First of all it was a fun time at Eddie’s running all your cool cars. Much thanks to everyone that participated! :victory:

The R&C cars have always been a passion of mine. I love the blend of scale car realism tweaked a bit for PRO racer speed.

A Tech Chart is being prepared by Steve Okeefe for each race report similar to what was done in the original R&C Magazine race reports. This will list all the specs and components used in each car. When it's ready Steve will insert the Tech Chart into this post and make a post to notify everyone.

So here we go with the GT Class Races. All the on track pictures were taken by Rodney Chew. Thanks Rodney!

QUALIFYING TIME EVENT

Fastest time was Steve Okeefe's Porsche at a 8.67 second lap time:

6SteveO2.jpg

Rodney's comments, "Crazy horsepower! It will tilt at the limit but it's predictable"

Predictable enough so he could drive it to fastest time pushed along by gobs of power.

6SteveO1.jpg

Second place went to Jairus Watson and his "Green's the new black" Ferrari with a 9.00 time:

2jairus-1.jpg

Rodney's comments: "Great power and brakes. Easy to drive fast but the car feels a little tight"

There's more in store for this car at the end of this post :)

2jairus-2.jpg

Next up on the podium with a 3rd fastest time was Paul English of Team Pittman with a 9.39 lap time:

7SlotStox533.jpg

Rodney's comments: "Nice driving car but it starts to hop at the limit and that's holding it back from faster times"

7SlotStox534.jpg

4th fastest time was Pablo and his Chaparral 2D with a 9.66 time:

3pablo-4.jpg

Rodney's comments: "Great motor! So much power it's tail happy at the limit"

3pablo-1.jpg

5th fastest was Gator Bob and his wild Cheetah with a time of 9.78:

8GatorBob1.jpg

Rodney's comments: "A little low on brakes but really fun to drive. The tail comes out at the limit just like a real Cheetah"

Bob's got the body anchored down pretty solid so I didn't want to try and take the body off for pictures. Here is his picture of the chassis and there's more in store for this beast too :D

CONCOURS EVENT

With such great looking cars the concours judging is always tough but track owner Eddie did a good job. Thanks Eddie! Here are the first, second and third place finishers with Paul out in front followed by Steve and Pablo:

Event3.jpg

Congratulations to all the entrants. Your hard work and talent really shine through.

But wait, there's more :)

PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD

We also have the "PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD". This is an award given by Rodney for the car in class that, as he puts it, "I like the look."

Rodney raced cars in the R&C era.........heck, he's raced cars in every era! He started in the "dawn of time" and never stopped racing slot cars. So when he talks about "the look" it means that the car looks like it could have come right out of the 1966 races.

The first "PROMOTER'S CHOICE AWARD" goes to Jairus. Nicely done Jairus:

AwardsCars5.jpg

Lastly I was struck by Gator Bob's entry so I get to give an award too! I was trying to think of what to call his car....."baddest", "meanest", "most aggressive looking" but I just couldn't come up with the right title.

Then my wife walks by the table with the dozens of different cars laid out and points to Bob's car and says, "WOW! What's that?" I blurted out without thinking, "that's the most BADA$$ car of the event" and she replied, "It sure is!"

So congratulations Gator Bob!

AwardsCars2.jpg

So again, thanks to everyone! Next up will be the GP class and we have twice the entries to post..........

With the hopping  ,  could it possibly be the loose rear axle tubing? Ball bearings or bushings may cure it?

Thanks Rick for an amazing report & pictures !!! :good:

& Thanks Pablo!!!!

Also.... what did Steve have hiding in that motor??? :laugh2:

Paul,

Motor?  What motor?  :D   You see nothing...   Nothing at all... :tease:

Actually, if you look at the body you will see that I pulled out the wimpy flat six cylinder Porsche mill and installed a 327 Chevy V-8 that I borrowed from Jim Hall.  See the eight intake stacks under the glass?  :good:

308?  That's no 308 body dude.  :laugh2:

Good race report Rick and nice to see that all the cars were so close together time wise. A few tenths of a second is really nothing when running laps unless it's a contest like this.

.................A few tenths of a second is really nothing..........

Wait until you see the What If Class results. We had 5 cars within a few hundredths of a second and a tie for 4th place. :shok:

If you look at the original race reports the fastest qualifiers often did not do well in the race. I'll point this out in the GP results. One of my cars qualified quite well but the motor lost its brakes after the first few laps.  :wacko2:  No way it would have done well in a race. :o

This event is really about building the R&C cars and gathering them together in a Celebration and not so much as a competitive event. But slot racers being slot racers, we thought ranking the cars in order of their best "qualifying time", as was done in the original R&C events, would be fun. :dance3:

Onward :D

... not to mention that there were no B, C, D, etc. finals in the R&C races. You were either one of the top 12 qualifiers or you didn't get to race any more! Top 4 qualified directly for the final, and the next 8 ran a semi to determine the top 4 finishers, who went into the final.

I can't imagine the pressure that would put on these guys, as good as they were

Don,

The R&C races were a first iteration slot-racing series, flawed in the sense that it was a lot like full-size racing.  For example: At Indy, if you don't "make the field", you don't get to race at all.  I suspect most other major auto racing events are pretty much the same.

And... 1966 was a different cultural era, not nearly so "politically-correct".

Nevertheless, the R&C races produced some incredibly talented and skilled drivers, and stoked the flames of organized series slot-car racing like nothing that came before had done.

It wasn't a critique Steve, just an observation...

Also, although it was tough, it meant that the guys could go home for dinner (or to cry in their beer...), since the final wouldn't have to wait until 4 in the morning...

Hi Don,

No rebuke intended -   :hi:  :victory:

Ahhh yes, the "death march"...  been there, done that (as a spectator of course!)

One of the few benefits (if you want to call it that) of conducting races that way is that by 4am, the "atmosphere" in the raceway is more like a private club than a public circus.  Only the best are left, and although nearly everyone is wiped, they're still very serious about what they're doing.

In our little R&C Revival venture, there is no staying up till 4am (except maybe to build slot cars because the deadline is looming)   :shok:   :laugh2:

Congrats on the (very) fast time Steve. :victory:

Rick, Thanks for all the work setting this gig up and the BadA$$ award too, Good thing your wife has a the eye for picking great cars out of a crowd ...LOL

:dash2:  I'm a bit disappointed in the overall speed.....that Cheetah is built heavy duty to survive an enduro.

A contributing factor to the feeling of no brakes might be the fact that the car is not a drop arm and the guide flag was probably not buried in the slot. Just 'rolled in' to the corners with full weight on the fronts.

Looking forward to trying it out when it gets back ..... I will change out the 'drum brakes' and put the ARCO magnets back in ... thought they might be to strong for the 'green' comm rewind and build too much heat and melt the posts. :heat:

Hi Bob,

The guide was deep enough so the front wheels were actually a bit off the track. We checked this as you requested. Maybe it's just a "sidewinder thing"?  As we'll see, my full sidewinder was no match for the other cars in the What If class.

Must be, bumped timing, stock magnets, heavy car = no brakes.

It was ...1966. :to_become_senile:
