First off I would like to thank Dan Myers (aka the Cable Guy) for busting is butt to make sure that all the racers in the Penn-Ohio race series has an enjoyable day of racing. Second I would like to thank Renee Myers (aka Mrs Dan) on putting up with all of us and doing a great job taking pictures for the series. Next I would like to thank Lester (NESR) and behind the scenes John Mc Millan for a great day of racing in North East Pa. It's always a great day of racing when you can get together with a great bunch of people and laugh and have fun enjoying your hobby. As always I would like to thank all the racers that made the trip to NESR to race and also thank all the new faces that showed up.

WOW !!!:) What a day of racing... Had a blast yesterday... :D Thanks Lester for having us all...
The races went well ,:o except when the green lane failed.... :shok: But the HERO of the day ,goes to ANDY.. When the green lane went down, Andy jumped in and fixed it and and the races went on...;) It was nice to see some racers that I have not seen in a while. Hope you guys can make it to Ron's place.. HEY YO, See yea in a month BIG BOY..;) Can't wait to get on that little oval... THE BULL RING.... YEA.....

I think we are waiting on Larry Mattingly to put the days racing into a report.

Amigos,

Had a blast up there at NESR Thanks to alittle good fortune I was able scrap up enough money for race fees and tires!
A big thanks to Brian of Rem Raceway we tag team to NESR which turn out to be a fun event! Again Big Kudos to Andy who leap into action after the green lane went lame! The reverse Orange was very smooth and fast a great track.The 90 goin into the orange was very fast! Made your BUTT PUCKER! The BEST race for me was the F1 race LeRoy Moyer and I was racing for postion I was 2 laps down from Leroy made up the laps but when the track went off Leroy beat me by one inch! That falcon 7 roll gave him the advantage! That was a pretty fun way to end the day! No matter if you win or lose it was great to hang around with some very good people!
Hope to see everyone at Washington!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful words. The payout for all the work is seeing all the smiles and all the stories we all have to tell everyone about how good the event was. Just wish I could clone myself so one of me could get more practice laps.

A great day though, a couple early hiccups, but Andy "The Mad Scientist" Buczko pulled a rabbit out of his box of tricks and fixed that problem lane. So a big thank you to Andy.

A big thanks to Ron Culp for the help at the tech bench.

A great job by the camera girl.

A big thanks to Tom Lauterbach for a great Can-Am car.(Now if I could just borrow his or Jeff's trigger finger, I would be in business)

Lester you got a great little rocket fast track there. Hope to make it up there when I don't have to be so pre-occupied and really get to focus on just racing.

And thank you everyone who makes the drive out to these events. Without "ALL" of you men and women we wouldn't have such a successful series.

I'm off to work on the points and as soon as I have the full race report from Larry Mattingly I will get it posted for you all to read.

SOMETHING OLD … SOMETHING NEW ATNORTH EAST

A new track in an old venue, new faces,a return of some old friends and a few surprise performancesdominated the headlines, as the Penn-Ohio Retro Series (P-O) rolledinto Lester Lucas’ new North East Slotcar Raceway in North East, PAfor race # 2 of the 2010-11 season.




A newly installed 100’ Ogilvie-built‘reverse’ Orange track design, located in Dan Ebert’s old NorthGallery Raceway location, was the battleground for the 25 P-O racersand an outstanding field of 77-entries that turned out for the fourclass retro program on Sat. October, 9.




Some electrical problems forced raceofficials to eliminate the green lane from the nine-man round robinStock Car main, but that didn’t deter the stockers from putting ona wild and wooly show in their first P-O appearance on a road course.A few normal oval-track Stock Car competitors were among the missingbut the usual cast of front runners were on hand, as Jeff and TomLauterbach, along with Larry Mattingly quickly went to the front ofthe pack at the drop of the green. Jeff L. took command in the firstsegment and never looked back, beating his father, Tom, by a four-lapmargin. Jeff also picked up the two-point bonus, by turning in ablistering race lap of 4.18 seconds. Mattingly closed the gap on thesenior Lauterbach during the second half of the contest, but fell twolaps short to finish third, marking his first P-O podium. FrankElavsky was fourth, trailed by Jeff Little, Steve Ploskunak, LesterLucas, Brian McPherson and Aaron Ploskunak.




McPherson picked up his second StockCar concours win of the season with his Frank Elavsky-painted PontiacGTO. Elavsky took second place, while Steve Ploskunuk garnered third.




Jeff’s winning entry utilized anR-Geo chassis platform, constructed by Tom Lauterbach (138.2 grams),topped by an O/S 1968 Dodge Charger, and powered by a Falcon 7 geared8-28. The rest of the package included a Jet guide flag, Alpha rearslicks and TL front tires. Jeff used a Third Eye controller for theday’s action.

Tom’s second place car was also aself-built R-Geo chassis (136.6 grams) … O/S ’68 Charger …Falcon 7 (8-28) … Jet guide … Alpha rears … TL fronts …ThirdEye controller.

Larry’s third place mount was a RickBennardo-constructed R-Geo chassis (148.6 grams) … O/S ’67 DodgeCharger … TSR motor (9-27) … Parma guide … Alpha rears …R-Geo fronts … Third Eye controller.

After blowing a plethora of fuses in anattempt to get the green lane functioning properly again P-O racerAndy Buczko fiddled with the relay system, and solved the problem,much to the delight of the 21 Flexi-GT racers, who were divided into10 and 11 man round-robin mains.




In the A-main newcomer Mike Fleming, aveteran racer in other New York-based Flexi-car series, left littledoubt that he was the man to beat, jumping out to a two-lap lead inthe first segment. Defending class champion Tom Lauterbach was ableto keep Mike in his sights, but eventually ended-up settling forsecond place, four laps off the pace. Long time Ohio veteran BobKurkowski returned to action registering a solid third, while LarryMattingly raised some eyes with a good lap total for fourth. FormerTri-State wing car standout JimVerga came home fifth, followed by:Jeff Little, Andy Buczko, Canadian visitors Rob Garner and DennisDominey, Ron Culp and Steve Ploskunak.




Jeff Lauterbach ran away and hid in theB-main, easily outdistancing Brian McPherson and Brian Cox whofinished in a near dead heat for second (218.18 to 218.16). Dan Myerswas four laps back in fourth, trailed by Rick Bennardo, FrankElavsky, Jay Sabala, Aaron Ploskunak, Tiffany Rathburn and formerseries regular Rick Winkelman, who was an early retiree withmechanical problems.




The overall combined top-10 were:Fleming, T. Lauterbach, J. Lauterbach, Kurkowski, Mattingly,McPherson, B.Cox, Myers, Verga and Little. Fleming received thetwo-point bonus for fast time with a lap of 3.522.




Concours honors went to Frank Elavsky’sbeautiful Red Fox Ferrari. Second was Dennis Dominey, with Rob Garnerpicking up third place honors.




Mike’s winner sported a JK 11 chassis(100.0 grams) … O/S Chevron body … Falcon 7 (10-29) … JK guide… JK rear tires … JK fronts … DiFalco controller.

Tom’s second place entry also used aJK 11 frame (101.9 grams) … Red Fox Ferrari P4 … Falcon 7 (10-37)… Parma guide … Alpha rears … JK fronts … Third Eyecontroller.

Jeff used a JK 11 chassis (102.5 grams)to claim third place … Red Fox Ferrari P4 … Falcon 7 (10-37) …Parma guide … Alpha rears … JK fronts … Third Eye controller.

A 25-car field in the Can-Am classnecessitated the running of three mains. The first A-main was a ‘barnburner’, as eventual winner Brian Cox and Mike Fleming traded thelead back and forth for seven segments. With B.Cox up by two laps inthe final eighth heat, Fleming encountered a problem with his frontaxle, and was forced to drop out of action after only completingtwo-laps. That mishap allowed Rick Bennardo to inherit the secondspot, while Larry Mattingly finished a distant third, in front of RobGarner, Fleming, Aaron Ploskunak, Andy Buczko, and Tiffany Rathburn.




It was all Tom Lauterbach in theB-main, as he drove away from his closest competitor, BrianMcPherson, by a margin of 21-circuits. Jeff Little had a solid run toclaim third place ahead of Jim Applequest and Ron Culp, who finishedon the same lap. Lester Lucas, Leroy Moyer and Mike Cox finishedsixth thru eighth.




Jeff Lauterbaugh had a little moredifficulty in the C-main, as he held off Jim Verga to win by a marginof 13-laps. Rick Winkelman got back in the groove to nail down thirdplace over Steve Ploskunuk, Dan Myers, Jay Sabala, with a supereffort, Frank Elvasky, Dennis Dominey and Bob Kurkowski, who droppedout early after damaging his front end in a crash.




J. Lauterbach outdistanced T.Lauterbach by four-laps to pick-up the overall win. Jeff also turnedin a fast lap of 3.621 for the two-point bonus. Verga was awardedthird place. Rounding out the top-ten were B. Cox, Winkleman, S.Ploskunak, McPherson, Bennardo, Myers and Sabala .




The top concours award went to FrankElavsky. Second and third went to Rick Winkelman and Dennis Dominey.

Jeff’s winning Can-Am car was a TLbuilt R-Geo chassis (106.5 grams) … O/S Ferrari 414 … ProSlot‘Puppy Dog’ (7-28) … Parma guide … Alpha rear tires … TLfronts … Third Eye controller.

Tom’s second place entry used a TLbuilt R-Geo chassis (105.2 grams) … O/S Ferrari 414 … ProSlot‘Puppy dog’ (7-28) … Parma guide … Alpha rear tires … TLfronts …Third Eye controller.

No information was available on JimVerga’s third place car.

Twenty-two open-wheel Penn-Ohio FormulaOne entries signed-in for the finale, setting up two 11-car mains.Jeff Lauterbach was again the big winner in the A-main, but the starof the show was Rick Bennardo, who finished only 10-laps down toregister his best performance of the year. Jeff Little put in anothersteady drive to finish third ahead of Larry Mattingly and StevePloskunuk, who experienced some guide issues on black lane afterbeing in the hunt for a podium finish. Next in line were Ron Culp,Jim Applequest, Aaron Ploskunuk and Andy Buczko. Mike Cox and BrianMcPherson were forced out early with mechanic ills resulting fromheavy crashes.




Tom Lauterbach outlasted a fast closingBrian Cox to win the B-main by only four-laps .Frank Elvaskyregistered his best finish of the day to capture third, Lester Lucasedged Rick Winkelman by track position for fourth place, while LeroyMoyer did the same to Jay Sabala for sixth. Rounding out the fieldwere Rob Garner, Bob Kurkowski, Dan Myers and Dennis Dominey, all ofwhom experienced car problems.




The combined results found TomLauterbach taking his only overall win of the afternoon over B. Cox,J. Lauterbach, Bennardo, Elavsky, Little, Lucas, Winkelman,Mattingly, and Moyer. Brian Cox received the two-point bonus, turninga quick time of 3.73 seconds.




Brian McPherson pick-up his secondconcours award of the afternoon. Andy Buczko was second with his‘jail door’ entry. Rob Garner was third.

NORTH EAST NOTES…




… The North East reverse OgilvieOrange quickly became a crowd favorite. Despite some electronic andbraid issues, the track was smooth and fast, resulting in a verycompetitive afternoon of racing. Thanks to owner Lester Lucas, alongwith former North Gallery Raceway owner Dan Ebert, who served as racedirector. Also a thank you to John McMillan, who kept things runningsmoothly behind the scenes.




… The ‘new’North East Raceway islocated in the very same location as the former North GalleryRaceway, which housed a King Cobra, as well as the ‘Bullring’oval now located at Washington Slotcar Raceway.




… The road course debut of the P-OStock Car class was a success, producing some of the closest racingof the day. And not nearly the ‘crash-fest’ that was expected bymany.




… Larry Mattingly ran perhaps theheaviest car ever entered in a P-O event, as his Stock Car tipped thescales at a whopping 148.6 grams. “My wrench, Rick Bennardo, keptadding weight, and the thing just kept getting faster,” saidMattingly.




… Good to see some ‘old faces’returning to P-O action. Welcome back to long time veterans JimVerga, Bob Kurkowski and Rick Winkleman.




… P-O went ‘International’ asCanadian racers Rob Garner and Dennis Dominey traveled across theborder to give retro a try. Rob and Dennis said they had fun, andvowed to return. Hopefully they can get some retro action going attheir home track, Niagra Scale Speedway




… Newcomer Mike Fleming gave everyonea driving lesson in Flexi-GT, as the Great Valley, NY residentdominated the class. Mike calls Fantasy Raceway in Rochester home.




.… Rick Bennardo was smiling from earto ear, as his R-Geo chassis’ took eight of the nine podiumfinishes in the scratch built classes. And to top off the day ‘RapidRick’ finished fourth in the Formula One class.




… The P-O minimum rear tire diameterand rear chassis clearance rule change for Formula One is payingdividends, as the class is drawing more competitors this season. Anddespite what the ‘doom and gloom’ naysayers had to say, the carshandle well, there is no track damage, and no ‘special’ chassishad to be built. Just lots of smiling faces, as competitors get tosave a few bucks in these tough economic times.

… Long time wing car racer Jim Vergawas proudly showing off his many hand carved wooden drag cars that heraces on the North East drag strip. A wood worker by profession, Jimsays the cars are very competitive.




… The unsung hero award goes to P-OBoard member Dan Myers, who serves as chief tech director and handlesall the paper work for the series. We all need to remember that Dansacrifices practice time the day of the race to make the event‘happen’.

Great Report Larry, ya still got the journalist in you!

Lots of thanks for this race; Thanks to:

* Lester Lucas for making it all possible in Erie again.

* Dan Ebert for race directing the entire event and not racing so we could all have fun.

* John McMillian for his being the counterman and all he put inot the raceway to make it possible to host their first race

* Thanks to Tom ad Jeff Lauterbach(The Sheriff and Deputy) for putting their R-Geo chassis' in the top spots again in both CanAM and F1.

* Brian Cox for putting his Josh Cruthvield built Victory on the podium

* Andy Buzco for quickly fixing the subborn relay into submission so we could have the race.

* Dan Myers for giving his all, every event to keep it all rolling along in a tinely manner.

* Renee Myers, the Official PO Photog for doing a great job in that dept.

It was nice to meet some new racers and also reaquaint myself with some that I have not seen for a while. I forgot how much fun an Orange was to race on and this one is a HOOT! Great track for retro! Great the Cnucks came down and I see more of them coming in the future. Nice to race with Jimmy Verga again, been a few years and hes always a great time at the raceway.

This is a wonderful group of racers to spend the day with. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a PO event, DO IT!, you won't be sorry. The atmosphere is the best and the racing is fun.

Looking forward to Washington, my home track, for another great race day. BTW, if you leave Washington hungry, that's your fault. Ron is the caterer to set the bar. Be there!

Rick thanks again for the loaner, sorry it got walled.
Thanks Brian Cox for getting it ready for me.
I was a little edgy after my flexi race.
It was fun to meet some new people and see a couple familiar faces again.
I might try retro again one of these days, who knows.
