Yes, it says '1967' on the cover, but it really is the 1968 catalog. The yellow-tinted 'new products, changes, and updated prices' pages bound in the center of this horizontal 9" x 6' booklet are dated 1968. Champion simply added those pages to the remaining 1967 catalogs to make the 1968 catalog. As far as I know, this is the last Champion catalog with a four-color cover. Later catalog were simply black printed on colored 8-1/2" x 11" paper.

You'll note the childish scrawl at the bottom of page 2. Yes, I sent away for this when I was fourteen years old – it's a 'one-owner' catalog!

I didn't really see the "blind" wheels listed. Were they produced after this?

Mike,

I don't know but page 26 does make reference to front and rear "blind" hubs giving a perfect 3" width with the special axles.

They were issued in two forms in 1969 and 1970. The first type had a plain, flat face, the later type had a step. The later type looks nicer.

Also please note:

- The '66 Ford Fairlane was never issued as a RTR, and never used the hand built, prototype chassis shown on the catalogue. It was only issued as a kit (really hard one to find today) with a clear Pactra Fairlane body and a 4.5" inline standard 1967 Champion Jail Door chassis with the parallel rails, for a Mabuchi FT26 motor. Packaged in one of those white and blue boxes just large enough for the body...
If you ever find one of these kits, it is a real treasure.

- The LASCM owns two of the three "Around the world in 80 hours" record cars. Who has the other one, which is the one on the catalogue? Large finders fee paid!  :)

- Champion has two previous catalogues before the one Cheater posted: the original 1966 issue is much less commonly found and is made of loose sheets bound by a plastic slide. The other is the 1967 issue, identical to the above but without the added yellow pages. After the 1968 version, Champion stuck to newsletters, price sheets, and sometimes, illustrated catalogue sheets in 8.5" X 11" format. With a bit of detective work, one can figure out what was made, and what was not.

After the 1967-68 "crash" of the hobby, Champion became the most prolific supplier of slot car parts, and unlike most of the previous products by the big companies, their stuff was actually pretty decent and worked well. It will still take two more years for the motors to become truly reliable when the comms were, at last, welded and wrapped in all production armatures from Champion, Mura, and Dyna-Rewind, the three main suppliers of high performance motors.

Excellent. I didn't really connect it because those wheels in the catalog appear to have mag inserts.

Thanks, Greg - your handwriting looks suspiciously legible for a 14 year old... must be that Southern upbringing!

I thought I had remembered the '68 catalog had a sticker on the front over the date, will have to check this evening at home.

And pretty sure those blind wheels came out before '69 - weren't they on the inline cars with Jail Door chassis?

The talented and helpful Slotblog member Niels Elmholt Christensen in Denmark has assembled my catalog scans into a single PDF for easier downloading and printing. Be aware that this is a large file, slightly over 13 MB, and will take a few moments to open.

Here's the link:

1967-68 Champion catalog

Thanks you, Niels!

Greg,

Just checked my copies at home; I have the '67 edition and a photocopy of the "68" edition, which shows a "Revised" sticker pasted over the 1967 on the cover of the catalog - yours seems to be the same edition, but without this sticker...

Don

PS: Philippe, just looked at the Champion ad in the January and April '68 issues of Model Car Racing (their last). For the front and rear wheel and axle sets it says: Micro-precision set screw wheels. Hubs have built-in stop and the axles are cut 2.6" long to give automatic 3" width...

Are these the "blind" wheels we're talking about? There's a photo, but it shows the Concours wheel inserts so can't see the wheel!

I can only surmise that the catalog I requested by mail from Champion might be from a different batch than catalogs that could have been sent in bulk to distributors and/or raceways. Stab in the dark...

Yes, but they were not available until early 1969, explaining why they could not show a picture...

Was there anything else shown in this catalog that never hit the market?

Bob Rule had a sample of the plastic carry case but believed that it had never entered the market.

And I've never seen a Champion controller. Did this product ever get sold?

Yes, I had one of the controllers. The last thumb controller I ever had. I think it was blue, and I put a strap on it that went over the back of my hand so I did not need to hold that hot thing too tight.

Greg, we have a half dozen of these controllers at the LASCM, in red, clear and blue translucent plastic. The handles and innards are from an older Strombecker controller of which molds were sold to Champion when Strombecker packed up their "commercial raceway" business at the end of 1967.

As far as the catalogs, the '68 generally has a "revised" sticker on its cover, but I have seen some without.

Here is a factory picture of the controller that was used in some adverts:

I had one.

I'm about 80% sure it was opaque blue. 100% sure it was blue.

It had heavy (14 AWG?) leads I'm 90% sure were exposed (non-sheathed).

Reworked the one I had to make it a short travel plunger. (Quicker?) the plunger only came about half way up and the resistor was shortened. It was rather touche as I recall but after you used it a while it worked fine.

I thought it worked pretty well, but I was only about 14, and at $6.98, it seemed like a bargain.

I remember using it until I bought a Parma Russkit.

Shortly after, I got the double micro conversion.

Getting the power micro installed was relatively simple, but to a 14-year old, trying to get the brake micro to go back to full off, reliably, was like splitting the atom. LOL.
