I'm looking for something lighter then my Koford power supply to take to the track for running the Hudy tire truer. I've seen some small units that are 12V/5A non adjustable. It was mentioned that Triggerman had one?? There are some small units out there similar to laptop power supplies that are 5V/5A (60 watts) for very little money that would need a connector change. Has anyone ever tired one of these? Again, this is just for powering up the Hudy.

Thanks Tim, but that's a bit larger then what I'm looking for. I typed the wrong voltage (and fixed it) on my original message, I was meaning 5 volts/5A range to just run the hudy.
Has anyone used something like the link I've attached? Again, it's only to run the hudy to cut some tires to size at the track.

You are not going to find anything smaller at less than three times that price.

check out your electronic surplus store. that's where i got my 5v/5a power supply for about 25 bucks. very small: 4" x 2-3/4" x 1-3/8" less the cord. it's like a black box, fully potted with screw-in terminals. i'll post a picture of it later.

Has anyone tried running a tire lathe on one of the supplies Russ found? I tried to run mine on a similar unit but it kept popping the breaker. If it works it is certainly an ideal supply for taking to the raceway. And cheap as chips.

here's a couple pictures of my traveling power supply. the circuit board on top is something i made up, called a pocket choke. it works, but it's only good for 4 amps. not enough amperage for slot racing (too bad), but it's great for breaking-in motors.

As Pat informed me, the amps are probably not enough on the unit I posted above as it's only 4 amps. I found a unit that looks the same as PC power supply that is 5V/8A. Should be here Tue., I'll let everyone know how it works out. It'll be interesting to see if the voltage will stay at 5V once a 5 or 6 amp load is put on it. I figure for $15 it's worth a shot. If not, I'll buy the unit you post the ebay link to above and give it a shot.

Anyone have one of the old ones Trigger Man used to sell that they would part with? They are 5V 9A and light. Frankie really worries how much his box weighs. Usually leaves stuff at home (even bought a smaller box) cuz he knows he can borrow one.

Third Eye is making a new power supply. It is 0-10 volts and up to 7 amps. It is available through your local track via Eagle Distributing.
It's a pretty basic power supply, but perfect for packing in your pit box for powering your comm lathe, tire truer and for breaking in most motors (Up through group 12). It's really small and light!
Here's a picture:
It's called the "Mighty Mite". I believe the MSRP is $200.

It's right about 1.75 lbs, or so. It's 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" X 7", that's including the knob and the power cord in the back.
More details coming soon, but Eagle should have them in stock for your local track to order.

5 mins on Amazon and bought this, this will be my new track box power supply for powering up my tire truer. This weighs less then one pound (14.5 oz), is 5" long, 2 1/2" wide, 1 1/2" thick. I cut off the connector, put on two clips to hook up the hudy. I cut down 5 sets of tires last night using this to power my hudy, no issues. Voltage 5.2 volts idle, drops to 4.8 volts when cutting the tires. Works perfect!
Total cost including shipping and the clips.. $16.00

How much are you taking off ? Do you keep a meter hooked up when cutting?

Works better then I thought it would, kinda cool really. Perfect for cutting down a few sets at the track. It don't have the bells and whistles of my Koford, but I don't need that at the track normally for just trimming tires down.
