Flashback....

OK .. so...it's 1966.

Team Cresskill was made up of Richey Genes and a little Gator named Bob.  Home track Closter NJ.

We didn't make in to the slot magazines but our noses were in them when we should have been on our paper routes.

Our FAST cars were built around mostly Dynamic, a Champion chassis or two and a Cuc thrown in. Richey had a Weller Gun neither of us could solder worth a damn, the face made when scorching an endbell was all the proof we needed.

That ruby red hot and smoking Cox controller made it all seem so real while never letting go no matter how hot my hand got.

We were in awe watching the Pros compete.

An 'old guy' came up to me once and said "hey kid, it's bad to keep your cars in a metal fish and tackle box, it kills the magnets."

So .. this is the thread where I will start with my questions and build up.

  • Are production or kit chassis cars allowed in this event?
  • Would this motor be legal? The endbell was first introduced in 1966.

Love the Team bio Bob especially the glowing cox controller part!! :D

Reading all the race reports Bob it appears that most if not all were brass scratch built jobs with I think a dynamic one mentioned .

Probably best to wait for Rick or Steve for the ok or confirmation :good:

as for the motor I don't think the magnets would be allowed. They were all using standard Russkit 23 & hemi mags, till Russkit got a hold of secret new mags (broken 36D arcos) ...Rick has made R&C spec motors using mabuchi arms with the green comms & mags from '68 16D's..

Again this is just what I've read from Rick and Steve and the race reports, wait for their yay or nay :)

Thanks guys, my life has been great !

BTW ..

I see a Dynamic chassis car in the 66 R&C pictures and Rick built one so I'm guessing that is legal.

I don't see any Mabuchi motors with spring post protectors  .. does anyone else?

Hi Bob,

Welcome aboard! :)

The motors were pretty basic for the 1966 R&C series.  No post protectors, no Champion endbells, no shunt wires and no Mura Semi Can magnet shims....as best as we can tell. The first "broken ARCO" and Tradeship magnets were used and so were the Tradeship comms.

This makes a good representation of the period Mabuchi rewound motor. It's, I believe, 65 turns of 30 wire and when paired it's magnets runs pretty cool and fast:

Thanks Rick,

I haven't been able to put any time to building the Team Cresskill entry but I have put some serious thought in to it.

With that said here is what has been on my mind.

Reflecting on life I've decided I don't want to win, we (I) couldn't have won, we (I) couldn't build from brass or wire, we (I) couldn't rewind a motor that would run right or last more than 5 laps when it would run at all ... in 1966.

We rode our Stingray bikes to the track, I'm putting the Genie back in the old metal "Team Cresskill" fish and tackle box. My entry will be 'scratchbuilt' from screw together Dynamic parts with a stock motor.

That is MY 1966!

After some more humbling major surgery coming up and a bit of healing time I expect and intend to have our (my) entry ready to mail....

...  but please don't hold me to it.

x-IV  Do we have to call the nurses to warn them you're coming?  When I was in the hospital last fall, many nurses looked like they belonged in high school. Not a gray hair in the bunch. :)

Thanks guys !

The cuts are healing, the scars are forming.

My mom has been taking me around in the car to 'do the papers' because the doctor said I still can't ride my bike.

I'm required to put the newspapers under the front door mat and the fact it hasn't rained much is good. I was a couple of weeks behind on 'collections' but getting caught up and the tips have been pretty good because the papers have been dry when all the dads got home from work.

Now ... I'm going to spend all that tip money at the counter and started yesterday to get all the parts together for the big race coming up.

Team Cresskill is going to try to run with the pros we see in the magazines. I must say that it has been hard to fall asleep at night think about all this and getting up for school is a real 'drag'. I even missed an easy grounder at Little League practice because I was daydreaming about slot cars again. Please don't tell my dad I went to practice.

It IS ... 1966 :good:

I hate going to 'The Mall' :beee: ...... so instead I went mad gift shopping and spent all my paper route money.

I'll just return what 'doesn't fit', now where did I put that dog gone receipt :dash2:

So many parts ... so little time. :to_become_senile:

hmm ... using my best screwdriver should I build a winning Ford or looser of a Chevy?     :sarcastic_hand:

I've been working with diligence on the 'Zero Solder' Dynamic SW screw together car. :wacko2:

Frustration on trying to get it to fit in the 3" 'tech tool'. :dash2:

Might have to go 'back to the drawing board'. ^_^

GOT IT !

I found a threaded gear that can solve the width problem. :dirol:

Did not want to go with a wobbly :ireful3:  threaded axle set-up ... but ... no other choice.

Could you of used the obscure R&C rule of the tires sticking out the rear by 1/16? To make the car work Bob?

The body is exactly 3" wide so the rears will be just up to the fender flares at the max spec width of 3 inches.

It is 1966, I am in 1966.

I was dedicating this favorite 'old' 1964 song as I looked at the pile of parts for this car. :wacko2:  :dance3:  :laugh2:

Very nice Bob :good: Like  the "front" body mount. Certainly got a nice "weighty" look to it with the Midwest brass pan.
