"This is real racing," said Brian Casterline as the Scalextric Vipers ripped around the 118' Goodspeed course Thursday evening.
The line is that slot car racing is the most affordable form of motor sports where everything is full size or bigger, except the cars. Both the Viper class and the Contemporary F1 class provided plenty of close action and some remarkable on track incidents, especially with the open wheel cars. One F1 car struck the pedestrian bridge on the main straight about 4 inches up.
Racers attending were: Bill Blett, Brian Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, Doug Farlow, John Hansen, Leroy Heikes, Harlan Jones, Tim Keck, John Lacko, Keith Rosine, Tom Ryfiak, Craig Salisbury and Kevin Yonker. Craig and Tom won the most improved awards for the evenings events. Heats were three minutes long.
No new track records were set. (Loaner) signifies a borrowed car.

All the racers at Goodspeed have their own favorite race classes that are spread over the 36 classes we run. Ask any of the same racers about their least favorite classes, and almost everyone mentions the same three or four. Thursday evening we ran two of the least liked; C2 Early Sports & GT and C14 1970's NASCAR. Cars in these classes tend to be narrow and high with a less than racy center of gravity and an entertaining polar moment. Weight and size are additional factors in the C14 1970's NASCAR class that work against fast laps. Loose screws shut down lane 4 during the second heat, but the heat was restarted. Racers competing were: Bill Blett, Brian Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, Doug Farlow, Harlan Jones, John Lacko, Keith Rosine, Craig Salisbury and Kevin Yonker. Kevin Yonker won the most improved racer with his strong finishes in both classes. Heats were 3-1/2 minutes long. No new lap records were set.

Goodspeed and the West Michigan Scale Slot Car Racing Group hosted a pair of hard hitting, two fisted competitive show downs Saturday; the Super Tires 100 for Grand National Monogram cars sponsored by Super Tires and a Brights in the Night LMP1 race under the lights. The races attracted four racers from Chicago as well as a strong contingent of the regulars. Racers competing included; M. G. Brown, Jack Dastoli, John Hansen, Harlan Jones, John Lacko, Denny Moscatelli, Kurt Nank, Tom Ryfiak, Craig Salisbury, Ken Swanson, Mark Welch and Kevin Yonkers.
The Super Tires 100 consisted of 5 minute heats to insure the top cars completed 100 laps. The race was limited to only the Monogram NASCARS in the class. Nick of Super Tires provided their 1700 tires for every entrant and the podium finishers won their choice of six pair of Super Tires.
The LMP1 race was an enduro with 12 minute heats that tested both man and machine. The only eligible cars were Scalextric LMP1 cars with both head and tail lights. Back up cars were pressed into action by John L. and Ken due to mechanical issues during the extended LMP1 race.
Due to a cold track, it is alleged, no new track records were set.

The winning margin in the C23 Modern GT2 race
Racing is always close at Goodspeed, but the results of the first race of the Fall Series for Modern GT2 cars was even closer than we have ever seen before. Four cars finished with the same number of laps to tie for the win, all were the same car and the winner pulled out the victory by a couple of inches. Five drivers were faster in lane two than the old lap record. Judging by the results, fall series racers with any other car than the Fly Marcos have their work cut out for them. Racers competing were; Bill Blett, Phil Carpenter, Brian Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, Doug Farlow, John Hansen, Harlan Jones, John Lacko and Jerry Wofford. Heats were 3-1/2 minutes long. New class records are indicated with an *.

17 November 2016 Racing Report
The West Michigan Scale Slot Car Racing Group GT2 Fall Race Series wrapped up proving the overwhelming potential of the Fly Marcos 600 LM. That car was the only car on the podium in each of the four races. There was some variety in the finishing order for the C5 Classic B Prototype race, but not much.
As usual there were plenty of micro aggressions on track during both races. Lots of close racing all evening. Racers participating included; Bill Blett, Brian Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, Doug Farlow, John Hansen, Harlan Jones, John Lacko, Keith Rosine, Craig Salisbury, Jerry Wofford and Kevin Yonkers. New lap records marked with an * were set in both classes.

GOODSPEED IS CLOSING
Over the last 12 years, many 1:32 racers have enjoyed competing regularly at Goodspeed in downtown Kalamazoo and contributed to the ongoing success of the four lane Scalextric track. Great friendships have been made along with lots of great memories.
The building at 244 E. Michigan has now been sold and the deal will close in a week or so. Unfortunately, the new owner's plans will not allow Goodspeed to remain in the basement after the middle of June. So plans have been made to shut it down with two big events.
Thursday 5/11 This was going to be the Touring Car Enduro, but now it is going to be two of our most popular classes; C12 Trans Am and C22 Modern GT1. Both C12 and C22 has 200 gram magnet limits.
C12 Trans Am (1967-1971) 200 grams
Carrera; Cuda
Pioneer; Camaro, Mustang
Scalextric; Camaro, Cougar, Challenger, Mustang, Javelin
C22 Modern GT1 200 grams
Auto Art: Lamborghini Diablo GT3
Carrera: Corvette C6
Fly; Porsche 911 EVO, Porsche 911 GT198 (not the “Racing” version), Viper, Saleen SR7R, Ferrari F40, Dodge Viper
Ninco Mosler MT900R, EVO Genie,
Policar; Ferarri F40 LM
Scalextric; Ford GT, Jaguar XKRS, Aston Martin DBR9, Maserati MC12, Corvette C5R & C6R
SCX; Aston Martin DBR9
The track will open at 6 PM, tech at 7 PM and racing immediately after.
Saturday May 20 Goodbye to Goodspeed Special Event. This will be a general hot lapping, B.S. session so bring any and all your cars to finish it off. We will shoot a group photo between 1 & 2 PM. Track will open at 9 AM until the last person goes home.
The dissembling of Goodspeed will start on Sunday May 21 at 1 PM. Any and all help will be appreciated.
Note: It is likely that this track will be relocated at some time- there is no further information on where and when available at this time.

3/18/2018 “Slot Cars and the Kalamazoo Connection" lecture was presented by racing photographer and historian, John Lacko.
This is a video taken after the lecture at the BRAND NEW Scalextric Sport 1/32 Red Barns Raceway (private track) that has been installed at the Gilmore Car Museum, Hickory Corners, MI. There is some commentary about 1/32 scale racing and how the track operates that should be of interest to anyone.
See if you can spot the old guy wearing the 2016 ISRA Worlds T-Shirt in the video. It was a pleasure to represent 1/24 Commercial slot car racing at the exhibit by bringing a couple dozen cars and controllers for the people in attendance to examine.

My wife and I drove up to attend the seminar and spend some time at the museum. We liked the presentation and I got to talk a bit with John. It took a while to get to see the track, but it was worth it. Nice track and venue. I didn't have any idea so many people would be there!

July 25, 2018 Red Barns Raceway Race Report
25 July 2018 Carrera's 1957 Chevrolet Bel Aire made its competition debut in the C2 class. Since the real car saw lots of racing action back in the day and also since we do not have a 50's NASCAR class, the car was added to the C2 Sports and GT class. Tom Ryfiak was brave enough to borrow it for the race. Tom was able to maintain a decent pace with the decidedly overweight and tall 1:32 car with a delicate touch and letting the other cars run their own pace. Racers included: Bill Blett, Brian Casterline, Cierra Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, Doug Farlow, John Lacko, Randy Merrill, Tom Ryfiak, Craig Salisbury and Jerry Wofford. Heats were 3.5 minute long. Lap records indicated with *. Loaner car identified with owner initials.

Red Barns Race Report for November 4, 2018
Once more we were reminded why we don't run some of the fragile F1 classes more than once a year, because after a race, it takes that long to rebuild them. Destruction ran through the C15 Formula One 1970-1978 race at RBR. Left front wheels were lost on several Scalextric McLaren M23s. John Lacko's M23 suffered the most after losing the overly delicate left front wheel assembly one more time. The car went on to shed the rear wing and engine cover during the race. The car finished the race with gear problems as well. John has complained to Scalextric about the feeble front ends on several 1970's F1 cars, but the problem has been denied by customer service. John's car problems started when the motor in his Pioneer Smokey Yunick #13 Camaro blew during tech inspection. Most improved race performance awards went to Craig Salisbury for his blistering start in the C15 race and Keith Rosine for his competitive Pioneer 1967 Mustang fastback in C12 Trans Am. Racers included Bill Blett, Brain Casterline, Cierra Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, John Lacko, Keith Rosine, Craig Salisbury and Phil Weinreich.

25 November 2018 Annual Thanksgiving Enduro
Endurance racing drivers describe getting into a "zone" during a 12 or 24 hour race. ln the middle of the night going 175 mph at LeMans when it is just them and the car, everything else seems to fade away.
Everything else faded away said several of the 1:32 scale racers Sunday afternoon at the Red Barns Raceway at the Gilmore Car Museum as the annual C20 LMP 1 enduro stretched on. Usually during an endurance race, drivers get a chance to relax and just turn lap after lap without much close competition, but that was not the case today.
Even with 15 minute heats, the lap counts were fairly close. Several heats had side by side duels for many laps. Since a endurance race is a test of both man and machine, there were complaints about raw trigger fingers and stiff legs as well as some car carnage.
Racers included; Brian Casterline, Cierra Casterline, Ryan Casterline, Lonny Convis, Jack Dastoli, John Hansen, John Lacko, Keith Rosine, Craig Salisbury, Kevin Yonkers and Phil Weinreich. Heats were 15 minutes long.
