Hudy comm lathe?

I recently bought a brand spanking new Hudy comm lathe, just yesterday I removed the shrink wrap packing and realized there was no cutter?

Is this the way they come?

Would there be a better alternative then the $167.00 diamond cutter from Hudy, OR is this the best option?

Still learning...

Thank you,

Brian

Brian,

You can buy a diamond bit on eBay for $50.00.

After reading the description, I doesn't say if it will also fit the Hudy.

Hi Victor,

Yeah, I noticed this also... but it does have the name Hudy in item description.

Just got word from an inside source also that says the company that makes these diamond bits is located in the next city over from where I live. Waiting to hear back from that person on the exact name of the company, and was told it would probably be even cheaper then this one listed on eBay!

What gets me is when you look in the Hudy book it doesn't say in there that it doesn't come with a bit!

:shok:

That diamond will work fine but will not cut capped comms.

I would get the one for capped coms; that way if you ever start to race Euro or opens you're set and the resale will be higher.

Or you can buy my Hudy diamond bit because I need one for capped comms.

Brian,

The bit that you show the link for in your post will NOT work in a Hudy comm lathe.

The Hudy takes an AL-4 bit, or a bit that cuts from right to left. The bit in the link that you put up is an AR-4 bit, that cuts from left to right. That particular vendor does carry the AL-4 diamond bits for the Hudy, as I brought one from him earlier this year. You might just have to email him and see if he has them in stock, usually he has both types on hand.

You can also get a very, very nice quality diamond bit for the Hudy from McMaster-Carr supply. Just go to McMaster-Carr's website and do a search for AL-4 diamond bit. It's a little more than what this guy on eBay sells for, but its still half the price of the Hudy bit and much better quality. I'll never buy another Hudy bit; they are way overpriced.

But again, you are looking for an AL-4 bit to work in a Hudy lathe.

I think you're talking about Carter Diamond Tool Corp in Willoughby, OH. Their website now indicates they went out of business in Oct 2009 and their assets were bought by J&M Diamond Tool, Inc., in East Providence, RI.

Brian,

It depends where you get it. I use Scott at PCH and in his listing it does say that it doesn't come with bit. Kinda dumb to sell a lathe with no bit, don't you think? But then again, after seeing what they charge for a bit, I think I'd rather shop around... LOL.

Let me know how you make out as I'm in the market for a new bit as well, but I don't want to have to pimp out Jennie to get one. :laugh2:

I'm looking at getting the diamond bit from J&M Diamond Tool.

They have the 60 degree (Style E) that will do capped comms as well as normal comms for a really good price.

Carter Tool was bought by J&M Diamond Tools. That is where everyone get the capped com tools from. You can get it for about $75

David Liebenthal at Proformance Racing also markets a capped comm diamond bit for Hudy lathes which you can see here. David also has the ability to re-lap the bit when you feel it needs it. The McMaster-Carr diamond lathe bit to fit the Hudy (part number#3316A42) can be found on this page.

Gary, How do you know what one to get? They have a bunch of different one's to choose from. I just checked out the page, and the prices are very good.
