Here's Howies PM to me about his test session on Chicagoland's King track:
Hi Rick,
Just got back from the track. Put the chap body on it and the blue tires. Car was loose and would not go around the track with track power set at 9 volts. Motor is wicked fast even at 9. I gave it lots of choke and it was going around the track OK but not wanting to go around the doughnut. At this point it was running 6.0's.
Car all of a sudden slowed dramatically but still running. Something was rattling, the can busing had come off. I soldered it back on and continued, motor is fine.
I put on the black tires and the car was much better but bad in doughnut. I put tape across the bottom of chassis and then around to severely limit movement and that helped a lot. It was moving good then and I could run it no choke on 9v to 5.5's.
We then turned voltage up to 12, still low but the motor was ballistic. I put choke back in and got it down to 5.46. This is really quick for one of these.
I then put on the Lola body and we shot a video of me running it for a couple of laps and took these pics at the track.
Everyone loved the car and thought it was fantastic!

Here's the 49 year old Team Cobra can we used that the bearing came loose on. I thought about resolding it but I didn't want to mess with its originality. I'm glad Howie is the one who got to fix it:
Looking at this close up picture I think I see a crack in the joint I didn't notice in real life.
Here's Howie's YouTube video of putting his baby through it's paces on Chicagoland's Blue King track:
WOW! Howie's got it really moving!
Am I a lucky guy or what? Thank you Howie for letting me work with you on this project. And thank you Noose and PdL for all your help and Scott Bader for inducting this car into LASCM.
AND, the really cool thing is there is another of Howie's great cars in the works with the additional help of one of the best builders, my friend, Steve Okeefe. Stay tuned................

I love how rather than just taking a few parade laps and shelving it, Howie's changing tires, putting tape across the bottom to limit movement.... overall just trying to make it run faster! Once a racer, always a racer! Fantastic project. Looking forward to the next one.

When Howie showed up at the track, on Saturday, I had the power at 9.0V from a previous rental.
When he started doing laps, I went to tell him about the low power level, but seeing how fast the car was in the bank, I checked my rental supply first to see if I had changed it, and forgot, which I hadn't.
He spent quite a bit of time getting the car right, and eventually it really came around.
He was pushing it hard, and took advantage of my soft walls at least a few times.
For the heck of it , I just tried my modern Retro F1 car on 9V, and the best it could was 5.65.
On 9V, the vintage rewind was way faster, hence the better 5.55 lap time with the 67 Arco car.

Thanks for some of the back story Mike. It's interesting how taking movement out of the chassis made it faster on today's tracks with today's tires. And, THANK YOU FOR THOSE SOFT WALLS!!!!!!!!
Pablo, Howie decided to go with a genuine Cobra armature although it was a year or so newer than is absolutely "Korrect" for the car. It's a Cobra double wind and it's my guess from inspecting it, that it was produced for Cobra by Mura.

THANK YOU FOR THOSE SOFT WALLS!!!!!!!!
One of slot's racing great mysteries;
Manufacturers, over the years, making equipment more durable/reliable, but 50+ years of almost 100% hard walls on commercial slot tracks.

Below, Howie comments on getting a vintage style to handle with modern tires on today's tracks:
Car was unreal fast with no choke. makes a great sound and looks like it is flying. Congratulations on a great job and mission accomplished. I had a blast running it.
It was really challenging to get it up to speed though. Taking Most of the movement out is the way to go on these tracks. That is not to say No movement , I think that in micro amounts it is essential to isolate things.
Future projects will be great. H
Thanks Howie
