I guess I didn't find it that long.... I *DID* read the "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" so this newspaper story wasn't *that* long... I could never "get into" Russian literature. It just wasn't my style. McMaster-Carr is more entertaining than many books however.....

Excuse the thread drift, but does McMaster-Carr still publish a catalog? My copy is dated 1993.
I am not a doctor, but I played one as a child with the girl next door.

These two are a disgrace to the entire community of Lawyers. As well as the human race.

I found the story an interesting and cautionary read.
It has a likable victim, heroes without overt flaws (the police and DA), and villains that can be despised (wealthy, petty, and manipulative). It could (and did) make for effective “reality” television. In the end villains are brought low, and while the victim is vindicated there is no monetary compensation.
You do need to look beyond the 30 second sound byes and click bait headlines. (it’s called attention span).
The cautionary tale is the naïve belief that “the truth will set me free”. This tale first turns on the investigating officer not taking the quick route of what is presented as evidence and reacting accordingly. It continues with a community which is willing to fund a police department with the time and manpower to devote to the investigation of this improbable series of events. Finally there is the District Attorney who is willing and able to devote the resources to this case which required a commitment of time and manpower with such a low chance of return.
Imagine the difference this story would have if the victim’s reaction to the request to search her car was “no I respectfully request you obtain a search warrant”. The police would have been forced to weigh the legitimacy of the phone call against physical evidence of a flawed time line and a sober accused, and the story would take a very different path.

This type of situation is not that uncommon. People file fraudulent law suits all the time. The saving grace
is the ability to counter sue under malicious litigation, and turn the tables on the jerk.
