Thanks to the V-Town crew for a great event.

Bob, I think the voltage was 16.0-16.2v?? Or that is what I think I heard?? I know it is a battery/cap combo.

Hi Bob,

Here's the word from Rodney,

"Some said 18 volts. I had Eddie check the voltage. Eddie measured 16.1 volts with his voltmeter."

The Multi-gear rail is so cool.

I love it too, Paul. I asked Rodney about it. He said it is a time capsule lifted right from "the day" and raced without much prep and it still ran strong.

I like the idea of moving the motor forward a bit to help keep the nose down. I know Weldun gears and ball bearings can really be set up smooth as silk. My six-wheel racer's set up is super smooth:

Thanks guys. :) I was going to do wheels and tires next but I just couldn't resist setting up the rear end. It's a ball bearing salesman's dream come true:

6-wheeler048.jpg

It's an all vintage Weldun affair with a 48 pitch crown and 64 pitch spurs and idler gears. The 64P mesh smooth as silk:

6-wheeler050.jpg

Hope DVan can get some more info on it for us both! :victory:

OK, let's see if I can get this to work.

Multi-Gear Dragster:

mg9.jpg
Right hand side

mg7.jpg
Left hand side

mg1.jpg
Left side brass screws hold gear cover, gears look to be pinion 38 - large gear 60-62

mg2.jpg
Underside of gear area, smaller around 24 teeth, larger one 34-36 to rear axle.

mg3.jpg
Right hand side, underside close-up look.

mg5.jpg
Top view of motor and gears area. All axles seem to have ball bearings.

mg8.jpg
Top view, driver, motor, gears, and rear axle.

This dragster seems to be a factory-made chassis. John MacCall thinks it is. we're trying to determine if this chassis is either homemade or a factory chassis, as well as what kind of motor the dragster has? Any help with this information would be greatly appreciated.

Gearing is and these are approximations of the gears we can see, the chassis is epoxied together so taking this dragster apart for further review at this time is impossible. It runs in ther 1.4-1.5 sec range.

Gears are
Pinion 38 - 60 or 62 - 24 - 34 or 36 rear axle. What would be the final gear ratio for this dragster?

This all the information I have on this particular dragster, if you would like share some information, either post it on here, or email me at bracket500@live.com.

Thanks,

I made a number of Magwinders back in the late '60s. The last one was an idler gear one like this.

I can tell you for certain that this is not a factory-made chassis. No one manufactured even a true Magwinder let alone an idler gear car.

Very interesting car.

Uncle Fred, for what reason would you have an idler gear? What sort of gear ratio did these cars have?

Also what size tires would these run? Any clue on what motor this is?

  Thanks

Gears are:

Pinion 38 - 60 or 62 - 24 - 34 or 36 rear axle. What would be the final gear ratio for this dragster?

DVan,

When you have an idler gear set-up, regardless of the number of idlers, the gear ratio is determined solely by the first and last gears.

The idlers have no effect on the ultimate ratio - only the first and last gears.

Idler gear tatio

If the car has a 38 tooth pinion and a 34 tooth gear on the rear axle, the ratio is 0.895:1.

If the axle gear is 36 tooth, the ratio is 0.947:1.

The idler gear would position the motor further forward allowing you to run with less added weight on the front end. Should be a slightly lighter car as a result.

Motor looks like a Ram 850. Some very nice machine work! Did you change the gears? They look new and may be a result of whatever would fit.

Idler gears were usaually 1:1 otherwise.

Taking another look at the pinion, it appears to be a 28 tooth gear. Matched with a 60 tooth would be 2.14 ratio. But the idler gears DO change the final ratio! If the idler gears are 24 and 36 that would be 1.5 ratio = 3.21 which would be about right for a car like this.

The gear ratio is very restricted unless there would be some sort of adjustment built in to the chassis.

Tires seem right.

Greg, thanks for the information and link.

Fred, again thank you for your information, it's not my dragster, and like I posted under the picture that it's all epoxied in. "The chassis is epoxied together so taking this dragster apart for further review at this time is impossible."

As to adjustment, I couldn't see any whatsoever, Each axle rides with its own bearings and there is no room to adjust anything.

Thanks for all your replies. I will pass them to the proud owner of this dragster.

We just need tire size now..

But the idler gears DO change the final ratio!

Fred,

I hate to be difficult, but idler gear do not affect the final gear ratio.

Please take a look at the link I provided and Google the issue for further info.

The gear ratio is very restricted unless there would be some sort of adjustment built in to the chassis.

A change in gearing on a fixed system can be made although in somewhat large increments. The gear spacing, therefore the adjustment, stays the same if you change the pinion and spur by the same amount. For example, going one tooth more on the pinion and one tooth less on the spur.
