"Original Shinoda", a forgotten Dart - Can it be saved?

We will try and restore the original Dart, it is in poor condition and deformed.
This is an unusual body, I have never seen a Dart with a extended head rest behind the cockpit area.
So lets take a look and see what we have.
Packing out the body with clay
A lot of clay packing. See how the clay can relieve the body twist? Does not look that bad now.
The clay will allow the twisted body to be pushed back into its original shape. It is a slow process to bring the body back.
Missing body areas will be infilled with clay and trimmed off. As the clay hardens it will be able to be finished off smooth for restoration.
Trimming the clay to restore missing areas of the body.
Stay tuned, progress to continue.
Enjoy the how-to.

That headrest looks open behind the driver. Is it possible that the Dart started as a closed cockpit that joined up to the "headrest" and that the owner trimmed the closed cockpit to proved the lower screen? This is an unusual body, I have never seen a Dart with a extended head rest behind the cockpit area.

Here is a copy of my original Shinoda Dart, it has no headrest. I have never seen one with a headrest, but who knows.
That's why I think this original with the headrest is worth the effort to restore.
Thanks,
Gene
This is a copy of my original Dart, including the chassis I built for Don Siegel, and is powered by a original Dyna-Rewind.
Original with a headrest.

What we need now is a bottom template with center lines so the X-Y can be controlled, now to the next step.
After the clay is paced solid, we now can take a heavy steel weight to push against the body to try to true up everything we can.
Lets place the clay-packed body on the work platform, now we will line it up and check the body outline.
Now we will trim the missing side take area to match up with the outline on the work template.
You may have noticed the wind screen area is now a closed cockpit, so the body can be open or closed; this is a builders choice.
A look-see down the center of the body; it looks pretty good.
Here is where we are, the clay brushed in, now we will let this dry up so we can dust off the brush marks.
More to come...

Making a box to hold the silicone mold material.
Box is completed, mix the silicone materials.
Silicone placed,3 hours to cure.
Separating the body plug from the silicone mold.
Bottom removed,lets pop it out.
Original body plug out of mold.
High temp resin in place, 2 minute cure time.
Resin plug pop out of silicone mold,it is still very hot.
Side by side view.
Now the next step is to dress up the new plug in prep for vacuuming.
More to come, stay tuned.

You made quick work of that Gene, any chance we can see a comparison shot of this plug next to your original plug, are they the same lenght ect?
nice job! thanks for sharing
Here is your request;
It appears the length is about the same, but if you look close there are some differences at the wind screen area and the vents.
near the rear one is wider and nose shape of the nose has a slight contour difference.
If you need additional photos let me know.

I agree with NostalgicThanks Gene, I thought it looked a little slimmer, to bad there's not a Shinoda catalogue kicking around
Lots of variations, and no names to go with them
Yes- a Shinoda catolog with names would be great. I see from the pic -the one on the left is a ------ design? I've been doing a mold of that design, but not sure if it's another view of one already done looks like a spin-off of the Strike?
O2R
PS Gene did another great job on that body maybe he'll do the pictured one

George
The one on the LEFT as I remember is THE "SMALL BUS"
The one on the MIDDLE as I remember is THE "GP"
The one on the RIGHT as I remember is THE "BULLET" { Like the Large Dart,but smaller and different than the Large Dart}
Now I may be wrong but this is my best shot at the names.
These are currently being recreated. In both scales.

I figure the rubber is ReproRubber, but what is the mold epoxie you use? A couple minutes to kick sounds pretty good. How does it hold up to running a large number of pulls(100ish at a time)?

Hello Foamy
The rubber is Silicone Dow Corning good to 600 degress.
The Black [sometimes I use a cream color] plug material "Resin"is good and very stable to 250, yes it can stand a large number of pulls, without distortion or break down. Cost is around $120.00 for 2 gallons.

After the final casting a lot of hand work was needed to smooth out areas to try and make this body as close as possible to the origianl shape.
The photos show the original body[gold and green],silicone mold[blue],vacuum plug[black] and this first test shot body [painted green].
I do not know if this was a original Shinoda design or a personal modification to suit ones liking. Either way it is still a very interesting body and the modifications blind well to provide a close canopy with a headrest effect.
The body name for this will be the Large Dart [Sky Rocket],unless someone can provide the original name if any.
The original will soon be retured to the original owner with some fresh bodies to mount up and zing around the track once more keeping the Thiniges alive.
