How to build a capacitive discharge magnet zapper?
#1

I own an old ERP Endurance magnet zapper. I hear these are not effective, unless a capacitive discharge power supply is built for them. Does anyone have schematics for such a supply?
Thank you, Slotbloggers!

Better to see what someone else has tried first. I'm short on development time these days, too.
Thanks!

Harley decided I needed it.....
Boy, this is like the tube-type CB stuff I've operated for 45 yrs. !! LOL!
Sure, I plan on adding a fuse going into the isolation xformer, & a quick-disconnect plug to separate the two pieces, & mounting the xformer on a wooden board w/ a sheild to keep prying eyes & fingers from getting ZAPPED ...
But.... It's very cool.... & heavy!... Both the posts have BIG wire wrapped around the steel slugs, so it'll be interesting to see how it works...
Thank you, Harley ... ... You da MAN!
Happy New Year!

It REALLY IS the best! Cost wise, it might be a few bucks more than refurbing your old one but worth every penny. I have no connection with Rick except to be a satisfied customer.

I was kinda expecting to see some big tophat diodes or a rectifier, and some monster electrolytic capacitors to store up a big DC charge.

I'll see what I can find as far as the schematics for our zapper (which is still in use here in our shop). It is one-off using actual lamination pole pieces and a capacitor bank, which discharges into a coil that feeds the pole pieces. We were getting higher gauss readings on our ceramic magnets after zapping than what we were getting from sending them off to be zapped by other people. The only use it sees now is for my HO habit and remagnetizing magnetos for vintage go-kart engines...

I had a couple of friends in Argentina who have successfully used it. No information about the coils. You'll have to experiment with that.

I am using the previous sketch to rebuild the Arlington Hobbies ZAPPER. Two 500 ft coils of wire.....It was used to zap RC motors - and blow household circuits....

GSuar: I have tried to print that one for years and only can get half of it.

Larry if I recall that zapped only needs a new recifier.

Yes, I had the same problem, and finally, after some work, I've put the halves together. The image in the post it's fine. I've attached a PDF also here.GSuar: I have tried to print that one for years and only can get half of it.

Mike, right - only blown out bridge rectifier, but John's house probably need a bigger AC service or at least a new circuit breaker to continue using it the way it is.

Re- the circuit diagram in the PDF . Where does the setup go that is being zapped?

On the right where the D4 diode is located are 2 coils. These provide the magnetic pulse to zap the magnets. Unfortunately the magnetic circuit is not shown that takes the field produced from the coils and routes to the holder of the can with magnets and slug. The magnetic path is through steel. Starting at the can with magnets and slug there are 2 pole pieces that hold these tightly. Each pole piece continues to a piece of steel that the coils are wrapped around. And then there is a piece of steel that connects them so that there is a continuous magnetic steel circuit from the north magnet through the pole piece to the first coil steel to the connecting steel to the second coil steel and back to the pole piece holding the south magnet in the can with slug.
