Hi Clay!

If you're talking about the atlas motor for the Cooper/BRM etc cars, yes they are nice! But! without proper care, they will smoke worse than ME at a bar!

But it is nice!  Stock dual ball bearings!

I've got one in an atlas 1/32 chassis with an MRRC Mercedes W194/6(?) beautifully detailed car, Tom Andersen wheels and wire wheel inserts.  One of my favorites!

Hi Clay...

The 406 is the BB long stack gold wire 6v used in the 1/24 cars ... the 206 is the short stack green wire BB that was the hot replacement in the 1/32 cars.

They are great little motors. The 408 and the 208 a bushing motors both gold wire 8v IIRC.

----- I was typing and walked away as Mikey posted ... he is right these motors are not happy on commercial power.

Here are pics of the car/motor:

HPIM0956.JPG

HPIM0957.JPG

We had a guy in our C.A.R.S. vintage club, Armand Campanile, that took one of the Atlas BRM cars that I got off eBay back 7 years ago when Tiger Tom Pittstone was selling them for $29.99 (traded to Armand for...something, can't remember...Tiger Tom [or rather someone else, I think I read he passed recently] still sells em but they are $99.99 now) ...anyway Armand did some detailing and made the car look like a 1/24 scale Great White Shark.  13 seconds on red lightening, he got to the back straight and went full throttle a a PUME of acrid smoke came from beneath the fins.  Holy Smokes!  Literally!

I miss Armand and his wacky creations...he made one car from an empty box of cigarettes!

That's a 206 with a neo magnet.

That arm looks ok ... the epoxy turns milk white when overheated on commercial track power ....

Mikey, did you see my 'Atlas Scratch' car that I posted..? No smoke but close. :heat:

Mikey, Google seems to indicate that "Tiger Tom" Pistone is still living at age 81. I found no indication that he had passed.

Bill,

Great news!  When I had purchased the Cooper/BRM from eBay from him he had sent some memorabilia signed photos of himself with various race cars and nice notes thanking me for the purchases...I have one right here on my dresser mirror...taking a pic....

Anyway he sent me tons of stuff with the purchase, I was psyched.

Doug, if you want I'll hunt in my stash for a 406.  Let me know.

Hi,

The bigger AT406 only came in a ball bearing version and was standard equipment on the Atlas Lola T70 and Ferrari (that's it in the middle of course, alongside an AMT and Cox Lola T70).

LolaT70HBchassis_zps76e363e6.jpg

Very mediocre speed from what I've seen, and power to weight ratio isn't great; haven't seen any rewound...

The little AT206 and AT208s are great motors, and we have run them on pretty hot power too. A few have gone up in smoke, and that was the word on the BB versions, but I've never had that problem. They're one of the faster open frame motors you can use for 1/32 cars, and even for some lighter/smaller 1/24 cars. They fit just about everything too, which is a real advantage for F1 and sports cars in 1/32. Just seem to have a lot more "punch" than their larger brother.

I stand corrected .. there is no motor called the AT-408.

I don't think the AT-206 was ever in an RTR car. They were fitted with the AT-208 also called the 'Little Bomb'.

Thanks Mikey ... a fun 'scratch' build ... a slow car.

No, not at the time Bob, but Auto World later sold a bunch of their own kits with the Atlas motor and chassis, whatever parts they could dig up and a clear plastic body, for about $5  - so there are actually a lot of these floating around, or bits of them... They even hooked up these motors with the Winnwagen plastic anglewinder chassis - they had a LOT of Atlas parts left, which later went to Tiger Tom and Chrissie...

Don

I bought one of those (stupid) kits ... what a klugey POS.

Never put it together as a finished product .. the motor was held in by the axle through the plastic rear uprights and a piece of double sided foam tape under the magnet.

That is when I decided to build the Atlas Scratch car and the motor (still) in it was from that (stupid) kit. I still have the 'hacked up' plastic anglewinder.

BTW: what motor is supposed to go in those?

Bob,

The original brass Winnwagen chassis was supposed to take any kind of can motor - even a 36D! Not sure for the plastic, but think it was just a regular 16D, last-generation Mabuchi or similar. We had a discussion somewhere on here about the Winnwagens...

Tiger Tom was a tough person per pound. He just didn't weigh much! :)

IIRC he was the southeast distributor for Firestone racing tires. I met him at Atlanta race track probably in 1975. A nice person with a good wit and humor.

One of the few NASCAR drivers that was accepted from outside south east. He had a few wins and the respect of some crusty owners and crew chiefs in his day.

Mikey, sure. Sign me up! Thanks.

Don, you always impress me with stuff in your collection. Very nice!

Well, I have a few repop Lola shells laying around. Might as well cover up a 406 with one of them. It doesn't need to go very fast sitting on a shelf.

With those scale tires, the Atlas looks like there could be about an inch and a half clearance between the bottom of the motor and the track surface. No low c of g there.

Hey Clay,

Have you compared the Atlas with the other big open-frame inline motors? Wondering how they stack up... I think a good Pittman DC70-6V would be my choice... or maybe even a 196-65X (hi Rick)...

Thanks, Mikey. It's not like I needed it yesterday. I appreciate your efforts. :good:

Thanks to a tip from Mr. Thigpen a couple years back, I picked up some NOS Classic bevel gear sets off ebay. They'll be perfect for this motor.

  1. Make sure the axle and motor shaft are in direct alignment.
  2. Use a fine sharpie marker on the tooth faces of both gears.
  3. Set the pinion so it is in full tooth contact with the crown.
  4. Turn over slow on your power supply for about 30 seconds.
  5. Inspect gear set with eye loop to see how the marker is worn off.
  6. Make a note or, take a picture or since your young 'just remember' ... lol
  7. Clean of sharpie with brakecleaner or lighter fluid and a brush.
  8. Put it all together just the way you had it before.
  9. Put some 'fine' polishing compound or tooth paste with baking soda on the crown gear face.
  10. Run it on 'slow' (very slow) on the power supply for about 10-20 minutes.
  11. Take it all apart, clean it all off and go back to step #2 .... :laugh2:

Thank you :)  Very good instructions.  I will be using bevel gears in a 196A car that is in its infancy.

Doug - No luck on the 406.  :(
