You're welcome, George.  My pleasure.

Dennis, I'm working out a chassis design for the first race right now.

Steve, Rick et al,

Quick question on the rules here (Bordo finally over, so I can start on the R&C car!): in these rules the rear tire width is given as 1/2" max., which is what I remembered and seems logical for the time. But I seem to remember seeing a 5/8* reference somewhere, and when I look at the GT cars in the 5th R&C race (R&C, Jan 67), some of the rear tires certainly look wider than 1/2" - did the rules change at all, or am I seeing an optical illusion?

I've got a pair of VC greys, which are marked 5/8 x 1", although measured they are actually closer to 1/2', plus a pair of Martex black foam tires, also marked 5/8" and that's the actual width...

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don,

As far as we know it was 1/2" max width so that's what we're going with. That's what is written in the rules.

Thanks for confirmation Rick. Just for info, here are the chassis pix from the GT cars in the 5th race. Amazing how much heavier they got in just a few months!

Yup, lightweight cars in the early races evolving into much heavier cars toward the end and into the 1967 Car Model series and beyond.

I remember Mike Morrissey summing up the 1966 series by saying the motors got more powerful and the tires got more traction. Then the chassis could get heavier to help cornering without much of a penalty in straight line speed.

The 5th Rod and Custom race of 1966 was held at Don Peters' American Hobbies raceway in Hawthorne, California. Don had a "red" American King track with bumps in the straightaway.

In order to reduce the chance of launching in the straight, many of the coupes in that race were much heavier than in previous races. The motor winds used for that race were not much different than the previous race at Checkered Flag raceway in Torrance. Don's track had better power than Checkered Flag and therefore the cars were about .5 seconds faster per lap.

Don Vanderwall's Raceway in Downey acquired the Checkered Flag track and held the 4th Car Model race in 1967 on this track. The lap times for the Car Model race were about a second faster per lap as the motors had hotter winds (27 wire vs. 28 or 29 wire) and the track power was much better than previous races.

I know out east as we added weight we could widen the tires and get more bite.

Is Champion 501 or 507 a legal motor?

Is a 507R arm legal?

Good question Bob.

I would have said no offhand, because there's no mention of the Arco 33 magnets in the race reports, and even if the West Coast guys didn't run Champion, they would have latched onto the magnets as soon as they were available, I would have thought.

However, looking at the literature, I see a first Champion ad for the 507 in the October 66 issue of Car Model, and there's a report in the January 67 issue of Model Car & Racing from Bob Rule (The Southern Scene) about a Champion factory team running a 507 at the Family Hobby Center in HIgh Point, NC (yep, the High Point 600) at the end of the summer - 51-1/2 hours! Two 707s and two 507s in the top four.

So it does seem to have been available in the R&C timeframe.

What do you think Steve & Rick?

Hi Guys,

Actually there is mention of ARCO magnets towards the end of the series in the race reports.

The first ad I've found for the Champion 507 end bell drive motor with ARCO 33 magnets is page 77 in the Nov. 1966 Car Model Magazine. This also puts it as available to R&C builders so I would think you can go for it Bob.

Cool I have those 'bits' in stock :good:

Rick, Are the pictures of the 507R (EBD) in the Nov. issue a chrome blind bushing can?

Don, is the Oct. showing 507R or 507 (can drive w/ floating bushing) in blue or chrome?

Thanks for you help on this.

I printed off the tech sheet and the rules page ..... BTW.. Rick, what is the date again that you are to have the cars in hand? :scratch_one-s_head:

Hi Bob,

Here's the link with the dates and shipping info:

Hi guys,

Yep Rick, I saw afterward that it was mentioned in the last report in the February 67 issue of R&C, where Gene Husting says that the Arcos are now becoming available. There was also the Tom Malone article on The Compleat Mabuchi in that issue, and he also gives the choice of magnets as French or Arco (with the Arcos still the cut-down 36D models).

The tech charts didn't have the magnets listed yet, so can't be sure who was using Arcos...

Don

Concur.  Here are the two ads mentioned by Don and Rick:

CHGA6610CM75.jpg

The October ad (above) infers that the 507 has Arco magnets, but doesn't explicitly say that.  If it is true that the 507 had Arcos, then they were indeed available in September, 1966 (when the October issue went on sale).

The November ad:

CHGA6611CM77.jpg

Here it is stated that the 507 includes Arcos.  Note that the part number (CP-507) is the same as the part number shown in the October ad.  Seems conclusive to me.  Arcos for 16Ds were available in September, 1966, well within the time frame for R&C races 5 and 6.

ONLY A FEW WEEKS LEFT!

Okie Dokie, here's what we're going to do.

The cars will be mailed to me.

I will take a series of neato pictures of all the cars (which will be posted on Slotblog).

Then the cars get packed in their very own new “Indestructo Box” with bubble wrap insulation:

ProxyEvent1.jpg

Each box will be labeled like so:

ProxyEvent2.jpg

I will personally transport all cars down to Eddie’s track for the Proxy event.

After the Proxy event I will personally transport all the cars back and return ship them to you via USPS Priority Mail.

The car, packed in its padded “Indestructo Box” will be packed into another new shipping box lined with Styrofoam peanuts like so (more peanuts piled on top too):

ProxyEvent.jpg

Here’s what you need to do:

1. PM me with your name and address as shown below. This will become the shipping label for your return box:

Rick Racer
123 Pit Lane
Speedtown, CA 90210

2. In the PM tell me if you want insurance and if so, how much.

3. I’ll PM you back with my Mailing Address and PayPal account info for you to pay for your return postage. You can just stuff cash in you box if you prefer.

4. Make sure you download, fill out AND PACK WITH YOUR CAR the Tech Sheet below describing all your cars features:

attachicon.gifR&C Tech Sheet-2.pdf

5. All cars are to be USPS mailed to me WITH A TRACKING NUMBER. No UPS or FedEx.

6. After you ship your car, PM me again with your tracking number. With the tracking number I will follow your shipment and make sure I’m home to receive it.

Here are the costs for return shipping to you via USPS Priority Mail and insurance if desired:

One car is $8.95
Two cars are $12.35

Insurance is optional and costs extra:

$50 is free with Priority Mail
$100 costs $2.60
$200 costs $3.30
$300 costs $5.50

Onward.........back to 1966! :victory:

Arcos in 507's, HPower rewinds ..The field is certainly shaping up to be fierce! :

Great stuff, I'm pretty stoked. :sun_bespectacled:

Thanks for posting the Champion info. :good:

Funny .. the cut down 36 mags don't look like the ones in the magazine ad. They look more like Fred Flintstone 'resized' them ... :laugh2:

I'm thinking you should be charging an entry fee to offset the track fee and all the 'special handling' of these little cars.

At the risk of being too 'pushy'

I would $pring for some 'contestant' box plaques from Ralph Thorne (RTR) if you come up with some cool artwork or a copied period logo image.

The trademark if any for this series probably has expired .. :wink3:

Good deal Pablo and Paul. :good:

The "Event" will be like the timed qualifying done before all the R&C races. Rodney will also comment on all the cars driving characteristics (he's really good at that). We'll have 3 classes, Sports, GT and GP.

There will be lots of pictures and a R&C style Tech Chart with all the cars specs and times posted on Slotblog :dance3:

The cars will be run one at a time by the same driver, in the same lane and timed like they did for qualifying at the R&C races. All I know about the voltage is that it's a battery powered track????

Getting ready to mail the car Rick.
What is the drop dead arrival date again please?
You see..... during testing I destroyed a model car knock off wheel spinner. Since late April I've been searching for a replacement. (arrrrrrrrrggggg)

Hi Jairus,

Drop Dead Date:

7/17/14

If your car arrives after that it will be in safe hands, just not my hands and won't make the event.

Jairus, what do you need? Can I help?
