Build A Pro Motor

The article is using an early C-can with the modified Mura B-can end bell with the small bearing. As we move into 1973 this was replaced by a dedicated C-can end bell with the big 6mm bearing.
Here's a picture of a later (1973 or so) end bell with the large bearing on the left and one of the last of the small bearing versions on the right. You can tell the small bearing job is a later version because it has the cutout under the brushes for cooling and the end bell clearance for the frame is molded in. The small bearing end bell used in the article had these features milled in. Also note the brass spacer the early version needed to center it in the can, an artifact left over from its lower profile B-can roots. Also note the changes in buss bars from a simple round rod to the "Solid State" style.
Here is a picture courtesy of the good Dokktor of a 1973 motor using the big bearing end bell:
Here's the link to the Dokk's Gilbert car restoration with more pictures of this motor and the entire car. Good reading!

Anyway, this article is cool to build a 1971 motor. Next I'll post the later Lee Gilbert motor building article from that classic Car Model Magazine series......

I made those little drawings for the article too, on a restaurant napkin if I recall. Ray Hoy took them and printed the suckers...
