Has anyone looked into 3D printing of a plastic model? Our group would like to start a plastic model 1/24 Daytona Prototype class. I don't know of any DP plastic models in 1/24 (except for the now defunct Resilient Resins - not available anymore). Below is my experience - not very successful.  Any advice? Any lead on a plastic 1/24 DP?

There are so many great 1/32 cars available that could make some great 1/24 slot car bodies. I have thought about, but know little about 3D scanning and printing but why not scan the 1/32 car, scale up the design to 1/24 (or maybe larger) then "print" the new model.

I have made a few enquiries but am not yet satisfied. GKS indicated that they could scan and create an STL file (the format needed for 3D printing).  GKS claims to have a very high quality scanner but what do I know? GKS would not give me a final quote but said that the project would likely be complete at their minimum charge of $500 (WOW).

Next I contacted makexyz Dave Perry. Perry has a low to medium quality 3D printer and estimated $150 for the "print". I saw the quality of a recent print and was quite disappointed.

So, in summary, I have concluded that the scanning cost is way too high and the print is way too low in quality.

Give it time, Rich. The cost will eventually come down and I'm betting it won't take too long for that to occur.

On my recent visit to the US I had the pleasure of meeting a slot car enthusiast living in Marin county. He had a scanner and a printer in his workroom.

He had successfully printed some 1/32 chassis components. He gave me two chassis' to bring home to build up and put under resin body cars.

They are neatly finished and certainly rigid/strong enough. I could put up some pictures but they are his design and build so I hesitate to do so.

He is putting out a few ff motor pods for (I think) Slotit chassis in the near future.

Maybe use some 3D software that creates/uses the needed files and use Shapeways for the printing etc.

Neckcheese aka Niels has designed and 3D printed several chassis with great success.

While we wait for an enterprising 3D programmer to make the Daytona in solid...(Howmet TX here on S'Blog) pulls a fine 1/24 shell of the car, and one of these days I'll pack a chassis under it, as last updated HERE - both Noose & I are American contacts for John's stuff, so you could PM either of us for shells if you want.

Wow that looks a great pull & mold for the Daytona , great job by Howmet :D

Look forward to seeing it when you manage to finish the car :)

Here's an article on 3D printing on the Popular Mechanics website, with a typically hyperbolic headline:

3D Printing Can Now Re-create an Entire Classic Car

There is an informed discussion of this on Slotforum.com HERE.

And HERE is a dude who did both a body and chassis. I bought two bodies through Sculpteo from him. They were about US$55.00 each.

The bodies are very nice but the finish is somewhat "porous" so don't expect a "shiny" commercial type finish. I'm not the highest standards guy but even these require a bit of work in order to be acceptable. I'm in the process of building the finish up with primer. Stay tuned.

This is an article on the English blog Slotforum that I sent to Tony P. about printer bodies  and chassis...   Just click on the address to go to Slotforum.

From: Robert Emott Jr (birtyres@msn.com) Sent: Tue 6/18/13 8:43 AM To: tony przybylowicz (tonyptrinity@gmail.com); Robert Emott Jr (birtyres@msn.com)

Take a quick look...   On the second page is a picture of a full sheet of the printout showing two bodies and the parts to assemble two chassis.   Apparently the printout parts can be materials ranging from plastic to aluminum...   Very interesting...

You may have to copy and paste the slotforum address to your address box at the top left the page on your computer to make it work...   I often check the slotforum blog just to see what is going on in Engand...   The area for posts on digital racing is neat, with some views of multi car racing.   As many as 16 cars racing on a four lane Carrera track...

Awesome looking chassis and body! Great design and shows the promise of 3D printing . Often thought about having a go for some other slot car parts/cars. Just gotta learn the 3d software.

Thanks for the links :)

3D printed chassis with the front axle holder attached with 1/16 rod. As you can see it will allow for a slot.it pod where I will use a Yellow (20K) Flat-6 motor. This is a flattened version of a FK-180 long can motor. It will use 1.0 mm offset gears. The body is an MMK Resin 1955 Ferrari 735S. I will mostly use slot.it running gear with DART wheels and tires.

I am hoping for a upgraded version of the chassis with a central pivot that will allow for actual torsion bars in the future. But for now here it is. The side pans can be tried and give a platform for the required lead weights.
