Im an old fan of Weldun gears, Ive scowered Ebay and there seems to be an abundant source of Spur drive axle gears but seems to be a lacking in motor gears, especially in .125 dia shaft size.

Also am I correct in some understanding of motor shaft dia sizes ?

.078 = 16D size motors

.090 = 36D size ? :wacko2:

.093 = ?? some kemotron size types ? :shok:

.125 (1/8") for big padlock motors

Looking for motor spur gears for Kemtrons and Pittman/Ram size motors.

I see I can find good selections in 48 pitch but  Ijust like the Weldun 64 pitch gears. :dash2:

Having just participated in my 1st vintage proxy race , See http://slotblog.net/...xy/#entry561909

Got my slotcar fever going to build up some more for future races ! :laugh2:

Paul,

Have your local raceway contact REH in Cincinnati. They might still have some.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the pinion that drives the axle spur gear, i.e., the motor gear.

EJ's Hobbies has quite a few. They aren't shown online, you'll have to call. Sonic pinions work well with them. You'll have to ream out the bores for larger than 16D shafts.

Thanks guys ! I struggled with the "correct" nomenclature for the motor (pinion) gear versus axle gear. I know "crown " was used for inline and "pinion" for the motor. Hey ! Im old drawing on 60s memories !!  Im seeking 20-30t weldun gears for .125" dia motor shafts and also some for the Kemtron .093"dia (?) .

Ok, I had a revelation ! :dash2:

 (old memories awakened) the gear on the motor is always the "pinion" and depending in sidewinder or inline set up the larger gear is either "Spur" or "crown"

Weldun gears are 64 pitch and few large pinions are made today.  In the 48 pitch sizes and 1/8" bore, a few smaller spurs are useable as pinions.  I would check with an RC car shop for some options as well. Many of the RC motors are 1/8" shaft.

Ive seen the gears for RC car motors and yes they are .125" dia and would work well for old padlock style motors but they run 48p which is workable Im just a 64p kinda guy.

Idler gears are described by their name, and are neither pinions nor ring ("spur") gears.  They're an intermediate gear in a drivetrain that "connects" a drive gear to a driven gear.  Pinions are usually (I'm not sure if this is always the case) the smallest or smaller gear as in "rack and pinion", but don't have to be the driving gear.  In my youth I operated and maintained various printing presses and one flat bed had a long rack at it's side that was driven by and also drove some pinions.

John, I was just going by what my dad told me when I was a kid. He worked about 35 years for the Tool Steel Gear and Pinion Company.

So if a pinion is not always the driver then what is the difference between a gear and a pinion? It wouldn't be the size or the number of teeth because all that dictates is the gear ratio. Just asking.

So, is Don alive? The last time I saw him was back in the 80s when I was looking for Mabuchi Pull-outs…. He had a bunch of 16-Ds still in the styrofoam cases but no 36-Ds….

1/12 scale R/C racing used 64 pitch in the days of nicad batteries. Trinity and Kimbrough made the best then.

Foamy, I did a search last nite just on that subject and found a very big source of pinion gears in a variety of teeth and sizes, sent an email asking if all those gears have a .125" dia hole for motor shafts. No answer yet ( but I think they do ?)
