NOS Slot car track found!!!
Albany, OR - Jairus press

Yesterday a slot car track was found in a huge storage shed in Albany Oregon. The shed, located 100 yards from I-5, had been a storage place during the last 40 years. Inside is a collection of stuff including cars, car parts, engines, juke boxes, stereo components, furniture and a slot car track.

My friend Jerry Kruger made the discovery when he went to purchase a 1956 Hillman wagon that he will be building into a pro-street hot rod. While there he and I purchased the track for $200 bucks. Turns out there might be three tracks there! A four lane track and 2 six lane tracks. I couldn't see any banked turns but there are about an even dozen turns... all flat. Some tight and some wide. I figure that a banked turn might not be apparent until the structure is built underneath. Therefore it's only guessing to say what type of tracks these are. The braid was glued down and most of the glue had dried to the point that the braid is peeling away.
The track had been here in this location since the late 60's according to the man in charge. There are no wheel marks on the turns apparent and the paint is the original - never repainted or resurfaced. I found only two drivers stations.

Unfortunately the track is buried up against the back wall behind a 1967 Plymouth Satellite. This Saturday I will go back and help pull it out for better pictures. More pictures here on my Fotki.

Although I have been talking about setting up a track here in Salem for over a year now... Looks like I am going to have to do something NOW! Jerry and I talked most of the afternoon and came to the conclusion that neither of us has the time or interest to devote to a business like this. However, Jerry has a lot of friends in Jefferson who own a lot of commercial buildings in downtown Jefferson. Buildings that are currently empty! Weird how doors open when you least expect it! Jefferson a little quaint town located 2 miles from I-5, Twenty minutes from Salem and 5 minutes from Albany. About an hour and a half from Portland and less than an hour from Eugene. Almost dead center of the Willamette Valley and if a track were located here... would become the only commercial track(s) in the area and the second in Oregon!

Interesting find...... parts of it looks 60's vintage construction ( double decker sections ) and other parts look like modern 90's and later construction with some sections being single deck construction.

I would say it wasn't anything "commercially" built, but more homemade.

Should provide hours of entertainment once it's up and running.

Although it is hard to tell from your photos, I would not be at all surprised that what you have is a one of a kind club track(s).

I remember racing on many a 4 and 6 lane "basement" routed track in the 1970's.

Good luck to you in your restoration efforts. If you feel the restoration is beyond your capability, I'd strongly suggest contacting Gary Gerding at Gerding Fast Tracks as he does rebuild/restoration and I can assure you that you will end up with a first class track. Gary could also do the wiring, provide a modern power supply and proper drivers panel.
That's thirty minutes away. I'll be there in ten.

Real kool find Jairus. I noticed the lane colors are correct, being it's only 6 lanes, the red and black are not on it, and colors are right for American. Lane rotattion will be in tact. WTG, will be watching for what all you dig out of the treasure trove...................

The four lane track should fit in your garage just fine! :shok:

Jerry called minutes ago. He found a guy who wants to set up a track and has some retail space collecting dust in downtown Jefferson.
I meet with him in an hour... guess I had better shave and put on a clean shirt.....

Wish me luck.
J

P.S. Think I will run by the storage and see what they pulled out by now. (Better remember the camera)

Just got back. The guy's name who wants to get this started is Papa. He is a slot car nut from way back and we reminisced for quite a while about the various tracks in Salem and the surrounding area. He was sooooo pumped about this and has some retail space (cheap space) to get this thing going. Once a program is started and a good customer base established we can move into a better location with better "curb appeal". The first location is no more than a windowless shop but it is dry, clean, heated and insulated.

Took a run out to the storage shed where the track has been stored but not much to report. The guy who was to pick up the '68 Plymouth that is sitting in the way didn't show... but, I learned that the car is actually a numbers matching 330 Roadrunner. Pretty cool except it looks like every bolt-on part has been removed and put into a cardboard box in the trunk, passenger compartment and underneath. I doubt that even as clean as it is... anybody but a true aficionado will ever be able to put it back together!

Jerry, Papa and I are taking a truck and flat bed out tomorrow and see if we can pull out all the necessary parts for the track, legs (we found them), drivers stations and whatever else that is related.
Also found one of the track counters. It is a series of electronic pocket calculators on a board with wires that hook to the track. As the car passes over it sends a pulse to the calculator I suppose... but what pushed the addition button back then?
Pictures to follow tomorrow.

Now... I need to take some pictures of the bodies I have been painting and post! :)

Jairus, from the looks of the PINK track, it shows signs of being HASSE built to me. The construction method makes me believe this, as I have had some of his tracks and assembled them....

Rick, maybe you could explain what HASSE is for those who do not know....(me).

Rob, I will take pictures tomorrow and ask about the Roadrunner. But remember the distance... this is on the west coast and the car is NOT a roller!

There is also a tri-carb chevy engine on an engine stand that looks pretty cool too along with video games (industrial story variety), stereo equipment, victrola, gramma phones, televisions (new and old) not to mention the 20 something cars all around the exterior.
The neatest was a 1920's insulated ice-cream truck(not in the best of condition but on wheels)! Sort of like a "C" cab but with doors.

:D Hasse Nilsson is a track builder from Sweeden who built many tracks in the U.S. for a few years. I'm sure others will have more info about him. I met him when he built the tracks in Fishkill New York in 1992.

Hasse Nielson was a track builder in the 80's and 90's. Made dozens of tracks and that looks like his construction to me.

Tri-power Chevy, the only motor Chevy put trips on was the 348. Very much desired today for restoration purposes. Sounds like a real treasure island. Are the Valve covers scalloped? Wish I was closer, I would collect more STUFF. hahahahah

PS: oops Chevy also did a tri-power Vette, 427-435HP version but the stuff is too old for that, I think..

I asked and they told me it was not a vette motor but the valve covers are finned aluminum. Also has a set of tube headers and a 4 speed attached. Looks like a great street rod power plant and ready to run!

Thanks for the info on the track. If I find any markings I will let you know.

Collecting stuff is the reason this barn exists apparently. Boggles the mind to consider that there could be thousands of similar "storage" units all across this country!

The pocket calculator lap counter thingie was a John Ford deal. The tracks might be John Ford tracks then, and '80s/'90s vintage.

Princess huh? Heavy princess let me tell you!
This is what we ended up with.

Sorry for the dark pictures. I was taking this one into the sun.

Measures exactly 40' long and I estimate 14' wide.

We also have this NASCAR tri-oval.
Posted Image

This stuff is very heavy when you have to move each piece a number of times. My whole body hurts, but it all is now safely stored away. Papa is looking for a site to do our set up. My job is to give him a list of contacts for all the suppliers and be around to help set up the track. (Like I have any clue?)

The 4 lane track was cut apart and whom ever did that didn't mark the pieces. Papa and Jerry both spent over an hour attempting to figure out the layout to no avail. I quit when couldn't find my breath any longer.
We also have 3 power panels which look like they are in A-1 shape... if a bit old.
Posted Image

Also, if you are interested in the other crap in the barn... click on the pic to see the Roadrunner, video games and other crap.

WAYYYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy KOOL Jairus. What a find! The track being 40 feet long was probably commerical, although 6 lanes. Looks like it will be a fun track to run. Still say its Hasse built. The flimsy one with no bottom bracing to speak of probably a New American construction. THe power supplies, I could not read the front. look like VERY early American Racing, what brand are they?

The tri-power small block has double bump heads and that's probably an aftermarket manifold. I see another small block and probably the 383( doubt it is a 440 car) for the mopar on the floor. If it wasn't so far my bud would be out in a flash to gather up that mopar.

Lots of treasures in there. I dug the Ford Panel Delivery outside too! The Hillman etc.

Most likely an Offenhauser manifold with three Rochester two barrel carbs. I had one of those setup with progressive linkage on my 64 Chevelle many, many, many years ago. Worked like a giant four barrel. Sounded waaaay cool when I popped open the secondaries.

Have fun! :laugh2:

Rick, that tri-carb hot V8 was a 283. Or so I was told by Jerry Kruger. Jerry builds hot rods professionally and he knows his stuff. I asked why he did not snap up that 283 and he said that he already has two of them just like that one... :laugh2:
Indeed, the power supplys are Labeled "American Racing Tracks" or something like that. There are three of them and they each have 8 lane timers, a huge power control knob and power meter.

Brian, I went through ALL the 8-tracks that I could find. Best of the Eagles, Beach Boys and Carly Simon were the only tapes I was remotely interested in. The rest seemed to be County Western and nothing that I like. I have over 200+ tapes in my collection, including some of the coolest rock recorded at the time. I am pretty selective now since each and every one purchased needs taken apart, the "Sense tape" and the foam pressure pad replaced or they break as soon as you put power to it. Time is not kind to these vintage music storage cassettes.

Also found a WHITE model truck build up. Only missing the front wheels. Guy wanted $5 bucks for it and maybe was worth it (I would have turned around and sold it on ebay) as it as I might have sold for over $20. But I was so overwhelmed with the track that everything else I just ignored.
Besides, I wanted to pay only a buck or two for it just because of the layers of dust. :)

Jairus, I have never seen the older large version time sellers, like you have in black, I always saw them in silver/grey, the later versions were the same size, length and height, but about half depth and painted black but color coded on the face, with very similar facade. The large knob, variac, will allow you to dial from zero to about 18 volts to the track. They all also had a sticker on the front for the track they were issued with, Blue King, Royal etc.
I used to have one of those hooked up to all of my tracks for dual power and could allow kids to run the King at about 7 volts. They are also good if you just want a method to trip the relay on the track to sell time.

Can't wait to see your "Little Princess" set up and running. Nice find again.....

Thanks to MG for alerting me to this thread. The track is indeed built by Hasse. It is a pre 89 model since we changed to all 2x2 construction and lap boards after that. Hasse never changed to the lap board on his personalized versions but built many of them in the factory. Except for a couple of stints on his own, Hasse and I worked together right up to the end when we both decided to put "American Tracks" back in the box and he moved back to Sweden and I began recovering from my stroke.

Hasse never really worked "for" me but I handled the sales and shipping arrangements. Many times, I felt as if I was working for him. I did nearly all the design work on the computer and this design was duplicated about a dozen times, though mostly in 8 lane configuration. I think the painting for the "Pink" track was done by Mike in the factory. He liked to use the thin pin stripes and paint the top of the sides black as is done here. The oval may have been a freebie sold without sides. It too is from the pre 89 era. I gave a lot of drag strips and ovals away to seal the deal on sales when there was a slump.

The power supplies are Original American and the common size and style found in the early models. The plastic plates on the drivers panel is another clue as to the time period for these tracks. We never made any plastic plates in the 90's and all our drivers panels were custom built separately and attached to the side of the track, with matching controller pockets alongside.

I designed and our factory put out over 600 tracks in a 10 year period. I have always wondered where they all are now.
My new book "How to build a slot car track, the New American Way". has complete wiring diagrams and lots of hints and tricks to building/rebuilding a track.

Good luck with these "toys" Jarius and congratulations on a great barn find..... jf
