Mark and I discussed this about five years ago when I moved from my first location. IIRC, it was a short conversation. LOL.
I think he cited Dean Milano's semi-short lived toy museum in Elmhurst.
The economics just aren't there. How many people are willing to pay $$$ to look at old slot cars and models? 50 a month, maybe? What's the most you could charge, $10-$12?
Probably the only way it would work is if you had the items labeled and behind a closed shutter, and it was coin-operated. You would of course pay to open the shutter and add quarters to keep it open, or to flip the car over and see what's underneath the body, or see what's in the box.
Sounds like a patent worthy concept/invention. I just have to come up with a catchy name for "it".

Just a quick and tardy addition to this thread: when I was in Chicago for Thanksgiving, Mark kindly invited me and my wife to visit him and see his collection, and he was a kind and gracious host. He gave my wife and her camera the run of the place, while Mark and I talked slots and many other things.
I hit the ground here running, and haven't had much chance to add pictures or tell Mark again how much I appreciated getting to meet him and see the collection, so am doing it now; and will go through the photos and add some more once I sort them out to avoid duplicates. (and eliminate the fuzzy ones - seems I dropped a lamp on my wife's camera one night and the focus didn't always work - sorry, honey!).
Not to mention that Mark collects a lot more than slot cars, as you've probably understood from the pictures. We got a quick look at his antique bike collection before leaving, and that's just as impressive!

The collection is one of the hobby's hidden treasures. As is Mark himself.
Talked to him just yesterday.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

It would be off topic to even mention the two Vincents and other things in the garage....

I will add that if you ever get an invite from Mark to visit, do not turn it down!
Same goes for Bernard in Houston, and Scott in LA, and I'm lucky to have seen them! Each has a "feel." but even more enjoyable is listening to each tell the stories of how/when/where they got their favorite things.
