I'm getting one of these as a handout for tonight's enduro - 16ea. 5 minute heats and somewhere around 1100 laps...
change the brushes? change the springs? cut the trailing edge?

Lots of info on these motors, Charlie. Just read the threads.

I didn't read all the post's in here so this question might already have been asked and answered.
What does the FK stand for in this motor? 4002FK
It's obviously not an FK motor like a Falcon 7 or Retro Hawk.
They started a new flexi race at the Tri State Raceway just north of Hamilton, Ohio and any FK motor is legal, even the 4002FK.

When the Falcon 7 was unavailable, the IRRA® opened up submissions for new FK motors.I didn't read all the post's in here so this question might already have been asked and answered.

From what I've seen it is faster than a Retro Hawk in a flexi car.

No it's not an FK motor based on the endbell and brush design. That said if the armature is essentially the same and the magnets Gauss the same and if the pricing is competitive there is a strong argument for making a motor legal that let's you see the brush wear and even see if their is reasonable spring tension. One of the main things I've noticed from testing and watching on track performance is that these motors once broken in seem to run pretty equally. They can be fussy to break in. Any organization is entitled to make up it's own rules and rules can and usually are arbitrary, so use em or not. So far we like them in scenic North Carolina.

I ran a new FK this past Saturday on a King. It was in a LMP car with a JK C-21 chassis. This was also the first time I had built a car in maybe 15 years as well. I was rusty, it was rusty, My old external resistor controller was acting up, ect, ect. Finally worked some bugs out of the car, borrowed a controller, and was able to turn some clean, if not fast laps. I was geared 9/31 with .825" tires. The motor ran a little hotter than what I would have expected. And it did fail to restart twice, in the same corner both times. First time, I wasn't paying closed attention and held the trigger down for a few seconds and the motor AND controller (Parma Turbo) started to smoke. It also had what used to be the "death" smell. So I figured I might as well run it as I expected it to go up in smoke within a couple of laps. It never did. Probably put another 50-60 laps on it and it seemed fine, except for failing to restart one more time. This is the same experience a buddy of mine had on his first FK but on his 60' 4 lane that we recently built. I think I'm going to trim the brushes as described and try to do a proper break-in and see what happens. I really like the little motor. I hope the restarting issues can be resolved.

I ran a new FK two laps in an Retro F1 and it slowed. I ran the motor on a power supply and sparks shot out of the bushing, clearly a short. Could it be the end bell or just a bad arm?
