How about a bit of light hearted banter to ease the tension.
 
These are some that I've heard (might have even used one or two)

The power supply: "It was running at 14v and I'd set it up for 12v"
The lighting: "The glare was too much for me"
Someone else: "This isn't my car, my mate set this one up"
The manufacturer: "Obviously I got a bad batch, these motors are really underpowered"
The venue: "I felt too cramped and couldn't relax"
God: "God hates me and doesn't want me to win and be happy"
Oh man... the controller's sticking again.
My motor is dying.
The marshal was too slow putting me back on.
No brakes...!
Did you pay the other drivers to be kamakazes, because they kept knockn' me of the track.
I'm the host so I have to let someone else win every now and then so they come back.
I forgot to lick my tyres.
I would have won except for the corners ...
It takes a bit of getting use to a left hand drive.
My controller wiper arm does not always make contact with the resistor
My gears are stuffed.
Do not have full power in my lane; must be a short somewhere.
My lane must be dirty as the tyres do not have the usual grip
I loaned this car to someone else recently and it has not been the same since
This drivers station does not feel quite right.
This is not my usual controller.
Im SOOO hung over!!!

Too much / not enough spoiler angle (so why didn't you fix it on a lane change?)

That's no kidding. I try to go for as few track calls as possible when race directing. Nothing ruins a race for me more than having to drive in a "choppy" race.

 

Of course this requires me to be paying attention fully to the race and not playing words with friends or texting on my iPhone.

That was a BIG problem IMHO last weekend at the IRRL race at Lake Barrington. Beau-coup hot soccer moms. Glad that John Austin (AKA "Johnny Slot Car") thoughtfully erected tensa-barriers to hold them back.

My 11 handout motors I was forced to purchase were all as slow as everyone else who only bought a single one so I could not win.

Just like Drag racing the 1 to 1's. I've heard every excuse at the track too. Let's just face it, your car is slow and you suck as a driver
