The CanAm race at PCH was a thriller.  Exchanges from 1st and 2nd went throughout the last half of the race.

From my end, this was to be a special race to honor the TSR motor.  What was to be a lightweight King track chassis ended up “too heavy”. The complete car coming in a little under 102, it  was a tank, but found out it was perf for a fresh cleaned PaperClip track.  I had this left over handout motor sitting so lonely in my case so, maybe this would be a chance for a moment of glory.  The motor performed very well one Thursday night, teaching the local Hawks.  So I decided to bring it out against the Hawks one last time at PCH.  While the car posted the slowest  lap, it held its own through out the race.  But in the last heat, Steve Walker pulled away to win with just a little under a lap lead.  Congrats Mr. Steve !

I want to also express appreciation to Philippe de Lespinay for his contribution to SoCal Retro racing, having the TSR to serve these several years to the present.  It was a great run.

Chassis construction:  Single .078 rails, shaker pans, full time front spin axle

Weight:  101.8 g

Gears: 9/28  Koford crown  +++

Body:   TS  Ti 22 long

Jason, you know that would be conventional thinking, BUT as it turned out no one was significantly running me down the straight expect for Ben Sr and John Parker's H7. That dead man at the end of the straight comes on VERY fast and I needed the brakes or I'd be braking halfway into the bank.  The dead man is a tippy toe turn for even that 102 gr car.  The heavy cars could jam around much faster as well as the finger.  Steve Walker was running a 108 gr DragonSlayer  9/29.   About everyone was having problems  in the deadman.  The King Cobra is just very different than the BP King.

You are right about the Deadman drove that track for 5 yrs the extra tooth does not change the brakes only top end and brake 12ins sooner for the deadman and roll on and problem will be gone

JK INDY CAR

PCH owner Scott Salsberg came away with an astounding 282 lap win and fast lap  with one of Mark’s loaner cars!  Sort of humbling to get beat by your own car.  Great run,  congrats Scott!

GTS

A squeaker race with Mark squeezing through by two laps with 299 laps in  some very tough competition.  Earl’s car being the overall best performer.  A lot of high down force bodies out this time around.

Great run everyone!

Retro CanAm

Another very tight race between John Parker and Mark Wampler with John overtaking in the last few seconds of the 8th heat @ 286 laps.   There was still some confusion  that the Hawk 7 is a little too much motor for Retro CanAm racing.  So everyone be advised that the Retro Hawk motors are the approved power plant  for this class.

It was a great run and lots of fun.  Let’s get together next time!

Saturday’s race at PCH was fun and competitive although there were a handful of racers.  The coupe race was furious as the Hawk 7 powered Turbo Flex cars ran their course.  The Retro CanAm proved to be the most exciting.  Mark had some problems at the start of the race which opened the gate for John to take the lead.   From there John ran a near perfect race for the win.  Earl, having the super fast Kamo Speed car was running down Mark, but fell short a 1/3 lap behind for 2nd.  Congrats John for a great run!  I hope that next month, we’ll see more interest in racing at PCH.

Don,

The cars and track, are they pretty much like BPR's flat track Can-Am chassis' and set-up? Or?

That track looks neat.

Another fun day of competition at PCH.   Cool to see  Don who  had come to visit with us.  Nice pics and a special thanks for helping with turn marshalling !

The track conditions called out for super soft, grippy tires.

CanAm started out the gate with Earl’s ballistic Kamo Speed car doing a 4.55 fast time on Orange.  John, Earl and Mark battled it out the entire race with Steve close by.  Purple and Black lane was to be reckoned with coming out of the doughnut causing numerous deslots.  A major crash in the straight bent Mark’s front axle which caused the front end to drag slightly but manageable .  Nice tight racing.  Good run Earl, John and Steve.  Interesting note that White, Orange and Blue lanes had 2 racers each posting their fast laps.

The JK Indy cars are always a blast to drive.  With Hawk 7 power, these little cars scoot along real fine.  Steve came out leading early in the race but ran into problems on Black.  John and Earl running real close,  but with a few lucky laps  John came out  at the top by one lap over Earl and Steve coming in 3rd .  Mark, while running only a Retro Hawk had the motor burn up sending a cloud of that sweet burnt wire smell throughout the track and coming to a lonely stop. (waaaa!)

Thanks to our traffic director Bob Maxwell, our host Scott Salzberg and Don Campell once again for handling extra marshalling duty and putting in a good plug for PCH racing!

Congrats to podium racers and everyone who came out for some fun.  See you next month.

Tom,

I raced my BPR king Can-Am car (the only Can-Am I have), you'd be better off with a car setup for the BPR flat track than the King if you have the choice when running at Scott's. The track has a very tricky deadman, almost off-camber due to the rise as you come into it. Overall really fun, but bring soft tires... or just your tire turing gear since Scott seems to have every tire under the sun in stock!

I bought one of the RTR JK Indy cars and raced it right out of the box... handled better than my Can-Am!

Max, yeah, that was my thinking. I'd probably get the weight to around 108-110. Gear it 8/28 for a R/H? I'm going to try for the April race, but with the Zimmerman race at BPR coming up, will have to see. Thanks.

Tom,
The track was not prepped this time. Traction was limited.
I've raced at a previous race when track was prepped and traction was good.
A car with more weight would be better for the deadman, but the rest of the track is FAST.
Earl was fastest, and he ran a Kamo chassis.
For $85, the box stock JK open wheel cars are a blast to race.

Thanks Mike, that will give me some ideas. May have to look at those JK open wheel jobs. Those F-1's give me the willy's tho. But, maybe for the flat track, just maybe.

Mark, got your PM, thanks for the info.
