Sorry my Labooooratory is classified! But I have a few images that will give you a glimpse of it.
It is similar to JJ's though with a few highly scientific equipment additions that I developed (that's the secret part)
JJ, I'm sure you have a similar feeling as I do when you finish creating something
LMAO!!

Yard sales is another source of buying a desk, shelving, etc to make a slot car work area. Ikea is another great source and if you live near or reasonable distance Ikea has a section for display and damaged stuff for sale, or asked relatives or friends if they stuff to give away to make up the slot car work area.
I use a computer desk and table that my wife did not want and a 6 bin storage unit and a 4 draw plastic dresser to keep my slot car stuff in, plus a dvd/ cd player and radio to listen to music to calm the nerves.

Betting JJ knows exactly where everything is in the rats nest. I'm on two 2'x6' plywood sheets screwed & glued together. The legs are from a Home Depot workbench that I got for 2 cents. I splurged & bought the last two. They were about to be shipped back to the mfg. My shelf has a fluorescent light (presently not working) on the bottom of the shelf.

JJ-
After seeing your work space I may be tempted to post a photo or two of mine.
My space is definitely LESS COMPLICATED!

I use a computer desk with the top cabinets across from the computer desk where the PC resides. An old stereo cabinet next to it so the dyno can share the computer. Down stairs is my paint area, solder stations and lathes, mills and drill presses sorts of tools. A separate area downstairs shelves model kit overflow from the room upstairs. It's all knee deep and Jersey John friendly.

I wanted to point out my favorite feature of my workbench setup, Lista multi-drawer cabinets. Their drawers glide open on ball bearings with only finger pressure. They open fully so all the drawer is accessible. I can keep only the tools I'm using on the bench top and the others are within easy reach when needed:
I can also have small tools like drills, reamers and taps in lift out red plastic trays:
I worked for facility for 25 years that used Lista cabinets exclusively and I promised myself that I would get them when I retired. When I found out their cost I almost changed my mind. They are CRAZY expensive! Maybe another company makes a reasonably priced alternative to the Lista....somebody sure should!
Anyway, having all my hand tools off the bench top and easily accessible in drawers is REALLY nice and something to consider.

Ever move a Lista cabinet or similar cabinet? There's serious steel in them.
Even at equipment auctions those cabinets go for serious money. You might check Kennedy for cabinets for a start.

Yes..........it almost killed me!
They were delivered on a pallet. When I asked the truck driver if he would help me get them up the 3 steps into the house he told me, "no". When I offered to pay him the told me, "NO!" The truck driver did not get a tip.
I ended up removing all the drawers from the cabinets, laying cardboard on the stairs and sliding the cabinets up into the house by myself.

My "Work" Area ...
Dennis, you have it too soft! And you have too many books in your library to distract you.
