An all-time true classic. The work of Tony Southgate, who designed some pretty serious cars all the way through the 1990's. Its "stock-block" 3-valve engine is still existing and on display at the Riverside Museum.I like this one.

It's just like disagreeing with the Playboy Jazz Poll, only louder!

It's true, it's true! Someone actually DOES read the articles in Playboy!
I've been telling my wife that's all I read for years now!

You mean all of Gurney's "stock block" Fords with the Gurney Weslake heads that he ran in the USAC Indy Car races back then were not the 2 valve heads that everybody including me thought were on that motor??? I thought the 3 valve motor was only tried in 1 or 2 Can Am races back then?? I guess you learn something new everyday!!!
Robert Kickenapp, AKA RRB (Road Race Bob or when I fell down, I became Road Rash Bob)
"Honest, I swear its stock" My answer to tech officials at post race teardown many a time.
That bike wouldn't do 150mph if you dropped it down a mineshaft!!!

Donohue had that race won until he blew up.
Parked the car along the inside wall at the North end of the Main Straightaway.
It got destroyed by another car near the end of the race.
One of the best looking cars ever to run at The Speedway.

These heads were quite good and were used as well as the 2-valve, harry Weslake designed well-known AAR heads. There was also a 3 valve pushrod head developed by John Miller at AAR. The first set suffered from coolant passage problems that allowed steam pockets to form and were subsequently revised to fix that problem.
It is possible that AAR did not advertise those 3-valve heads too much because there was a pile of 2-valve heads for sale, and I recall that even in the mid-1980's, there must have been dozens of unsold new heads in the storage area above the shop. As vintage racing became very popular, they were eventually all sold.

A Gulf 908/3 at #9 seems a good choice but I'm not fond of the livery they chose and I *certainly* prefer the car w/o headlights.
Always loved the red & blue on white Martini livery. Sin liveries - smokes and liquor - are my faves. God help me...

Dokk, I won't dispute that list but I have a nit to pick with it - and I'm sure you saw this - #3 is a GT40 MKl not at Mk ll.

"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."
Alexis de Tocqueville
"In practice, socialism didn't work. But socialism could never have worked because it is based on false premises about human psychology and society, and gross ignorance of human economy."

That is one day I sure wish I was a fly on the wall at Rousch Racing. I can just hear the discussion now . . . .
Jack: Mark, the reason I asked you in to my office was to discuss the new sponsor for your #6 car for next year. Valvoline has dropped out and we have another outstanding sponsor so we can keep the #6 Taurus running a full schedule.
Mark: Jack, that's great news. So, who is the sponsor?
Jack: Well it has the same first letter and it is wide known. And if you don't mind they have asked you to participate in some of the commercials. Are you up for that?
Mark: Hey boss, you know me, I'll do what I can to make the sponsor happy! So who is it?
Jack: I'd like to apoligize in advance for any ribbing you might take in the garage Mark.
Mark: Okay, who are we gettin gon the #6 car????
Jack: Viagra!
Mark: Oh, Goodie!
Or words similar to that!

Bobby was leading by a country mile in 1972 when the distributor's rotor split and the car coasted to a halt...He should have won in `71 and Bobby Unser should have won in `72.
They blew up, that`s how it went with unlimited boost back then.
How often does this happens? Like, never. It was the most rotten luck.
The engine to that car is still alive and well.

Dan's racecars seemed always well turned out and sharply dressed.
But gentlemen- the website doesn't list the 50 most beautiful racecars of all time, it's the 50 greatest liveries (decos) of all time.
A single color car with sponsor logos plastered on it (no matter how appealing the arrangement) I don't feel is what they were going for.

You`re right, I remember that now.
Here`s a picture of Donohue in the `71 race.

In this bright future you can't forget your past.
BMW (Bob Marley and the Wailers)
United we stand and divided we fall, the Legends are complete.
I'm racing the best here at BP but Father time is much better then all of us united.
Not a snob in this hobby, after all it will be gone, if we keep on going like we do, and I have nothing to prove so I keep on posting because I have nothing to gain.
It's our duty to remember the past so we can have a future.
Pistol Pete you will always be in my memory.
