A very confused site.
And no, none of my possibly 20 faves are even mentioned in that festival of rolling billboards.
It would be nice to see some nice cars in there, like say, a 1954 Panamerican Ferrari 375... ;)

Missing are Yardley BRM, STP turbine car, If its about graphics then there is many Nascar and Indycar teams with sharp appearance.

Must not have had many Americans included in that survey. Got to have these paint jobs and graphics on that list in my book!!!

Any of the fluorescent orange STP cars from the 60's.
Lowenbrau Porsche 962
Castrol IMSA Jag
Sunoco Porsche 917/30 Can Am car, not the Camaro paintwise.
90's Cart Gurney Eagle with the eagle head on the nose
Fabulous Hudson Hornet
Any of the Nascar TIDE RIDES from DW's days
1972 Olsonite Eagle
The orange Can Am McLarens 1967/1972
Smokey's Black and Gold Chevys

And this list was just from looking at my diecast collection for a few minutes. Glad they put the Pig Car 917, the JPS Lotus and Gold Leaf Lotus in there list.

M.G.,

First of all, thanks for sharing. I always like to look at liveries as it stimulates the thought process.

However I am a bit confused as to the logic behind the choices for "The 50 Greatest" paint schemes.

I must say there are many others that are more notable with regards to history.

In the same vein there are others that are more complex.

And certainly there are others that were provided by sponsors with deeper pockets.

I am very glad to see at the Gulf livery as #2.

One livery I would have expected to be included would be this:

Just my opinion of course.

Once again, thanks for posting these as I did enjoy!

It's just like disagreeing with the Playboy Jazz Poll, only louder!

I was trying to figure out the criteria for "Greatest" and pretty much decided it was "How NOT-Esthetic you can get, multiplied by the number of masks required"--some of thins was just silly.

Except the Daytona Coupe. A not-sillier car never rolled.

UOP Shadow , ELF Tyrell, Surtee's Lola T70, Chaparral Pennzoil indycar, AAR Cuda, Penske Javalin, Budweiser Dekon Monza, Holberts Fosters Lager Porsche Indycar was beautiful. So was Sullivans Miller Alfa. The Dominos indycar was hard to miss. Menard's cars too, they literally seemed to glow.

I'm glad they picked the Johnny Player Special and the Gulf Mk1.
But missing from my list are the Penske Pennzoil, Tony Stewart Swagger, McLaren Mobile1 F1, Suntrust Pontiac.

I see that many of you rose to the bait- it's like the age old tap room debate about blonde/brunette/redhead.

There certainly were lots of creative and beautiful racing car liveries that were not included- there is no question about that. I would have to say that at some point the author (not me by the way) had to draw some sort of a subjective line to arrive at 50 rather than 500 or more.

Marty- Was that livery ever raced on 917/10-015 in-period? I seem to recall that car being re-painted from the original WKRT/Bosch livery long after the Can-Am and Interserie were no more. 2002 is the date that sticks in my brain, but I could be wrong.

Niels- Wasn't the 917 Martini "Hippie" livery included in the article's top 10? Did you miss it?
That's thirty minutes away. I'll be there in ten.

No, it is the 1980 Indy car with the Gurney Chevy engine that destroyed the field at Milwaukee after starting last on the grid with zero practice. I had to paint that SOB overnight, all 3 colors over the base pale blue coat, Ditzler epoxy stuff. I probably will get lung cancer from breathing the fumes that night... ;)
Is this the one you prefer?

It's the ex-Willi Khausen Interseries car, that was later acquired (and repainted by) Peter Kaus for his Rosso Bianco museum. The car was auctioned recently after the museum closed and all contents were liquidated.

Is this the one you prefer? --------- I always liked this Eagle and graphics the best!!!! But,

Or is it this one? ------------- Wow, I don't even remember this Eagle at all. When I started road racing bikes in the early 70's. I did not pay much attention to four wheels things until 1983 again. But I sure do like this one too!!!! Great graphics too.

1978 ARCO-Eagle.
It was not a very good year for the car that was simply not that good. Bobby Unser left at the end of the year to go drive a better machine...
But it, and its trailer, were pretty spectacular and won me the Ditzler Award for best paint at the Indy 500 (I won that 3 times):
