with the set is trashed. If it doesn't work for the 2D, I know it will fit my 904 body.

Paul,

I'm returning to the workbench this week after a two week break for vaca.

The car body is almost complete and I hope to paint the interior this week as well as the driver. I'm having a time finding a pair of rear wheels large enough to get the chassis (also completed) off the tech block. I want to use the Monogram sponge slicks I have to try to keep the car as original as possible.

I'll try to post some pics when it's done.

Great! Can't wait to see what it turns out like. I had no luck with the set chassis so that is going under my 904. I just have to change the inserts. The next thing I'll try is mating a cox sidewinder to the Mono 2D body. I actually purchased one set up like this a few years ago on ebay. It looked and ran well and the modeler was able to keep the original interior.

The Cox 2D project is moving along slowly. Still looking for a suitable front windscreen replacement...

What did you use to do the detail lines on your 2D?
