After more than 38 years away from slot racing, a good race boddy from the early '70s, Niels Elmholt, lured me back to race and airbrush painting again.

What or how did you transfer the stars from the paper to the body?

From the paper with black stars in same pattern, I took a clear sheet of masking, draw the stars with a pencil to the mask, cut it out with a sharp X-Acto knive, put away the cut-out stars, and used the mask with the "starholes" at the 1/32 body in one piece. Painted with Faskolor pink fluet, backed up with faswhite, off with the mask, then yellow fluent faded on, then orange fluent to rest of body, backed up with faswhite between the lay of color, and was finished.

 

The cut-out stars put on the 1/24 Mercedes body in same pattern, same method of painting with the airbrush.

 

Remeber the use of a hair dryer between the layer of color to speed up the process - attention: not too close to the body it will melt down/being soft.

Here is my project from last summer, for the Danish Champs 1/24 Can-Am series with Neckcheese chassis NWP 1 (White Point).

 

Even in my old slot car days (1971-72) I painted my bodies as Stars and Stripes, so why not do it for my "new" start in slot racing?

Are you racing on the MTT that came from Seattle?

Sorry, Craig, I haven't get the oportunity to race this nice a "big" track, because its positioned in Copenhagen and I live at Fünen on the other side of Great Belt.

 

The new owner had written some articles  about the work to set up the track at its "new home" at the danish homeside Scalerace.dk - last year.

I'm sure that I will get the opportunity to race on it in the near future.

Just returned from 2. Danish Champs for Can Am cars - not very succesfull this time, but anyway I used a new body from my paintshop, Lola T70 on a NWP2 chassis from Neckscheese, and the colours could be  seen at all parts of the track.

I have continued some paintwork in my "hobbycave" for my good slo tracing friends in Esbjerg - town in the southwest part of Jutland.

 

More Lexan bodies are "in the pipeline" for the airbrush.

I'm curious about the "star car". Obviously, you had the starts and big stripe masked off when spraying the white. How did the light purple shading come to be? Did you just spray over onto the white some, and the darker purple just shows through the white? I'd like to see the underside of that car.

I'm not answering for Jan, but if I were painting it, I'd do it in this order.

 

1. Negative mask the body & spray the stars & stripe purple. 

2. Remove the masking & fog the stars & sides of the stripe pink.

3. Spray the complete body white.

 

Now let's see what Jan says.

...Or, positive mask & a too-light white coat, so that the purple spray shows from underneath. It gets worse if you then back up with a white undercoat.

I have one I'm working on that has just this problem; I'm trying to make it look deliberate now. You'll see it in "Duffy's Inks" when it's done.

For Tex, Bill and Duf

Normally I use Fascolor but this time I have tried some new water based non-toxic lexan paint from Vallejo called Premium Acrylic Polyurethane color

 

The violet star white Volvo S 60 I do it this way:

1. Mask the stars and the big stripe

2. Shaded it very light ( low airpressure on the airbrush) with magneta fluorenscent color around the stars and along the big stripe

3. Painted the hole body with opaque white ( thin layers 2 times)

4. Removed the starmask and big stripe and sprayed with Violet Fluorescent color (thin layers 2 times)

5. backed the hole body up finally with opaque white one time.

6. removed mask for headlight, stoplight and grill and painted in hand with small brush (fascolor black and red)

7. finish

Thanks Jan for your painting details. It doesn't sound as if any of us in the US guessed all the steps you used. With a quick look on the internet, it doesn't appear the Vallejo brand of acrylics you used are available in the US, or at least not yet.
