Tony,

I remember seeing the glue strips on the Hillclimb at B.I.R. in Union, a painted blue strip of about 10'' or so across all eight lanes. Also remember seeing Bob Emott covered with grinding dust from cutting steel chassis parts...

Bobs track was where we first tested the glue zones. It worked and full glue racing was over on the east coast for USRA. racing.

Your glue man was almost as important as your chassis. He controlled how fast you got through the corners and how much brakes you had.

He could also take care of the mess left by the previous racer on that lane. Lots of devious guys out there.

You needed a whole pit crew to race in the full glue era. 1 guy to glue, 1-2 guys o clean the straights with lighter fluid to remove the glue. A runner to grab your car after each heat, run it over to the person changing the motor while fixing the body damage. And yourself to change the controller.

Back then we just ran the lanes down the bank so you were next to the same 2 people the whole race. If they were glue hogs your race was miserable.....the Camen crew were the masters of glue.

"The Art of Glue", enough so my car goes through it and yours is bogged when you follow me because you just can't wipe it all up and start over.  :D

The lane rotation we use now is one of the most important things that happened to competitive slot racing.

Jim,

We talked about this before.

How come it's called the European rotation instead of the Honeycutt rotation?

And FWIW, before it was used by the Pro's, at least in the (Midwest USRA Series), Mark Mattei came up with it  for us to use in a Womp-Womp series, in about late 81,early 82.

Between my 2 Nats, (1974 & 1975) after an irritating Texas Series race, worked it out one afternoon at the Raceway. Foisted it onto the Texas racers and then used it at the '75 Nats, Nobody argued about it at all.

It became "The European Rotation" because someone thought it came from Europe.

I know what I came up with and when. There wasn't much crossover between us and the Europeans at the time so they probably came up with it by themselves...it wasn't rocket science.

Never said you didn't come up with it first.

I'm just surprised if it was used at the 75' Nats, why it didn't take the world by storm/was adopted right away.

I mean, who wanted to stuck next to some jag who wouldn't let you by, or kept coming off in the Deadman. LOL

Things didn't get around as fast during the Dark Ages. :laugh2: Remember, the reason why I had 2 Nats in a row was because there were no other Raceways that could handle it or that wanted it.

Tony,

The Pro's must of been stoked when things went limited glue.

More $$$ to spend on paisley shirts.

How many bottles of glue would you use in a full glue race?

I remember sending off to Ja-Lea, for one bottle of Dart, like it was a big deal.  LOL

Good to see you were at least pulling your load.

2 bottles of stickit would get you through semi and main in most cases.

Back before Stick-it, when guys were gluing from Deadman, 8 ft. up towards the Bank, for brakes.

I thought Stick-it was more of a limited glue invention.

Stickit was what we used. When it came out it was thicker and lasted longer than the champion MCD we were using. We were gluing both inside and outside in the turns. With stickit we glued only on the inside of the turn right on the lane stripe. On a king at least a section and a half to 2 sections for the deadman brakes.

We ran a race with standard rotation once at SAL recently. IT SUCKED!

Standard rotation did have an advantage in that you could at times get between your team mates so passing and glue were not a problem. You also could start on red and run straight down the bank so as your motor slowed you were on the lower lanes. Lol.

Throw back Tuesday, direct from Sweden built by me back in 70s for Berndt Petersson. I can’t believe the condition it is in.
