The Third Annual Checkpoint Cup is now history. This year's three-day event had eight different race categories and lots of very close, but fun racing.

Thanks to BPR's Jim and Debby Watterson for hosting their first Checkpoint Cup. Thanks for the hot dogs on Saturday, Debby!

Thanks to all of the race sponsors and raffle prize donors (a separate post will highlight our sponsors/raffle prize donors).

Thanks to our race directors: Paul Sterrett, Robert Park, Bill Vanderziel, and Keith Tanaka.

Thanks to our various volunteers and assistants: Philippe de Lespinay, Barney Poynor, Craig Correia, Gary Donahoe, and many others.

Thanks to Rick Salvino, Adam Kirchhoffer and others for helping out with the prize raffle.

I was looking at your great website.
Pictures of the Stock Car Race, and I noticed tape on the front of the chassis on a couple cars.
I thought this was a NO NO in Retro.
Are the rules different in SoCal or just for this class?

Not trying to start a flame war with any Retro Grouches, just wondering.

Thanks,

Not legal in IRRA but I think OK in D3.

Yes, D3 allows the tape on the front of the chassis as long as it meets the .015" minimum front clearance.

The tape is there to protect the track from damage from the chassis by allowing it to glide over the painted surface when the driver is pushing it hard. Clearance must of course remain as per the D3 rules, 0.015" at any part of the chassis front edge.

Besides it looks trick and cool. :)

Okey Dokey Philippe, hey do you still have that 100 acre parcel of land in Southern Florida available, I want to buy that also?

Sure thing Doug. Send the down payment to my PO box in Switzerland. :laugh2:

ALL cars I personally tech-ed cleared the 0.015" under their tape when they had any.

Did not have a chance to see all the fun on Friday or Sunday, but seeing the pics makes me feel like
I was there. Thanks once again for your hard labor.

Isn't it better for the chassis to be gliding over the track on some helicopter tape, rather than draggin on the track with NO FRONT WHEEL !
Are .007 Lexan bodies legal ?

Hey Guys! I want to thank Keith and Paul for organizing such a great event and to Jim and Debbie for hosting it. The gang of people there were the best. Thank You Philipe for the tour at Scotts' place and thank you Scott for allowing my intrusion into your home. I have a great memory of last week-ends' event. Jimmie Bling, thanks for the extra fine dinner. I'm looking forward to next years event. Gus in Sacto.

Have to say looking at pics of my self on the blog is really bad and I sure don't like it. :laugh2:

I don't even like to get my face on the race line up because I don't like it, don't like mirrors and things like that.

Have not find a way out of that one yet.

There must be a way? I guess I could stop racing but is that a solution?

Hi

Talked to Charlie Nelson last night. You guys made him feel welcome and he wants to do it AGAIN, but say in spring without the threat of snow in the passes.

Thanks guys.

He was even charmed by Philippe!

So, anything on offer say in spring?

As a painter bad or good, :D but get real what is this stuff about the most "Most Realistic" STUFF? :laugh2:
Oh it might be the buddy system in works? :D
Artistically very few that I would have picked. :laugh2: Sorry about being so frank (Who Is Frank anyway?) but as a paint slapper as
myself I did not find any thing interesting in those choices?
Sorry I think I would have picked a better one. ;)
Oh well its all about taste and I guess it could be argued all night long?
Heck just look at their clothing's and their shoes, and they now how to judge concourse? :laugh2:

Nesta, I judged the concours for the CanAm, not because I wanted to but because I was there trying to help move the show along. Next time if you are present at the tech table I'm sure you would be welcomed to judge and use your own criteria. I was at every CanAm race run at Riverside International Raceway and I know a realistic race car when I see one. In my opinion the most realistic car won. Best presentation is a much more subjective call, there were many very nicely turned out cars. Although some, perhaps many, will disagree but I give extra points to self painted cars. Certainly the Noose and other professionally painted bodies are works of art but I believe that buying and mounting a body takes much less skill than painting your own.

As Gary points out, "realistic" concours should go to the entry which looks like the real car. The Can Am cars of the 60's/70's were plain jane's compared to today's racing cars with their over abundance of sponsor logos and ads and some with wild paint jobs.
I asked Gary to judge concours because of his racing background and knowledge of the real race cars. Surprisingly, many of our retro racers are not experts on the appearance of the real Can Am cars. Gary as well as a few others (Paul Sterrett being one of them) in D3 are experts on the appearance of the real race cars of that era.

Concours judging is very subjective, but over time, we've seen the cream of the crop consistently winning. Perhaps one day we can have a special race which will highlight the appearance of the car 50/50 with the race results ala MESAC. For those who aren't familiar with MESAC, it was probably the most elite slotcar club in America in the 60's and had exclusive club races which counted concours as being just as important as the race itself. The MESAC concours judging consisted of a very detailed point system.
