Hoffman's today:

Check this out!
It MUST be the same company as the logo is nearly identical... :)

Ed, how about posting some closeups of the light blue 55 or 56 Ford & the dark red coupe beside it when you have the chance? Both look to be interesting cars. :)

Ed W, actually, I'm using the STP box as an aging cellar.
Stick them in there for a few days before sending so the buyer can enjoy that ripe vintage smell

For the moment, one snap... I have three stockers. This one is a 704/426Ram. The others; 706 & Kemtron power. Will follow-up in the near future with
some detail pics of these jalopies. Not at all elegant frames, though the rust red Chevy is rather scale in it's external work.

I think a lot of fun track time could be had by guys handy with brass, a little solder, some cast-off 30's - 50's hardbodies and none too sticky tires!

All Hoffman boxes had the famous gold sticker and many were marked inside with an inked stamp.

In response to the original post, It does look like (although I can only barely make it out) there is a stamped inking similar to Hoffman's stamp inside the lid and a "No. 4" below and to the right of that. It does also have the characteristic Hoffman box corners too. These days I can find the same design of box corners but they are a larger size. I would like to see the hinges on the back! You would have to email the seller and ask for a better picture to be sure.
I would wonder how much woodworking Champion of Chamblee really wanted to gear up to do! Pretty likely that they bought directly from Hoffman and marketed the boxes themselves.
It would be interesting to write the Hoffman Company in MN and ask them if they had ever been based in Paramount CA. Pretty big coincidence that they have pretty much the same logo and both at least build some kind of boxes :!:

My Hoffman box I've used since 1964. Still to be used 2007, every week, to transport some of my cars for my weekly racing.

Hey guys, I have a small Hoffman box my folks gave me somewhere around 1966-67. It measures about 16"x8"x6". On the underside of the lid, very faintly in marker pen, it's marked $9.00! Notice the hardware, it's all nickle plated instead of the usual brass.

Four compartments on top and it looks like it originally had two in the bottom. I must have added the two sideways dividers as a youngster, as they're made out of pegboard!

Mike's box holds 8 cars plus room for a controller and tools. Is this the "standard" box?

I also have an older Hoffman box I'm very proud of. I recently scored this on eBay from a gal who's uncle had won it as a door prize drawing in the late 50's. It had been sitting on a shelf, unused, ever since he brought it home. This baby still smells like fresh cut wood when you open it up!

It came with paperwork from the supplier Hoffman must have used, named "Harbor Plywood Corporation" dated 1957 and the door prize ticket.

The constuction is a little different than the later boxes, as it corners and main constuction are held together with brass brads. Also notice the leather carrying handle. Its measurements are about 16"x8"x9 1/2" tall.

It now houses my Pittman motor collection.

I believe the Hoffman boxes were made with high quality marine grade plywood. That is why that flyer may have been in the box. I would have never thought a Hoffman box would exist in such pristine condition in this day and age. It was one of the highest quality slot racing products you could buy at the time and if you had one it really indicated that you had arrived and were serious!
It begs the question does Hoffman Co. exist anymore making something else? I know they got out of the slot box business in the early '70's. They should not be confused with the Hoffman electrical enclosure company up in Wisconsin or Minnesota. Totally different animal. I think the California Hoffman company may have made cabinents for houses and slot boxes as a sideline when things were slow.

I have 3 Hoffman boxes, I am the "Retro" owner of all. There are 2 large and 1 small. My racing buddy Lamar "The Pasagoula Flash" McClellan is the original owner of a medium size Hoffman box. Below are some pictures of my small box. I am currently using this box for my Retro cars.

Very cool, Rick!

Yep, I have over two dozen different Pittmans, mostly NOS with boxes. Perhaps this weekend I could get around to photographing and posting them. It's great to find another warped mind!

Pictures, we need pictures!
I also have boxes where the top is fixed, have a drop-down shelf, are much sturdier than the Hoffman and are tinted into the wood (but not really painted) in shades or either orange or green. Does anyone know who made those? :?

Hi Philippe. I believe that I own a smaller version of the orange tinted box you are asking about. It was my travel box back in the late 60s to early 70s when I was flying to races around the country. This particular box is made by Richie's, and I will try to take a photo tomorrow and post it here to see if it is the manufacturer you are thinking about. Take care.
